When I was a little kid, my mom would buy me a Matchbox car every week when we went grocery shopping. I was 8 when Lesney went out of business. I still have several of the old English-made Lesney Matchbox cars, a reminder of my childhood. Excellent documentary!
Nothing but RESPECT for this man.
A very honorable man, who has done so much for the collectors community and an awesome collection 😊.
nice documentary! im only 17 years old, and loves to collect the old matchbox toys! got over 120+ boxed old matchbox models from the 60s and 70s +30 blister packs from 70s, and my collection is still growing! 😬
Oh my goodness. This was the greatest discovery of all time for me on KZread today! One of the best docus I know. The funny thing is: Charlie is probably exactly my age group and I experienced all this myself at the same time - my father brought me my first Matchbox car when I was about 5 years old: the MORRIS PICK-UP TRUCK No.60. Others followed, and later I bought the cars myself. I also experienced the SUPERFAST period as the high point. Then it ended around 1972. I still have all my MATCHBOXES in the archive. And I take them out from time to time. And of course I still have the original catalogs from the 60s and 70s! All in all, I have to say: we had a wonderful childhood! - A thousand thanks to Charlie for this great journey through time.
It's been such a delight to watch this doc. Extremely well made allowing Charlie Mac to lead the narrative. I started collecting just about a year ago as I have a 2 year old who showed great signs of picking out small details of cars ,quizzed why the lamborghini mainline did not have a "radiator" since the previous mini cooper had one! Lol! I wish to make a small collection for her one day to leave a decent legacy behind

Sorry Ameya but I'm going to have to call your Bull Shit out on this one....Sorry You started collecting a year ago because your "2 Year Old" questioned why a model lamborghi didn't have a radiator yet the Model of the Mini did?.?.?.? I ain't no psychologist and I really hope you were joking because if your serious and you really think you've convinced anybody that your "2 year old girl ,Questioned you on Radiators being in different places on matchbox cars?" Then I would suggest you go seek some help (medical) or get your girl recognised as she's obviously A Genius, My 2 year old must be broken as he can't tell the difference from a Car to Van.........they all get named broom ,broom....and he might know wheels and Horn
A perfect documentary on the Matchbox Toys; I have been an avid fan of them starting in 1961 through to around 2000. I still have my first two models from '61. Thank you for this documentary Mr. Charlie Mack

@@kingsofdocs7228 How would I go about joining his club?
There are two words you are absolutely forbidden to utter, under any circumstances, when visiting Charlie's museum: Hot Wheels.
I have nothing but respect but my neighbor guy claims and looks to have 50,000 matchbox as well, he has a big room full of the original boxed Matchbox cars and a barn full of extras, they literally take up half the barn top to bottom. This is an epic set, but i live in the middle of nowhere, how many more guys like my neighbor exists that nobody knows about?

I LOVE vintage matchbox toys.
My Mother worked at the Lesney factory in the 1960s making these cars. Needless to say as a small kid I got a big collection. Sadly all since long gone. The factory is now gone with a luxury tower block on the site as they "try" to gentrify east London
I remember seeing a story in our newspaper on Charlie Mack and his Museum in an adjacent town. My wife arraigned for me to visit as an Anniversary Gift. Charlie was a Gentleman and very enthusiastic. Very well done documentary.
I live near to where the original Lesney factory was based (its long gone and on its site is an expensive apartment complex). Lesney busses used to travel all over the borough, picking up and dropping off workers at various points. My sister worked at the Lesney factory and one of my main school projects was writing the history of the company, including drawing the queens carriage and horses. It was one of the biggest employers in the borough for many years. This was a lovely documentary of a fascinating man and his lifelong passion, which I hugely enjoyed.
I`ll be 65 soon as well and cherished the couple hundred Matchbox I had as a kid. When Hot Wheels came along, even though they were flashier-looking, I still preferred the heavier solid Matchbox series.
Don’t know if anyone else has mentioned this but the factory was on Hackney Marshes east end of London, my aunt worked there, and as a kid she would often bring me home factory rejects, if only I had been more astute and kept them, but many happy memories, thank you for this
Charlie is The Man, I have 3 volumes of his book. I dabbled in Hotwheels in the late 70s but always loved Matchbox more. Great documentary, thanks . Bruce NZ
What a guy, total respect from England UK
I was born in 58...when I was 6 I explored these old shed at the bottom of my Grandparents garden - countless Matchbox Toys that had belonged to my Father - always knew I should have kept them!
Fantastic collection. I remember finding Charlie Mack´s Matchbox books at Barnes & Nobles approx. 22 years ago and I still enjoy looking at them.
I thought I had an impressive collection of 300 boxed Matchbox cars but this guy is on a whole different level - You have my respect, Sir. I remember buying the 1968 catalogue (I was 9 years old) and set out to get a whole set of 1 thru 75,,,,trouble was the new releases never stopped. The toy shops where I lived in England were owned by two brothers wearing brown hardware coats and they would follow you round the store to make sure you didn’t steal anything. The shops are long gone but the joy of collecting remains.
I was never heavy on my toys, but over the years they were hammered by cousins etc. So many of these 50s cars and vans have passed through my hands and all that I have 60+ years later are two double deckers , both windowless and one a trolley bus that has lost its poles. Loved seeing these again and especially their packaging.
I just recently acquired two of Charlie's books he made on Matchbox castings, and have loved looking through them. Great documentary! It has been so much fun learning about the history of Matchbox ever since I started adult collecting them in 2019. This video gives a lot of great information that is invaluable to any collector wanting to learn more about the brand.
I always preferred Matchbox over Hot Wheels. As a kid I preferred the realism of Matchbox cars. The Hot Wheels we’re more goofy looking.

My sentiments exactly. As a kid in the 80s I always preferred how Matchbox looked like the actual cars they were supposed to be. I had an old hard shell suitcase full of em growing up. Definitely my fav toys to play with back then.
What a lovely video. The passion this man has for something he loves... The innocence of it in a modern world that is so full of corruption. I loved this little video, despite knowing nothing about the subject. Well done. Love from England.
I, too was obsessed with Matchbox and "redline" Hot Wheels. As kids growing up in the mid to late 60's, it was what WE DID...! All my friends would come over to each other's homes and play with cars.
This is such a fascinating documentary! I have a collection, myself. Extremely modest compared to what you see here, but it's cool to see him feature a model and I say, "I have that!" I don't have any boxes though, LOL
Good to see that Charlie is still going strong!
this collection is way worth more than 1million as it stands.......imagine all the time and effort it has taken to acquire such a collection.

This is so nostalgic. I grew up in the 70's and had hundreds of mb,every birthday I would get a super kings. It's strange as a 51 year old who visits toy fairs, I see thousands of loose played with mb in big boxes that sellers almost can't give away. Folks seem more inclined to collect dinky or corgi........ Matchbox made plastic soldiers and model kits and train sets as well, it covered all the bases for most kids. The hot wheels takeover was seen as a cheapening of the brand here in England, and lack that certain "something " that the originals had 😟
What a bloke.a true gentleman .speaking of his love for matchbox . Well done sir.

Car collector I also own a 118 scale models as well as 1 64 skill models that are from Hot Wheels Auto art greenlight Johnny lightning and one or two matchbox models and iPad matchbox models ever since I was a kid playing with them back in the early '70s and I still have them. This young man without a doubt is not only a collector but he's a historian I mean he is the man if you want to know anything about matchbox he probably KNOWS IT!!! Very amazing video it's amazing listening to his vast knowledge!!! Of the matchbox brand and it history.!!! Fantastic video.
Awesome, impressive!! beautiful!!! I grew up collecting Matchbox cars first and still collect them but up until the time Mattel purchased them. I don't like how Mattel makes them now or then, a shame.
Very nice document, I enjoy it as a guy who grew up in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Love those little cars and I still collect them.
after 60 years still got my favorites 58 caddy, 59 impala, pink t bird, 64 pontiac. got to make a shelf for all my old friends

Finally! Some credit for a overlooked toy. Thanks for posting. I’m a diecast nut. Sold all my matchboxes but have a huge collection of other pre 70’s. Most very rare.

I thoroughly enjoyed this doc on this avid Matchbox collector. I am a Matchbox collector myself, but I do not nowhere have a collection as Mr. Mack has. I started collecting Matchbox cars at a very young age and collected them up into my late teens. Then I stopped for several years though I liked to look at the latest models. Then a few years back, I began looking on Ebay and have bought several earlier models and have built up my collection little by little. Thanks for this documentary and I need to buy one of Mr. Mack's books as well.
Hi. Great to watch such an interesting video of such an iconic piece of my childhood. I am not still a collector although do still have many of the cars and trucks all very well used and somewhat abused I am afraid to admit to up in my loft. My biggest memory from the early 60’s was that my lovely dad who worked in a car factory here in the Uk would buy me one most weeks on his payday and I so as you would imagine look forward to him coming home from work on a Friday. Thanks for allowing me to re visit such happy memories from such a wonderful time of my life. Paul 👍
True classics of Matchbox
I was a collector in the 1970s. I had several hundred 1-75 models, a couple hundred Models of Yesteryear and about 100 MajorPack, SuperKings and SpeedKings. I stopped buying in the late 1980s, when the company was still independent. I probably have a lot of them still, in storage somewhere. If I'm not mistaken, Lesley was in talks with LEGO in it's early days, to be a distributor of the then-new plastic building kits.
Hello, Mr. Mack! In 1969 I was an avid Matchbox 1-75 collector with about 300 models in various conditions, mostly new with box. When Stupidfast came out, I stopped collecting cold turkey, and felt a collecting 'withdrawl'. I sold the collection to a dear friend for $1,000 in 1989. Your colorful books allow me to vicariously enjoy my collection by proxy, and am amazed at the lengths you've achieved. Congratulations! Marty's Matchbox is my new favorite KZread channel. I wish you and I had grown up together--we're the same age! (I was in southern CA, age 13 in '69). Happy Holidays!

Wow, that was a trip down memory lane, those little cars, for me, capture days of innocence and imagination, ill never stop collecting them, as an adult, but I'm so glad the early cars are preserved and cherished thanks to people like you .well done sir.
Wow, what a fabulous collection, thanks so very much for reminding many of us of our childhood toys that are now very collectable artefacts, Charlie has a definite eye for these amazing models and his knowledge of his subject must be limitless
Very well done..I've always loved matchbox, and actually went to the London toy museum and saw the most impressive collection of matchbox I've seen to date..Charlie's museum is definitely on my bucketlist..
I love the paper monthly newsletter. Anathema to this digital age. Brilliant.
Oh my God so many of these models I owned myself as a child. I loved my matchbox cars and bitterly resented the transition from the sustainable and useful box to the flashy and wasteful bubble pack. I also straddled the regular wheels-whizz wheels transition, often getting the same model with both kinds of wheels. My childhood collection contained a large amount of Dinky and Corgi as well, but Matchbox was better suited for the scale of the model railway. Great footage, great use of macro lens, beautiful connection by KZread of collector with people who covet what he collects. I collect vicariously through him, and this guy in particular is a dedicated completist collector. I enjoyed all the personal touches about Lesney the man and other people associated with Matchbox.
I loved my matchbox cars still had them till early 2000s. Now I regret partying with my toys. Although I bought a few cars later but don't replace the ones that you played with as a child.
I had many of those, from the 1960s! The GT40 was my favorite, and led to my car hobby today!
I had quite a few Matchbox cars in the early seventies here in New Zealand ' I didnt realize they were a big seller in America. I think my favourite was my mettalic green ford group 6 (p68) sports racer. I've only got two from when I was a kid ' one has exhaust pipes that move up and down ??? ' and a Alfa Romeo Carrabo.
Great video, took me back to my youth when I used to look in the window of the corner shop for the latest in the matchbox display and wish I could afford everyone.
I had a bunch of Matchbox cars when I was a kid. Played with them all the time so they were pretty beat up. As a boy I never thought of just collecting them just to look at. I guess whatever the price you could get for them today I got that much playing with them.
Thanks for doing the documentary. You brought back memories of my parents buying the same stuff you showcased. I still collect too. Many brands but but mostly hotwheels and matchbox. I liked the fact you picked the 2020 releasse of the 1941 cadillac as example of a new matchbox cadting. It is a clasic matchbox casting. I feel that in many ways it is the older collectors. Not just matchbkx but other newer brands like greenlight and m2 are geared at the older collector. You have vefy good collection. I hope that you have some in mind to take over the collection when it comes time to fir its new home.
My weekly allowance was 50 cents in 1969 (I was 9) and coincidentally matchbox cars were also 50 cents. My favorite was the yellow cab chevy Impala taxi. Still have that one.
That green MG 1100 in the thumbnail lured me into this video. I once had a stranger approach me in a parts store, who gave me a gift of that same matchbox car, complete with the dog in the passenger seat. He had been carrying it around for weeks, hoping to run into me. Weeks earlier, he had seen me driving down the street in our small Wyoming town in my green Austin America, and he decided that the stranger in the green America needed to have a matching matchbox car!

This was great! I to grew up with matchbox growing up in the 70’s 80’s even early 90’s but then hot wheels bought the company and that ended the quality of matchbox for me, they were always going to stay second place to hot wheels cars which I never liked even growing up. I guess matchbox was more of an accurate reinterpretation of the design of a car but I did like the funky 70’s style cars.
Incredible collection.......and INCREDIBLE condition of the collection.......
An Amazing collection...I still have a catalogue from 70's
Bought this encyclopedia, priceless information inside! Very amazing collection, thanks to you and to Charlie for sharing it with us, very inspiring!!!

We were very poor but my mother still bought me a model if I did well in school until my father died in 1964. About 15 years ago, I resumed collecting when I was wondering what to display on my TV cabinet. The models I had as a boy are distinguished by a thread tied to the wheels.
Excellent video and MB museum! Out if the 20 or so I had back in the mid-60's, only two remain in my cabinet. No idea where the other ones went..

Just pick up the new castings I like now, though they're really hard to find in the UK for reasons best known to the jerks at Mattel.
WONDERFUL JOB
Me and my brother had match box and hot wheels collections from 69 on up when when we lived in university district Detroit and we would use books as houses for the cars ... I preferred matchbox over hot wheels ( the ones I had for the most part didn’t have numbers or anything painted on them , I liked them plan unlike the hot wheels that were emblazons ... I still have some now , my favorites the gold convertible roles Royce and the red rolls , I had 3 of each now I’ve just one of each and a total of around 15
