Master tapes can sometimes be found on eBay: goo.gl/weC9Cc
However often these are just the master that would have been used to dub across for a cassette release rather than the original master.
If you want to know more about the history of CTS studios - www.malonedigital.com/studios-...
The Heinz Soup Advertisement mentioned in the video can be found here: www.hatads.org.uk/catalogue/re...
If there's one thing people like to correct each other over more than soldering - it's the Beatles - so I should advise that if I have made any factual errors in this video they cannot now be corrected....trying to post a correction on a video is like shouting at traffic...the world just keeps on turning...as the comments scroll off the screen.
The various close up videos of the reel to reel were shot later just to have something to look at when the audio was playing...you'll notice the amount of tape on the reels bears no relationship to the audio segment being played (and the reels are moving at 7.5ips).
UPDATE_ there's no longer any need to translate the German advert...it's been done a number of times in the comments...and it's for a brand of cigarettes called Carlton.

The german part at 17:38 goes something like this: "Together. Together. Together. Enjoy Carlton together." "That's the new style we love." "Enjoy the rich and ripe, the likable, clear, full taste of Carlton" "Enjoy Carlton together, through joy of good taste."

Was about to translate but then my brain started working all of a sudden and i scrolled down to see if there wasn't a translation already. "Carlton" rings no bells in my mind, no idea what that could be. But i don't remember a product named "Karlten", which would sound phonetically similar but isn't a word or name i ever heard, not even as the name of a character from some show Will Smith did once...

I thought the same... and the thought occurred to me that it's possible they were doing that on purpose. I've done a few commercial recordings (as a studio musician) before, and it's quite common to have seasonal musical arrangements around the holidays. Even if only a slight hint of a certain Christmas song's vibe can be really important to the advertising agency's instructions. Pretty cool that we thought the same thing, though.

** Spoiler Alert ** This post does not contain any pedantry. Thank you Techmoan for your excellent work in producing such an interesting show. I'm a child of the sixties who pestered his parents at the age of about 8 to get me a Compact Cassette recorder. Much later in life I worked for the BBC for 25 years in Post Production. The quality of your ¼" transfer to digital is beyond professional standards. During my time at Auntie I worked on practically every film/tape/digital format from Nitrate 35mm film, 2" Quad to HD Digital formats. We share the same love of vintage formats. I was absolutely absorbed by this post. It finally made me get round to subscribing to your Patreon account. It seems like you produce this in your spare time. I hope that you will get enough patronage to go full time. Good luck and many, many thanks for your good work. Simon x x x

It's great to know that after all those years doing something as a job that you still find it interesting. Jobs have a habit of killing the fun in things. I used to be quite into computer games, and as a result got a job in the HMV games dept in 1992. All the time I worked there I never got a chance to play a single game even though I was surrounded by them. Back to tapes, I was surprised how well the 2 track recording was captured after playing on a 4-track machine, I was expecting to be missing a sliver of the sound due to the layout of the tracks, but if I did, it doesn't come across.

The German one is a commercial for Carlton cigarettes... I don't know about the UK, but when I was kid it was common to have glasses filled with cigarettes and cigars on the table at parties, like you do with a bowl peanuts. Here's my crappy attempt, my German is pretty rusty. "Miteinander Carlton genießen"... Enjoy Carlton Together. That is the new style that we love. The rich and ripe [taste], easy to inhale(?), The full flavour of enjoying Carlton together. Enjoying Carlton together, With a full and good flavour.

The song at 14:21-15:44 is stuck in my head. Absolutely amazing quality for an analog-to-digital conversion (especially when the 15 ips portions of this reel were ran at 7 1/2 ips). Also take note of many Heinz campaigns that have historical significance ("Beanz Meanz Heinz", "Heinz Soupaday", to name a few) and how Babycham landed in hot water by using "The Genuine Champagne Perry" instead of "The Genuine English Perry." We even have a radio spot for John Lennon's _Walls and Bridges_, as a hidden track on the master tape! You never know what you'll find. Thanks Techmoan! ;) Anyways, here's the lyrics to the co-op song: _Co-operation, co-operation_ _Could be working for you, uh-huh_ _Co-operation, servin' the nation_ _Why not let it serve you?_ _You can get everything from a pint of milk_ _To a holiday by the sea_ _A loaf of bread or a soup for ten_ _Everything's got the dividend_ _Co-operation, co-operation_ _Serves you in many ways_ _And as you grow up, you can bank on the co-op_ _To serve you the rest of your days_ _Well, it's clear to see that the co-op will be_ _Here, come rain or shine_ _You can be sure it's true, that's why I'm telling you_ _Sign on the dotted line, now you're a member_ _Co-operation, co-operation_ _Now it's working for you, uh-huh_ _When you shop at this sign, everything's goin' fine_ _That's the co-op for you, you own it_ _And it's working for you, uh-huh_

casualevils The BBC had a junking policy until 1993. That's right they were erasing and destroying video tapes right up into the early 90's. But as for Doctor Who - yea it's sad but it couldn't be helped. No one thought that 30...40...and 50 years later that their would be world wide interest in a children's show. According to the late Barry Lets, "To store one full season of BBC programing would've taken up the size of The Royal Albert Hall. Wasn't possible." And the 2 inch video tapes at the time cost £600 pounds sterling per 30 minute reel. That's why they were often erased right after broadcast. But by 1970 they knew the show was huge and they could have saved all the original 2 inch quad Pal 625 line video master tapes from. Doctor Who. Think about it - For The Daleks Master Plan (a fantastic 12 part story) all we have is Episodes: 2, 5, 10 and a 20 second clip that was cut. And no Marco Polo. At least all the Pertwees are in colour now on DVD.

Anvilshock sympathisch [angenehm; auch veraltet: mitfühlend, gleich gestimmt]congenially {adv} [pleasantly; sympathetically] The dictionary must be wrong then. In case of a cigarette, i think "angenehm" is very fitting. And to make it sound more like the german slogan, i translated it like that. It took a while to post, so after that i noticed some already posted translations, but they are pretty literal. The meaning is the same, but you can't read it in the same "beat".

Well, there's a pun in there, as well --- he says ON A SCALE OF YES TO NO, as in, ON A SCALE OF ONE TO TEN, so a "NINE" would mean, "very little", since it's almost to the TEN, as in, totally no. But the joke is that "NEIN" means "no" in German. :P

5 years ago I was living in Ashton-under-Lyne near Manchester (but I've recovered now) and across the road from the flats where I lived was Catalyst Productions. They did jingles, adverts etc. for radio and telly. Their business failed and they closed down and moved out. When they'd shifted most of their stuff out they hired a skip for what was left. One day I was making a cup of tea and staring out the window while I waited for the kettle and I saw what looked like 10" tape reel boxes. I was out of the flat and downstairs long before the kettle boiled! When I got to the skip, a guy was throwing something else in and I asked if it was o.k. to take the tapes. He said "Yeah, knock yerself out mate, they're no use to us now." I ended up with about a dozen full reels and about six part reels. I loaded one excitedly onto my Tascam four-track machine. Then the capstan belt broke so I still haven't a clue what's on them and I haven't got round to fixing the Tascam. The plan is to get the tape machine going again and digitise whatever's on the tapes if it's worth keeping. Thren I can wipe the tapes and use them again. There's probably nothing life-changing on the tapes but you never know...

@Techmoan. I really appreciate the amount of work and effort you put into the making of your programmes. They're very informative and fun to watch. As a broadcast technology professional, it does bring back memories. On the subject of CTS (at least I think it was CTS - could've been Abbey Road), there were a number of masters that were lost due to flooding. Some of John Barry's (seen in one of your pics from the recording of You Only Live Twice) much loved scores appear to have been lost. A great shame.

As a collector of early demo and master tapes I always am amazed by the amazing quality of a recording from 40 or 50 years ago. It is incredible how reel to reel tape manages to keep a constant quality throughout the years, with of course some additional background hiss in some cases. Great video with some fascinating recordings going all the way back to 1963. it's a great find.
