Before Iron Man, Jon Favreau had directed only 3 movies and some TV. Before Captain America: Winter Solider, the Russo Brothers had only directed television, and a couple of movies. Before Spider-Man Homecoming, Jon Watts had directed some TV and only a couple of movies. Before Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn had only directed 3 movies. Before Thor: The Dark World, Alan Taylor had only directed TV. Before the Avengers, Joss Whedon had only directed two films and various TV. Say what you want about the quality of any of these films, but hiring Nia DaCosta is a pretty normal Marvel move. She's just as qualified as anyone else.
