The Meaning Behind ONE And Its Finale - A Forever Untold Story

ONE made by @CheesyHfj
and his glorious crew.
ONE is the line between object shows and actual shows.
I mostly make comedy videos,
but this I just couldn't get out of my head.
I made this in a whole week.
NOTICE:
I have sadly taken down the link to the video in question.
The person in question literally a week later turned out to be controversial.
Just my luck, lads.
I am sorry if I have upset anyone, I did as much as I could,
but the youtube editor is frustrating to work with.
Thanks for understanding!

I have a feeling that there is a slight chance that it will come back, but only 4 episodes, a half season if you will where Liam helps the contestants back by figuring out the code. Though he stays there unable to return home. Maybe he’d find a way to get Airy back.. Remember this is just a theory it may not happen.

I think the main problem with the community reaction to one was that they missed the point of the show, but its not their fault, most of the community are young kids who don't have a lot of experience with literature. One is at its base a satire about the object show - a satire is criticism, but its not in to teach anyone how do their job, its an observer who simply shows what it sees. One has more "mirrors" to the object show community and creators, more then the cancelling, One is a story about stories, and the nature of a passionate person to get overwhelmed and burned out (although it isn't displayed so clearly in the show - airy breaks his face, but he's not in a coma for 7 months, he's still going around, as you can hear him sing in the end of ONE 8. it shows how sometimes things in life can overwhelm us or hurt us, and even thought we're not gone, we need to know to stop and heal before we keep going.). One really follows 2 paths of criticism, one is the nature of object shows creation, like i just discussed, and the other is about the treatment the contestants get - putting real people into the characters and having them go through the average object show runtime. I think a lot of viewers empathized too much with the characters that they missed the point the show is trying to show, and looked at the satire if it was a completely serious thing. And in some part, I think One is many peoples first interactions with actual piece of literature, not that Im blaming anyone, again most of the osc are too young to even interact with these stuff yet, but seeing as how the time goes on and people start to let the ending sink in, and realize what the show really meant, its really comforting to see they actually learnt something from this "experience" i could sit here all day writing more and more about how brilliantly the show played with many people (i would even make a video but i have 0 editing skills), but no one would read it, so i hope One helps more people get into literature and find stories with more interest in them more.

I see one as a love letter and spit in the face to most object shows, alot of object show characters have little to no personality but when they get an ending that doesn’t feel satisfactory because of the lack OF personality, while ONE makes you want to see them succeed, you want MORE of them, only to give you nothing. Many object shows go on for what feels to long, ONE cuts it off for what feels to short

I completely undestand this take but I disagree with it a lot, I think ONE is a satire of stories in general and a criticism of the audience, ONE is a tragedy every viewer gets to view. ONE at every turn is roping it’s audience closer and closer while outright TELLING the audience that not everything gets closure, Parker doesn’t get closure, Liam cant let go of ONE, Nobody gets what they want in this show. Ever. One of the best things about this ending is that Liam could’ve SAVED them, it’s because of Liam needing his answers, needing CLOSURE for his tragedy that he dooms his life winds to eternal hell basically. One tells the viewer that stories don’t always get endings, you don’t get what you want and you have to let go sometimes. It’s like an antithesis to storytelling.

  • @TheSongGame

    @TheSongGame

    Жыл бұрын

Yes, that is an excellent way to look at it! If I understand this correctly, then yes, this show can be interpreted as a lack of closure, however, everything in your statement basically depends on what *could've* happened, my main focus in this here "theory" was that we don't really know what *would've* happened, that we can't really theorize about the show, that we just do not know ONE. We could interpret it, we could share our opinions on it, and we could speculate on it, but we could never know what would indeed happen. That was my main point, I even ended the video with me saying that this all could be wrong because we truly do not know ONE. You are basically proving my point, that there can be a lot of interpretations as to why ONE was how it is and I appreciate that. Your interpretation is very much valid, thanks for the comment!

In this video I was trying to explain why the ending was the way it was, not the way it should’ve been. I actually binged all of ONE today and just. I don't think the series ended on a cliffhanger, or on anything bad really, i think it really just hammered home that feeling of hopelessness that continues throughout the series. There were never any voters, there was never any prize, the rest of the contestants might NEVER get out, and we'll never know if they will. It's heartbreaking, but its perfect, and genius. It's a series that bring out an emotion other series, let alone NO object shows for that matter, have gotten out of me. Helplessness. But still the urge and need for these characters to get some kind of happy ending. Even though they might not canonically have one, i think what Cheesy does do is let us decide for ourselves if we think Liam DID find a way to let everyone out, or if he never found out how. Even if he did find a way, he'll never see them again, he'll be trapped in this forest world place until he eventually dies for real. But hey, ONE makes you think, and I think characters or stories that make you think even when its all over, even if those thoughts arent always happy ones, it's still done a successful and amazing job.

ONE wasn't a happy show, so it only made sense that it had an unhappy ending as well as it leaving the viewer with the main idea of the show, No one has true control over anything. Airy's death shows this perfectly, and the fake voting, and the rejoining, and airy plugging the plane back in after the contestant unplugged it, and Liam drowing. The list goes on and on. Liam just started the cycle again, keeping it going perpetually. it seems like airy wasn't the first person in the "forest" as we can see precut logs and vines along with the planets. regardless if the world of One is never-ending it doesn't matter because our viewport into the world does have an ending, and now it is over.

This is probably not what you're talking about but take the questions about the waiting room as an example. many questions about the waiting room or the radio could never get an answer because finding the answer would require the characters to gain access to information that they never could realistically find. a lot of the questions left open in ONE are like that because the characters don't have a possible way to find that information. Sorry if this sounds rude or angry im genuinely not trying to be rude i just like talking about this kind of thing

whats weird is that i haven't seen a single person bring up the fact that Airy is just a straight up sociopath. Like, hits the definition to a T. If he somehow wasn't, then it would make more sense for him to not know that these are real people. But no, he knows. And even when confronted with the pain and suffering he is causing them. He just doesn't understand. He doesn't understand the cues of why they don't want to play in the competition either. Early on when they are refusing to climb the pole, Airy just assumes "oh so it must be too hard. Maybe if I make it easier they will do it." And it seems the only reason he was scared for the contestants well-being in the first ONE was because if they died, then they couldn't be brought back. But with the second ONE its completely fine if they die. Even if its painful or causes trauma. Because they can just come back! Honestly, what ticked me off to this is that there is a character very similar to this in Breaking Bad, named Todd Alquist. Don't got to be too specific but, he enslaves someone and forces them to make meth while also torturing him psychologically and letting his buddy's physically torture him. But when the victim almost escapes and has a gun pointed to Todd's head, Todd just offers to buy him some pizza. Completely just not having the social and moral cues to understand why he would want to point a gun at him anyways. Any ordinary person would assume that they should probably not turn their back to Liam. As even if they didn't know what they were doing, the crimes that they are accused of are enough to excuse murder. meanwhile Airy is just kind of confused. And doesn't understand why the contestants would need to leave now.

The thing about ONE that I find ingenious is just how it plays out overall. On the surface, it seems like an object show, especially towards the beginning, but it goes far deeper than that. ONE isn't just an object show; it's a new and never-before-seen iteration of one that avoids the normal formula and shows a much more sinister side. ONE as a whole is shrouded in mystery, with each answered question getting replaced by multiple new ones, some of which remaining unanswered indefinitely. A lot of the show revolves around the first and main 6 characters, since they're more than just objects themselves, further representing how ONE isn't just a standard object show. We see characters getting traumatized and hurt by what Airy does and yet Airy continues despite them telling him to stop. Characters who were interested in the competition at first slowly become uninterested and upset because of what Airy is causing. He seems to be completely unaware or oblivious to the pain he's causing these people (the main 6) and the rest of the objects, and even when Liam tells him to stop and tries to kill him, he persists anyways. Airy still helps Liam despite his desire to kill him, but Airy's sudden death changes everything and introduces the most important questions of all. The fact that these questions will never be answered signifies the show's abnormal and mysterious nature. ONE, which I theorize to stand for "Of No End", wasn't meant for an ending; it was meant to defy the odds and create a story that remains undiscoverable, leaving the viewer to decide for themselves.

I guess ONE shows what it would be like for objects that would have human emotions and personalities to 'participate' in an object show, which, of course, gets cancelled. And because it got cancelled you don't know how it ends.

Many people criticize ONE for its untold ending, but I think it was done very well. It provided several possible endings, and it’s up to us to decide which one could of been the correct ending.

airy just forgot how to socialize with the outside world, in the first season of one calculator said he kept saying sorry for his mistakes. Now he doesn't say sorry because he lost touch with society. He was drove into being psycothic by loneliness.

I think what so many people never realize is that not every story has to have a happy ending. In fact, in my opinion, I always felt that bad endings hit harder than good ones, when you watch the hero do everything they can to get to stop whatever the bad situation is only for them to fail, it hits harder than the belt.

disclaimer: don’t take this offensively please the last episode was called “self tilted” I think this means we are supposed to imagine it in our own way, feel how we think we should feel about how airy was taking control and how Liam tried to save it but failed and airy died, airy was the only person who knew how to put the people back, although it is unfinishedI think it had what it needed

late to the party, only discovered this show recently, but i was fairly satisfied with the ending. with time, i would think liam could potentially save the rest of the gang through some trial and error. iirc each contestant had a kill command that reset them, right? so they could use that if any mistakes are made, no harm really done. hell, he could probably find a way to get himself back home with enough experimenting.

As someone who's as far apart of the object show community as can be, I think the ending is like that so that we, the viewers, can decide how it ends. Just like how you guys vote on what happens when an episode ends - who leaves and who doesn't? We decide that. We can decide whether the people stuck there leave or not. We decide whether Liam leaves or not.

More to support this theory: all of BFC. Battle for circle was cheesyhfj's previous satirical object show. All the characters were circle, the host was circle the land was an empty void and the challenges even shallower than ever. It was a rather blunt satire (and is even said in one episode) of object shows developing zero plot. Characters don't grow, they all feel incredibly basic, none of them have any depth. To even go beyond cheesy then goes out of his way to develop a unique character: circle with a mole. ITS NO COINCIDENCE THAT HE APPEARS IN ONE! Most importantly there's a gag in BFC where for a while the host calls everything "Zero". Almost like a precursor to One huh? One, like BFC, is both an extension of the criticism of OSC and proof that more can be done with the format.

I feel like cheesy did this because it was like the objects had a life. Like us. And sometimes. Life doesnt always work out. But in the end. It will sometimes work after a bit of work. Because when airy died liam was trying to code a way to get them back. Hes probably still learning and soon enough. He will do it. One is like life. Uncomplete. Dissapointing. And most of all. Scary.
