You need to make grooves for welding lathe shaved the weld ----^---- lathe no weld -------- ---- v ---- the groove will be filled by welding then lathe -----v-----
Sketchy. He annealed the shaft to make it soft enough for the tool to machine it but never re hardened it......... cash the check quick!

Everything is fine except for harding ,this type of drive shaft takes high torque, and the harding must be maintained

Also, the weld between and plate with the bolt pattern and the rest of the shaft is suspect. Using threading to keep things aligned is a great idea, but the weld that was done is not full penetration. You can use the threading to align for welding on one side, but then you need to cut a v from the other side so that you get a full weld all the way through. The threaded connection as done is basically two welds separated by an incipient crack. Overtorque and it's going to crack.

Never a good idea to weld in your lathe with the current going through the heads stock bearings. Imagine millions of arcs across your nice shiny bearings. I can also imagine to get an axel repaired here in Australia. When the laughing finally died down and the dead mechanics were dragged off. (From laughing) They would say “You want what?” Insert another laughing cycle. You’d have a snow flakes hope in hell of getting anyone to event entertain the idea.
