This Afternoon play has a very humorous and satirical aspect to it, but it also tells a story of academic arrogance and pride in the face of the supernatural - as such it manages to be about M.R. James, and a tale in the style of M.R. James, not to mention a story that comments upon academic study of James... That probably makes it sound rather dense and uninteresting but it's actually very light and entertaining with a nice little sting in the tail...

Excellent . Interest and intrigue from start to finish . One of the best things ive heard for yonks ~ and its got Catherine Sheppard in it ~ always a bonus .

Years ago I was in the habit of visiting the BBC Radio Theatre - I worked very nearby - and among the many good things about this was the chance to discover actors/comedians well before they came well-known. One particular series had David Mitchell, Olivia Coleman and Catherine Shepherd in the regular cast. I was on the front row, and have been a fan of Ms Shepherd ever since...

I first heard her in a radio drama series , "Ring around the bath" , in which she played a character called Xanthe who LOVED everything however mundane - though I couldn't swear to it - as I also thought it was written by Sue Limb , for years , which it wasn't... ~ I recognize her tone and intonation immediately I hear her lovely voice . Intelligence just shines out of her every performance eh .
This is great, every m.r. james fan should listen!
