Who is Metatron? The Origins of the Angel from the 3rd Book of Enoch - Sefer Hekhalot Mysticism

Metatron is probably the most powerful and mysterious Angel in Jewish lore. But what are the origins of this being known as the "Lesser Yahweh (יהוה הקתן)" ? In the 5/6th century ce Sefer Hekhalot (Book of Palaces or 3 Enoch), we go on a heavenly journey to the Throne (merkavah) of God with Rabbi Ishmael to learn that the angel Metatron was once Enoch, transformed into a being of fire, witness a host of angelic systems, a tour of the Paradise and She'ol, the Underworld, a glimpse of the Right Hand of the Divine and even a glimpse of all of cosmic history as embroidered on the veil (pargod) covering the very face of God. While the first Book of Enoch is more famous, the Third Book of Enoch is a true tour de force of apocalyptic visions and the ancient occult mysticism of those that allegedly descended to the Chariot-Throne of the Divine.

I cannot be more thankful for your channel. The passion behind providing so many people with such a scholarly and grounded perspective on esoteric topics, the amount of work that goes into each and every episode, cannot be understated. My uttermost gratitude is given unto you, as my passion for these subjects reaches taxation of yours, but I, in my limitations, could only desire to reach the amount of work you must surely put into every episode. You both inspire me and delight me in every episode. My greatest gratitude is given unto you! This is the least I can do to support such deep and devotional scholarship that you provide us all.

@@TheQuinis believe what you would like. In reading the books of Enoch you’ll see a clear difference in the 2 figures. Enoch1 is Enoch of the line of Seth. Enoch2 and enoch3 are Enoch of the line of Cain. The name Enoch means initiated or initiating Enoch of Seth was called up into the presence of God. Enoch of Cain is sitting on a throne(the imitation of the throne of God) Enoch of Seth was on his face before the throne Enoch of Cain has no problem accepting worship There are 2 types of initiations. Initiation in Mystery of Christ in you(good initiating) or initiation In the mystery of iniquity or mystery Babylon (bad initiating) We must remember that for everything holy of the father there is an imitation of satan. And the sons of Cain were jealous of the sons of Seth. So I think Enoch of Cain was initiated into the mystery of iniquity by the fallen watchers and taught things like the building of the pyramid and Enochian magic. And all that is of the mystery schools. Since the fallen watcher couldn’t ascend and through jealousy of Enoch of Seth ascending. The watchers taught Enoch of Cain all the mystery’s so he could build/find a way to ascend thus creating this imitation for the throne. Since acquiring this knowledge and as it is written in genesis 3:22 behold the man is become as one of us. Through the initiation of the mysteries becoming enlightened and received his name Metatron after transforming into an angle.

  • @Dowlphin

    @Dowlphin

    10 ай бұрын

@@jmontoya4689 By searching for God, you serve God. If you search sincerely, which includes not being afraid of finding; in fact, it might be natural that if you are not afraid during the process, then you haven't really found God. If you can accept that God is the realm of love, then you have to understand that love is a uniting force, non-discriminating, and that reconnecting to God (=religare) means shedding distinctions, eventually fully merging with The One. From that can come a pantheistic understanding, somewhat related to the christian concept of the holy spirit, that God is all that is, including us, and that we are the living implementation of God's will of infinite diversity as a self-exploration. Then from that can come a more mature understanding of fear, the egoic mind's discriminations, as a necessary counterpole on the search for God so that through contrast we can come to understand the journey. The really scary part of the journey is not the confrontation with death but the acceptance of death as part of the divine experience. Because the egoic mind was made to protect from death, and by regarding death as meaningless, the ego experiences a destruction of its purpose, its reason to exist, because it lacks the mature understanding that transcending fear of death doesn't mean letting death reign supreme; quite the opposite, because resistance to the concept, fear of it, is what creates the suffering.

Somewhere along the line I got the idea that Metatron wasn't an 'additional power in Heaven' per se but that the 'lesser Yahweh' applied because when a natural (post-flood?) human would communicate with the Lord, it was Metatron who made the actual appearance, as a mystical loudspeaker, because The Almighty is so far beyond the bounds of human comprehension that using the Metatron as an intermediary creates an encounter humans can process. But the words of the Metatron in that context are Yahweh verbatim so the human really is communicating with Yahweh. PS everything makes more sense with D&D references.

Thanks for continuing to produce quality informative videos like this. This is fascinating to me, and it really does feel like the esoteric theological speculation of a group of people at a particular place and time influenced not only literary works like this, but also the development of early Christianity and Rabbinic Judaism, and as a result the nature of Western Culture itself. With my own faith background my mind immediately goes to the phrase "and is seated at the right hand of the Father" from the Nicean Creed. And since every word in the creed is there for a reason, they must have considered that important enough to include.

Thanks for your channel Dr.Sledge - been binge watching for 3 days now and loving it. This video about what you might call the apotheosis of Enoch is something I've always wondered about. I grew up Mornon, and after leaving the religion I've wondered so many things about how Joseph Smith and, to some extent Brigham Young, developed their thought. The ability to become a god in Mormonism seems so divorced from a any version of Christianity Smith may have been exposed to in the New England 2nd Great Awakening. But, Smith and a number of his cohorts learned Hebrew from Josiah Seixas made me wonder if he was able.to come into contact with literature like 3rd Enoch and that is where he got his ideas on ascension from. He was heavily influenced by free masonry of course, but even that doesn't seem to explain how he came up with becoming a god, while be becoming a "little Yahweh" explains his theology almost exactly.. Being exposed to Enochian literature might have. I don't know how available it was at the time to him, but still. Anyway, thanks for this episode and all you do.

As always, another great video. When we hear the word "angel" in the West we think of fluffy Scandinavian beings with wings but the actual Aramaic word used is "malakha" and means "messenger." Wings were symbolic of higher consciousness. These teachings were symbolic about the inner workings of the nephesh (soul) and not literal realms above our heads. Again, great video with great material references.

The wings just represent the fact that angels (lit., envoys of a lord) can fly. Wings make the idea of flight (or levitation) comprehensible to a pre-industrial people who had no technological context for flight (except for birds). Also, it’s not symbolic.

Angel also just means messenger in Greek. the "angel" in the word "evangelize" or "evangelical" doesn't refer to the servants of god, it just means a message. eu - good, angel - message, messenger. so really, angel is just a translation of malakh also angels are not said to have wings in the Bible. the idea of angels having wings comes from Renaissance art

Two powers in heaven (even after the older El-Yahweh or Yahweh-Asherah as two main gods) seems to be present in final Biblical text. The "Angel of the Lord" is talked about as a being which can manifest on earth and through which God acts and speaks - in first person, and people interacting with it say they have heard and/or seen God, but besides that identification of the two it is also clear they are not the one and the same, being that they talk to each other and one is sent by the other. Add to that the personification of God's wisdom in the wisdom literature, plus the 'son of man' in Daniel, and you have a clear Two powers in heaven theology, which then Paul and the 'Apostolic Fathers' just apply to Jesus. Of course it helped that the then contemporary philosophies of Middle Platonism and Neopythagoreanism had developed basically the same theology, saying how God doesnt simply create the world, but acts through a secondary divinity which is emanated from him, a view that already found its way in Judaism by Philo, who used the term Logos for it. Certainly an interesting topic to read more about.

Jesus is the part of God we are modelled after, The Father is the creator and the vengeful God seen in the old testament, and the holy spirit is how the father and son physically manifest themselves to us.

There is a section on Metatron in my own book, ‘The Book of Angels: Seen and Unseen’ (2019). The Zohar calls Metatron ‘the Youth’, a title also used in 3 Enoch, where it appears to mean something like ‘servant’. Indeed, he has been identified with the ‘suffering servant’/ ‘man of sorrows’ of Isaiah 53 (more usually equated with Christ). He has been called the ‘Liberating Angel’ and the Shekinah (the glory of the divine presence). It has been claimed that he is the twin brother, or alternatively the half-brother, of the angel Sandalphon and with the possible exception of Anafiel (‘the branch of God’, the angel that carried Enoch to Heaven in the first place) is said to be the tallest angel in heaven. (The Zohar calculates his size as ‘equal to the breath of the whole world’, which in rabbinic lore was the size of Adam before he sinned.) Metatron is said to reside in the seventh Heaven (the dwelling place of God), with the seraphim, cherubim and thrones. Gershom Scholem, the 20th century German-born Israeli philosopher and historian, argues that Metatron’s character has been influenced by two streams of thought-one which linked Metatron with Enoch and a second that fused different obscure entities and mythic motifs. Scholem argues that this second tradition was originally separate but later became fused with the Enoch tradition. Scholem theorizes that the two Hebrew spellings of Metatron’s name (one of six letters טטרון) and one of seven מיטטרון are representative of these two separate traditions. In his view, the second Metatron is linked to Yahoel (seen as a substitute for the Ineffable Name). Scholem also links Yahoel with Michael. In 2 Enoch, Enoch is assigned titles commonly used by Metatron such as ‘the Youth’, ‘the prince of the Presence’ and ‘the prince of the World’, while in 3 Enoch, Metatron (as mentioned) is called the ‘lesser YHWH’. The second chapter of the Tractate Hagigah describes Elishah ben Abuyah (a rabbi and Jewish authority born in Jerusalem sometime before 70 AD), also called Acher (אחר, ‘other’, as he became apostate), in paradise and observes Metatron seated in the presence of God (a prohibited action). Elishah ben Abuyah concluded that Metatron must be a deity himself and exclaimed: ‘There are indeed two powers in Heaven!’ The rabbis explain that Metatron had permission to sit because of his function as the heavenly scribe and the Talmud states, it is proven that Metatron could not be a second deity by the fact that he received 60 ‘strokes with fiery rods’ to demonstrate that he was not a god, but an angel, and could be punished. In 3 Enoch, or the Sefer Hekhalot (Book of Palaces), Enoch’s transformation into the angel Metatron is described, in which Enoch’s flesh was turned to flame, his veins to fire, his eye-lashes to flashes of lightning and his eyeballs to flaming torches. God placed him on a throne next to the throne of glory and gave him the name Metatron. According to one particular legend he was transformed into a fiery angel with 36 wings and countless eyes. It is speculated that the name Metatron may have been made up of two Greek words for after and throne μετὰ θρóνος (meta-thronos), taken together as ‘one who serves behind the throne’ or ‘one who occupies the throne next to the throne of glory’. However, Scholem sees ‘no merit’ in ‘this widely repeated etymology’.

Thomas Karlsson is GREAT! Personally, I was introduced to Kabbalah, first of all, through Black Metal music. Specifically, through the music of Swedish bands DISSECTION and WATAIN, whose lyrics deal specifically with the realm of the Qliphoth and the notion of the "Anti-cosmic Deities"... the Divine, Demonic entities born from the "Left Side of God", the utter depths of His Anti-Creation pulsion, the Aur She-Ain Bo Machshavah, the Blessed Black Light, the "Light-Devoid-Of-Thoughts-of-Creation" (or simply "Thoughtless Light", in Scholem ´s words). After that, came the great "Qabbalah, Qliphoth and Goetic Magic" by mr. Karlsson. And after that... the Occult books of N.A-A.218. Yup. It has been a long journey exploring these realms of Jewish Esoterism.

Wow. I knew about the scene in the Talmud where Metatron is whipped. (Which I took as a simple common sense "Don't mistake even this powerful Archangel for God!" message.) And I knew Metatron was popular among Jewish mystics, especially in the Merkavah school(s). I even knew about the tale of the Rabbis who practiced Merkavah - one going insane, another apostate, another became a heretic, and only the Baal Shem Tov returned intact. BUT - I had never realized all of these things were connected in a massive "Two Powers in Heaven" heresy that went down around the same time Christianity was getting started... Great episode!!! :) :) :)

You don't practice Merkavah, it comes to you spontaneously in the right incarnatio. You may not even have the words or understand what it is until much later in your life. Very similar to Ezekial, not symbolic at all, very literal. And you have to surrender all parts of yourself into oblivion to "sit at the throne of the just" most people do not make it back after that point, unless you are truly pure and you surrender wholly to the divine. And you have no fear or hate in your heart.

@@aquasol333 - I disagree that Merkavah is not a "practice." It very much is, and there are some rather dense texts concerning it. I also disagree that the Vision of Ezekiel is "not symbolic." Excellent work, Dr Sledge! An interesting moment to contemplate is when Enoch was asked to come before the lord, and as he does, trembling, cowering, the lord states something to the effect of: "Enoch, I knew thee in name". Seeming to imply that, even though Enoch had forgotten his previous life, somehow his soul had a relationship with the lord (perhaps as Sandalphon or a scribe?).

Great video and an amazing topic! I can imagine how (with the comment that Enoch is much discussed in Nag Hammadi inferring possible popularity with the Essene Sect) this idea of two powers in heaven could lead into the trinity of Christianity. It's a short ride from Lesser Yahweh to Son of G_d. With Jesus on the right hand of G_d and the Holy Spirit as the connection for the downloading of divine power (pure speculation for sure, but there is so little to go on here). It does lead me to put it together with a dash of the Pythagorean School, shake vigorously and add a few Roman Emperors to the mix and Voila! a recipe for a new apocalyptic religion. But that is a lot of conclusion jumping....I better wait for backup.
