A rare look behind-the-scenes at Hot Wheels, the popular toy cars

Hot Wheels have delighted children and adults alike for over half a century. First introduced in 1968, millions of the miniature vehicles are wrapped and waiting to be opened Christmas morning. CBS News' Jamie Yuccas is here with a behind-the-scenes look at how the cars are designed.
"CBS Saturday Morning" co-hosts Jeff Glor, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson deliver two hours of original reporting and breaking news, as well as profiles of leading figures in culture and the arts. Watch "CBS Saturday Morning" at 7 a.m. ET on CBS and 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

26 years-old. I gave in and finally listened to that desire for Hot Wheels I've been ignoring for years because of fear of embarrassment, but knowing a lot of people collect them reassures me. I personally like weird Hot Wheels (ex: Fast Foodies), the rare older models (I got my first Deora II today!), or the real life cars. It's weird, I don't like racing in real life, but I like rally cars in Hot Wheels ha.

I'm a female, and I wanted to be into Hot Wheels as a kid. But I only had Matchbox cars my dad would get w/ every few fill-ups at the local gas station. My older brothers had Hot Wheels track that got used so much it was held together w/ electrical tape. I always wanted to play using my Matchbox cars, but I didn't know the base of the cars was bigger and wouldn't fit on the track. But now I have lots of cars, cases and track. I even bought a mini set for my 18 inch boy dolls, using 2 Hallmark Hot Wheels ornaments, (a finish line and loop) to complete the look of the set!

56 years old and my bedroom walls are covered with diecast vehicles. Hot Wheels were my go to toy as a kid. Now a trip to wal mart or any other store is a hunt for what's new. This is my drug of choice. Hot Wheels, or any other 1/64 scale vehicle that appeals to me. There is no chance for a mid life crisis because keeping your heart child like is a blessing. You can work until you drop, but finding a cool car in the toy isle makes you forget how hard you work and gives you a little spot of joy in the moment. I have too many to count but it's worth it because I will share that piece of joy with my grand children someday. If I had known as a child what my cars would be worth today, I would have had my parents buy extras and stored them away. Back in1972, my parents bought me 5 cars at 2.29 each from a local pharmacy for Christmas. One in particular was the White 68 Camaro with redline tires, and another was a pink Beach Bomb, Red Baron, Tri Baby, and Whip Creamer. They were all met by Mr. Hammer because crashed cars should have body damage... right? WHYYYYY! Oh well, I had fun regardless. I salute all who are my age and still retain the joy of childhood memories brought about by Hot Wheels Vehicles.

One thing that I've always loved about the track sets, going all the way back to the 70s when I was a kid, is that they taught me a lot about physics. Learning about the connection between the height of the starting gate, gravity and speed, how to overcome friction, the role of lubrication on the speed of the cars when applied to the axles, the role of inertia and mass and the laws of motion when setting up loops and curves, all of it is physics learned through playing some really cool toy cars.

    35. My first Hot Wheels was a white "Limozeen" from 1991 when I was 3. We found an original 16 Deora under the front porch when my grandpa passed. He used to drive his cars up and down the legs of the table that now sits in our living room. I've found a local club, Michiana Hot Wheelers club, that meets every month. It is freaking awesome to be a part of something. I've never been in club or been very social I spose, but Hot Wheels club is full of a bunch of awesome grown kids like myself, good to have something to look forward to. I've even made hot pepper jams and hot sauces to take to folks to trade! Good times. Hot Wheels 4 life lol.

Maybe the textured silver body was plastic instead of metal giving it a weight advantage? I'm also now super interested in how they designed the cars in the past before they had CAD software and 3-D printers for quick prototyping. I feel like they would have used clay models just like the real car industry.

I remember when hot wheels first came out. I was eight years old at the time and my older brother was 10. We have about half of the original 16. I think our cousin Dexter used to come over and steal one every time he came over. My brother finally gotwise to him and when he would go to his house, he would steal ours back!lol i’ve had three daughters and bought them all hot wheels when they were little and played with them together I remember saving my money as a kid and buying that big figure 8 set for sizzlers. My best friend, Billy Johnson had a fat track, and when I would go to his house, we would play on his track and when he would come to mine, we would play on the big figure 8.

I played with both Matchbox and Hot Wheels. And my sons played with them. And now my grandsons are now playing with them. And I am collecting more sports cars and rally. Than muscle now. I am waiting for Hot Wheels to come out with the 1971 Safari winning 240z. And 1974 Lancer.

I got some Hot Wheels from the 70's and 80's and the quality is 100X superior than the ones they make today, quality sure took a dip. We used to trash these things everywhere in the 80's, run them through every terrian outside and they held up, not so much today
