The Metatron and Qur'an

/ bloggingtheology

I read from 'A History of the Jews of Arabia: From Ancient Times to Their Eclipse Under Islam' by Gordon Darnell Newby, pages 59-61. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1...
Qur'an 9:30: The Jews say: "Ezra ('Uzair) is Allah's son," and the Christians say: "The Messiah is the son of Allah." These are merely verbal assertions in imitation of the sayings of those unbelievers who preceded them. May Allah ruin them. How do they turn away from the Truth?
So when the Quran says, the Jews say Uzair is the son of God, it’s saying they worship Metatron. The Quran obviously does not approve. And some Jews didn’t either - Jews called the Karaites dismissed Rabbinical Judaism as polytheistic because of this Metatron idea.
So the Quran's polemic is directed against a medieval Jewish aberration rather than what you might find taught in an orthodox Jewish synagogue today. The Qur'an is NOT criticising Judaism as such but taking the Jewish Karaite view over against the Rabbinate view.

As a student of history I would like to add, that the Quran, one believes in it or not, is an accepted primary source of history, and specifically the history of religious beliefs in Arabia of 7th century. Thus, the fact that it criticizes a specific Jewish belief which is unknown, is an indication that such belief existed. So in reality it doesn't need to be confirmed by an academical research, in fact, it is a source for that academical research. It shows us the bias and dishonesty of everybody who try to criticize Quran in such term. Thank you Paul for your amazing work!

Our God, in His wisdom, does not divide himself, A God that divides himself does not retain the ability of Oneness and uniqueness, God, by His very nature is the most powerful, the Unique, so dividing Him into a Son, and a Holy Spirit would mean he is not All-powerful, dividing Him would cause more problems then it can solve. Thank you for your explanation! I would like to add a bit of Arabic morphology to consideration: Uzair having double diacritic ending can be taken as an Arabic word and not Arabized word (names of non Arabs are always Arabized in Arabic language and almost all of them lack double diacritic endings). As such, Arabic morphology can be applied to the word. The word then belongs to the group of words scholarly known as "fua'yl" which are mini-versions of other words of Arabic. For example, Umair is 'little amar', husayn is 'little hasan' and so on. These words are usually used to denote affection, as adults have affection for young on average. Perhaps then Uzair can mean 'little Azra' or 'little Ezra'. As to how I took the liberty of Ezra and not Ezar, I have never encountered the Arabic word 'Ezar' so far in Arabic, and as Jews by being Jews will revere a non Arab, I can then take liberty in taking the word that Uzair is a mini version of, to be an Arabized word, in which the best bet will be that the Arabized word was Azra which we better know as Ezra. If this is true, then I can assert that Uzair in the verse was used as a title just as in parallel Messiah is mentioned in the same verse which is too a title and not directly Jesus's name. Benefit of this assertion? Well, it can mean that when the verse addressed the Jews, Allah maintained affection for Ezra by calling him by the title of Uzair while denouncing those Jews for taking him too far as a son of God. In a sense, that is accepting that Allah did have affection for Ezra which we would understand as that of an adult for young but that affection did not imply that Allah had taken him as his young, as Allah is not bound by our limitation that such affections are only between a person and his young. This I think fits like a glove with the understanding you have presented in the video. And Allah knows best.

@Shah Faisal Islam Salaam ya akhi, jazakallah khair for your contribution. One of the claims in Jewish narrations about this entity we are trying to pin down is that he entered paradise and was renamed "the youth" because he was the most recent creation to enter the garden amongst other angels who preceded his arrival. When I started thinking of your examples of suwaighir affectionate nicknames/alqab like Hussain, I remembered this factoid about the meaning of Metatron being interpreted by some to mean "the youth". As time has passed, have you had any additional thoughts on this subject?

They were: Salaam ibn Mashkam, Nu‘maan ibn Awfa, Shaas ibn Qays, and Maalik ibn as-Sayf. So Allah, may He be exalted, revealed this verse. There are none among the Jews who say that now, as far as we know; rather it was a group among them who said that, and they became extinct. End quote from Ahkaam al-Qur’an (4/299)

If you look at all the names in the Quran of non Arabs, if it has 4 or more letters, it takes only one vowel at the end, not two. It is Uzairun not Uzairu . Also the belief needs to be mainstream, not from an unknown or forgotten heretical sect because it says: 'The jews say ....' not some of them , or a group of them. Please consider the opinion I shared not long ago.

advice when reading the Quran is make sure you understand the whoke context of the chapter. "This is˺ a discharge from all obligations,1 by Allah and His Messenger, to the polytheists you ˹believers˺ have entered into treaties with." (9:1) “You ˹polytheists˺ may travel freely through the land for four months, but know that you will have no escape from Allah, and that Allah will disgrace the disbelievers" (9:2) and also in (9:4) " As for the polytheists who have honoured every term of their treaty with you and have not supported an enemy against you, honour your treaty with them until the end of its term. Surely Allah loves those who are mindful ˹of Him˺." "And if anyone from the polytheists asks for your protection ˹O Prophet˺, grant it to them so they may hear the Word of Allah, then escort them to a place of safety, for they are a people who have no knowledge. How can such polytheists have a treaty with Allah and His Messenger, except those you have made a treaty with at the Sacred Mosque?1 So, as long as they are true to you, be true to them. Indeed Allah loves those who are mindful ˹of Him'" (9:6-7) So we can see that this chapter has context behind it, and is not just about mindless murder. If the polytheists who have BROKEN their treaty and were seaking to kill the prophet and his companions were given all these chances and mercy in all forms, then the context of the verses after is regarding war. Islamophobes love to hide these verses because they know their points would get debunked...their lies and propoganda are the SAME ones extremists without context. It would beg to question how on Earth Jews and Arabs lived together in muslim civilisations for the past 1400 years since the Quran was revealed had this verse been interpreted differently by any high emminent muslim scholar or infact any human being with a decent amount of intelligence. There would never have been treaties with non muslim states nor would there have been any christians or jews living in muslim countries, but there are. 9:29 has absolutely nothing wrong with it as remember, this Quran was REVEALED TO PROPHET MUHAMMAD, addressing him directly. The same prophet who had been attacked for years on end and disbelievers/islamophobes looking to completely wipe out islam off the face of the earth. If you are not meant to defend yourself after all those rules stated above for mercy and TONNES MORE in the Quran, I don't know when you can...People focus so much on other people's rights they forget that they themselves are also meant to be truthful and defend themselves in time of need, which anyone would do in a heartbeat "They do not honour the bonds of kinship or treaties with the believers. It is they who are the transgressors. But if they repent, perform prayer, and pay alms-tax, then they are your brothers in faith. This is how We make the revelations clear for people of knowledge." (9:10-11) Have you ever seen a murderer say 'I'm sorry' without some form of punishment and let go from court because of the 'kindness' of the judge. No. So what about the murder of many muslims from the TREATY in which they BROKE. Where they had to pay alms tax after they repent and decided to be peaceful again, where they become your BROTHERS and you PRAY FOR THEM. So much forgiveness considering so much pain and suffering delivered onto the prophet and the muslims. That is mercy. ALSO: "Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and fairly with those who have neither fought nor driven you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are fair. Allah only forbids you from befriending those who have fought you for ˹your˺ faith, driven you out of your homes, or supported ˹others˺ in doing so. And whoever takes them as friends, then it is they who are the ˹true˺ wrongdoers." (60:8-9) Pretty much debunks any extremeist/islamophobe claims about mindless violence in the Quran.

Azir " in the language of the Arabs is "Ezra" in the language of the Jews. As the Arabs changed in some of the words that she received from foreign languages and conducted on her tongue, as in the show of love especially, the word became smaller, so Ezra was reduced to Azir, and the Hebrew word Jesus was changed to Jesus in Arabic, and John to Yahya. After all, Ezra-or Ezra-has a special place in the history of the Jews, and some even claim to have laid the foundation stone of the Jewish nation, building their glory. In fact, he has a great service to their religion, because Bakht Nasr, King of Babylon, destroyed the Jews in his famous reality, and made their cities under the control of his soldiers, they annihilated them, demolished their temples, burned their Torahs, killed their men, cursed their women, captured their children, and brought them to Babylon, so they stayed there for about a century. When Cyrus, the king of Persia, opened Babylon, Ezra came to him, and he was one of the oldest Jews, and he begged him in the Jews, and they went home, and he wrote to them the Torah-which remained in his mind of his Jewish ancestors, and what had happened to him-again. Therefore, they respect him very much and consider him their saviour and the revivalist of their law. This caused a group of them to call him "the son of God." However, some accounts-as in the protest of Al-tabarsi-claim that they gave this title out of respect for him rather than in truth. But in the same account, we read that the Prophet asked them: "if you manifest Azir and honor him for his great services, and you call him this name, then why do you not call Moses, and he is greater to you than Azir, by this name? They did not find an answer to the question, and they knocked their heads." In any case, this designation was more than a matter of reverence and respect in the minds of a group of them. And what is familiar to the public, they hold this concept for what it is, and they claim that he is truly the son of God, because he saved them from destruction and loss, and raised their heads by writing the Torah anew. Of course, this belief was not prevalent among all Jews, but it is reported that this perception or belief was prevalent among a group of them, especially in the era of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). As evidence of this, none of the history books mentioned that when they heard the aforementioned verse, they protested against the prophet, or denied this saying, "even if it was gum." From what we have said, the following question can be answered: it is not among the Jews in our time who claim that Azira is the son of God, nor who believes in this belief.! To make this clear, not all Jews need to have such a belief, as it is enough to be recognized that, in the era of the descent of the verses on the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), there were those who believed in this belief in the Jews. The evidence of this is that none of them denied this to the prophet, and the only thing that was given to them, according to some accounts, was that they said, "This title is only for the respect of Azir", and they were unable to answer what he asked them, and they formed on them: why not then make this title for your prophet Moses?! In any case, when a word or belief is attributed to a people, it is not necessary that everyone agree, but that it is enough to have a group of people who go there.

Worshippers sitting on carpets and reading as Muslims sit reading the Qur'an. Even men prostrating - but not putting their heads on the floor. Much could be learned by observing their service and mode of prayers. Their numbers are small but perhaps you have a congregation near you - I live in Canada and doubt if there is one here. In another program, you mentioned Jews who followed Jesus as a Prophet and they embraced Islam - I wonder perhaps whether they were Karaite Jews whose numbers dwindled following conversion to Islam!

I previously thought Uzair = Ezra-El (archangel of death whose name is not mentioned among other archangels in Quran) = Osiris (Egyptian god of the underworld) = Baal (known to be worshipped by the people of Judea). For me, this Quran verse is comparing the belief of early Jews (people of Judea) to the belief of late Jews (people of Nazareth or Nazarenes). That the verse mentions the Messiah instead of Jesus, is definitely not a coincidence.

Dear Paul and Truthbearers (Persipicocious Believing Muslims), one should weary of where and from whom one aquires knowledge on the religion of Islam and IN the religion of Islam and especially matters that pertain to finer details of Aqeedah creed pertaining to creed on ilaahiyaat Divinities, Nabawiyaat Prophethood matters, and Sam3iyyaat "Heard Reports" what has been reported to us (what the Prophet related to us whether seen or unseen - especially regarding things, which cannot be fully comprehended until after death and in very few instances in ones life, like witnessing the jinn, or people like alKhidr, or the angels, or other unseen things and happenings). In this case, the author of that book, the history of the jews in Arabia, Gordon Newby, adds poisonous claim and insinuations in and to his research findings in the midst of his quest into Jewish religious communities and their differences and the references made in the scriptures and in particular, the Qur'an, one over the other. Qur'an's siding with one or the other over the wrongful one. His poisonous injection comes where he slyly points to God approving anthropomorphism in the Qur'an referencing in his demiseful delight to verse 64 of Surat alMaïdah chapter 5 refering to God's reply to 《the jew(s) who said God's yad [hand, generosity, benevolence, might] is maghloola, (as in, Shackled, dysfunctional, hindered, overpoweringly closed belittling God )》 rebuking his/their blasphemy by affirming His perfection by replying to them in kind in the Dual form. God Rebukingly replies, 《shackled are their hands,》 《Rather My *yadaay* 》 in the dual form of the noun yad 《are *mbSouTTa-taan* , (both Drawn Open at My Disposal) He gives according to His wish》. This ignorant academic critic does not have a sound grasp of the Arabic language and its or the Arab allegorical ways of speech so he assumes that God is implying that he has two hands or that he is tacitly affirming anthropomorphism. Well this is exactly where he or such researchers make wrongful indications and awaringly or unawaringly add a poisonous injection and it is where he has fallen short in whatever he claims or what they or the jews claim to be doing with regards refering to the Divine or the Truth or the Truthful or Truthful Law of living truthfully. Adding drops of arsenic into your glass of pure milk. Its not pure milk anymore nor is it safe to drink. This is a common ignorant nonArab ignoramous mistake treating Arabic texts. God replies in kind affirming His Displeasure by affirming His Perfection in Might Generosity countering their superficial understanding with what they would deem as perfect in their anthropomorphism. But in no way is God approving anthropomorphism on His Being or allowing it for the Believers to understand about Him and His Sublime Exalted Nature because He has negated any imperfection any similitude with anyone or anything in any way shape or form whether in His Being, Names, Attributes, Action, Attitude or Behavior, in other clearcut fixed unambiguous verses. Though He affirms for Himself Sight, Hearing, Speech, Knowledge, Life, and Self-Existence and Subsistence, Will and Command over all.
