I’ve seen this comment before about the Mini and it confuses me. My 2021 Cooper SE has the split Union Jack pattern within the tail lights - but they are not turn signals (otherwise, I can definitely see how they would point the opposite way to the turn). When the turn signals are activated there is a separate horizontal bar that bisects the light that flashes. Now mine is a Canadian spec car - perhaps these work differently than UK lights or other markets?

@@motorv8N Part of the problem is that the US market idiotically allows red taillights to be used as signals, unlike the rest of the world, so they probably just figured to save a few bucks and blink the whole wrong-pointing arrow.

@@kantoendrato - interesting - makes sense. The market differences don’t end there. For instance, my MINI also has fog lights in the lower rear bumper, complete with bulbs and wiring in place however, there is no switch to turn them on. Perhaps driving around with brake light-bright red in your bumper is not allowed in Canada although I see them activated on the highway on Audi and Mercs here. I’ve read you can get into the vehicle management, software with a BMW aftermarket app and activate those lights in a number of ways - as running lights, as brake lights, and if you add the switch to the dashboard blank, the aforementioned fog lights. Someone figured it must just be cheaper to install all the hardware on the line, then separate different country spec cars with just different software configurations. Don’t see how that’s true but there you go.

Sports cars have traditionally been lightweight for many reasons. Limited market and heavy batteries mean manufacturers haven’t risked making ev sports cars, 1850kgs isn’t lightweight, technology will improve but unless as a modern car with safety kit it’s near or under 1200kgs it’s missing the true nimbleness and lightweight sports car feel.

Nimbleness is more a function of power curves and moment of inertia; with the instant-on torque of an electric motor and the low center of gravity of the battery pack, an EV could be just as nimble any sports car of old. Steer-by-wire means you can dial in any sort of desired feedback to match expectations too.

There is a single characteristic shared by all true sports cars since about 2000, which they do not share with the majority of other cars. Lamborghini, Ferrari, most Königseggs, Porsche 911, Pagani, Audi S8, BMW M, Mazda MX5, new Tesla Roadster (not the original Roadster and not the Model S Plaid), and others: the brake calipers are as close as practicable to the car's centre of mass. That is, the front brake calipers are to the rear of the disk and the rear brake calipers are to the front of the disk. Very few true sports cars do not have this brake caliper mounting pattern. Of course there is a random smattering of ordinary cars which do this too (eg: Chrysler 300C, pre-2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee). Note that MG engineers decided to mount their brake calipers where they should be on a sports car. If they did this right, they probably did a few other things right too.

@@benrgrogan Plenty of information on the Internet about that, up to you to make your own judgement of such technology on road cars and why it hasn't been used on road cars... And it's been standard on airplanes for a very good reason: weight reduction and complexity of all the cabling and linkages that would have to be used on larger and larger airplanes. I'm unaware of any racing competition that uses steering-by-wire, which is the drive-by-wire component discussed here! There's nothing complex about having a steering shaft connecting the steering wheel to the steering arms and to the wheels, and steer-by-wire attempts to be a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, but that comes with its own issues and future problems...

A sports car is about an engaing driving experience, we actively do not want easy, light controls, and comfort at the expense of weight. Also everyone knows P Zeros are awful tyres, making out like they make it a sports car is really ridiculous. I do want to see actual electric sports cars, I don't want a 360 mile range 1850kg car, I want a 150 mile 1100kg car with a small rear motor, around 300bhp, and a manual gearbox woth actual ratios that allow high toque at low speeds and lower motor rpms and energy use at high speeds. People say EVs don't need gearboxes but that's just because they massively overcompensate with power, I'd much prefer a difficult, engaging experience, and that's what makes a sports car.

@@simonhurlimann908 yeah lol, ideally it would need to shrink by ~40 cm in length, ~30cm in width, and lose ~1/2 it weight / ~1 ton. You didn't ask for this added info but I'll say it anyway lol. If you assume they are getting a pack level power density of approx. 6kg/kwh then that means the pack weighs 384kg and 462 kg respectively for the 64kwh and 77kwh packs. meaning that without their battery packs the car would weigh 1.466T and 1.522T!!!!! (The difference between these two figures is due to the additional motor and beefier inverter in the more powerful model adding an additional 56kg to the car.) Basically what I'm trying to say with this is that, even without the battery matter, this car is just too damn heavy, at ~1.5T!!!!. If you took an nd mx5 and removed the entire powertrain it'd weigh about ~830kg, add in 120kg of motor, driveshafts and assorted electronics, and about 50kwh of batteries ~300kg (good for ~225 miles or about 160-180 when driven hard, perfect for a weekend warrior). And you'd have 1.25T, perfect little broad weapon. The first company to do this, and sell it for ~£35k is going to make and absolute killing. But until then were stuck with this lump of lard :(.

@@fenrir7525 i am also confused as to why this car is so heavy. And similarly as with this car, i still don't know why a renault zoe without its battery is heavier than a clio. waiting for the caterham project v, but at least at launch, it will almost definitely be out of my price range. fingers crossed for snatching one a few years down the line. :)

This car looks fantastic, it has presence. I am really happy they managed to pull this one off after 20 years of ownership of the MG brand. With the money they are asking, fair price by the way, I couldn't help but think how similar this move is to MG SV going against the Porsches of the time. The MG Cyberster really has taken the brand upmarket. It would be great if they could offer a less luxurious version with standard doors at a lower price point, for us mere mortals. The rear of the car looks great but I agree the taillights are a miss for me. If I could afford this, I would definitely buy it over a Porsche or any other established brand. It feels and looks fresh and exciting. So yeah, well done and please consider offering a cheaper version. Keep the mechanics and the electricals the same, ditch the screens and the scissor doors, cut down on the leather and price it at 30k. Would that be possible?

I wonder if Porsche fans are upset? I mean, it seems like it could be a nightmare for som models of Mazda, Honda, Hyundai and similar, it doesn't strike me as a cheaper alternative to a Porsche exactly. Favorite moment, "Brembo brakes all around, obviously very important", with a voice that implies he has no clue what that means. Second favorite, the tires it comes with presented an important reason to why it's supposedly possibly the greatest car ever made. Really funny episode, and the car might be well worth the money, for anyone looking for a better alternative to a Miata. Possibly the best Elliot episode, so far. I wouldn't be surprised if Robert could get that range out of it, without trying.

Strip out the gadgets fit conventional doors with handles and fit a hard top, the screens are great for cities but having now used camera mirrors while driving a 44t truck I don't like the fact a screen is always glowing especially on dark roads so I am glad to see this hasn't got camera mirrors at least. More basic like the Carice you recently featured would be better!
