The Maruti Suzuki We Deserve…

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

There was a time we all HAD to have a Maruti Suzuki. Today? Everyone must have an opinion on it, but not necessarily a Maruti Suzuki car. How did the Indian market leader find itself on the back foot? Can it find its cool quotient again? The answers are not simple.

    When it comes to Maruti Suzuki, we have the following 2 options: 1) Either get a decently powerful car at the cost of safety. Eg: Swift(1.2 K series) , Baleno RS/Upcoming Fronx (with 1.0 L turbo petrol) . 2) Or get a safer car with a boring engine. Eg- Brezza/GV with the anaemic 1.5 NA engine. But you know what, I still expect from Maruti because they did the mistake sometime back when they launched the S-Cross with 1.6 MJD. I think we deserve more such cars from Maruti Suzuki.

    I think all the buyers who make decision based on crash test safety ratings should ask themselves do I drive at 60 - 65 kmph all the time ? because this is the speed at which crash tests are done. I think more attention should be given to active safety features which would prevent us from being in an accident in the first place rather than just relying on crash test which is a passive safety feature which I think would not be as effective as the crash test suggests since the speed at which mishaps happens are way above the speeds at which these crash tests are done.

    I guess then TATA, Renautl, Nissan have cracked the formula to produce a GNCAP 4/5⭐️ capable cars and offer at an entry level price point for the masses. In many aspects I feel Suzuki-Maruti is like Apple, they did revolutionary things in the past to which they still manage to milk it, update only when pressured (not by the customers), & expensive (Maruti-Suzuki still manages to sell at a higher price compared to competitors and their offerings in-terms of Technology/Steering/Material

    If improving a platform is an expensive then Suzuki should improve their driving dynamics to the level of Volkswagen or ford. I guess it doesn't cost them much but doing so would definitely gives better results as probability of crashes get minimise.

  • @motorinc

    It does cost. More importantly, as Kartikeya said it takes a lot of time to make significant changes to/fully refresh a platform. But we don’t believe there’s a dynamics issue across the Maruti range. They certainly don’t feel like the VW/Ford cars but there’s a gap between feelings and actual mechanical reality. But yes, MS can certainly do more.

    Intrigiung and thought provoking Kartikeya, good one. There is no straight answer to this. On one side having a family of 3-4 move from two to four wheels asap is the biggest jump in safety that will happen the moment they buy the Alto/S-Presso/wagonR on the other hand having the Swift/Baleno not performing on the safety front is also not done. I have a feeling, like you said, things will move slowly and 4-5 years is a reasonable time for that to happen. Having a holistic solution involving the manufacturers, government/MoRTH, dealers and customers would make things faster and better.

  • @motorinc

    @motorinc

    That last part is happening slowly for sure. The issue really is that the "not performing on the safety front" is more marketing/communication than real when you start digging. Could Maruti do better? Yes, for sure. Are they doing terrible things? We're not sure it's that bad

    Mr. Bhargava said that “We are making card which are safer than motorcycles”, thats what even you said and thats what Maruti still agrees what their cars are aimed at, so the point of making affordable cars still stands for Maruti. Building an image for more premium market leading cars would not make sense here since the target audience is different there. Safety tests need to be made standardised and mandatory. A top end Scorpio N with 6 airbags scores 5 stars while a Swift which Maruti hasn't sent to Global NCAP (good reason to assume it was the base model) scores 0. The new Brezza, the Grand Vitara not tested for the fear of scoring high while the Harrier and the Safari not tested for the fear of scoring low. All this manipulation needs to stop. Also, there's so much that contributes to safety than crash tests alone. The dynamic ability of the chassis (moose tests maybe?), emergency braking systems, driver lane departure alerts, driver drowsiness alerts, ABS, EBD and so much more. Weightage needs to be given to these crash avoidance technologies. Stuff that prevent cars from crashing in the first place.

  • @motorinc

    @motorinc

    Жыл бұрын

    Well the Indian safety tests - crash tests included - are standardised and mandatory. The global NCAP tests at a higher speed and this is being discussed in india in terms of raising our speed from 55 to 64 as well. In that sense, there’s no manipulation. Everything on sale in india is tested and sold after it’s passed the Indian tests.

  • @motorinc

    @motorinc

    Жыл бұрын

    Your point about crash avoidance equipment being crucial is absolutely spot on. One issue is that the weightage right now is at presence/absence rather than qualitative. Second is, the more we add as standard equipment the further the prices will rise.

  • @rdaroga

    @rdaroga

    Жыл бұрын

    Where can we get the Indian crash test results? Is it a binary pass or fail result for homologation purposes or do they give stars like Global NCAP does? More can be done to increase the visibility of these Indian tests and you guys can play a pivotal role there, no? Wrt crash avoidance technologies, it can be made mandatory for all manufacturers to offer them at the highest end model. Let the consumers decide as per their priority and wallet size. This includes motorcycles as well. Make optional dual channel ABS mandatory for all motorcycles and scooters, including EVs. Those who want it, can pay extra and have it.

  • @motorinc

    @motorinc

    @@motorinc This is going to be a long answer. See, first of all that is their USP, secondly Tata as a brand we know gives great product in every sector and thrives for excellence. Third is Jaguar and Land Rover DNA in Tata cars, collaboration between these companies. Fourth Tata sources its Steel from its own companies. Now looking at the mindset of us millennials, I can say about 50% of us will only buy safe cars, of them 30% also look for great build quality as well. Rest will gradually understand after some years. For example me and my friends all own a car. Despite me trying to help one of my friends decide which car to buy, safety and all that he ended up buying swift desire which by the way is neither safe nor has good build quality. Soon after in a small accident he realised whatever i had told him earlier about safety and build quality as just by getting hit by a van the front of swift was half destroyed, so the next time he buys a car he will have this in mind and would opt for a better built and safe car.

    This is a video I have been looking for. I always crtitcise Maruti Suzuki for poor safety. The heartect platform they have used for making smaller vehicles have lost the sense of solidity and feels very light. It is something I already know very well in cars like Alto, WagonR, S-Presso, Ertiga, XL6, Ignis, Baleno, Dzire which have grown up in size and overall feels practical, they have lost the solidity for efficiency, and I feel bad for those going for one and later realize these cars have lacklustre build quality. And it's shame they don't even send their cars to Global NCAP which I always trust on them. That agency has another way to crash test their cars by randomly selecting and purchasing it.

Background is light colour and you're wearing white color t shirt this looks weird, if you want to keep a minimal aesthetic it's great add a bit of contrast(maybe a light blue or pink t shirt) so that video pulls me in. it feels like I'm in heaven and I'm looking for Angels not a hairy dude there 😝 2. It got a bit confusing while you were explaining the testing controversy. 3. The editing with to many sharp edits it looks good a 1 or two times otherwise it distracts from what you're explaining. In short i like cars and bikes but i follow them here and there and i feel most people would be + -20% from my situation so with editing and writing if you could slow things a bit(maybe a 10-12 min video then) which you do in podcast where I'm looking for more 😅 Anyway i do enjoy your content and have learned a lot from you guys so keep up the great work!!

So its the PEOPLE who made it a hit as they felt it very appealing, the looks and the sophistication of engine etc. This response of the sales laid Maruti to get into the comfort zone thinking that nothing will come closer for decades. Eventually other brands took over and rest is history. (Same happened when kinetic Honda was launched which made the people go mad in the era of bajaj and LML scooters but it's a different story).

    I think it’s high time for Maruti-still Suzuki to get back in the race. They have delivered great cars in the past but currently their ability towards building strong and firm cars in India and for India is questionable. I really don’t get their logic of not sending their car for a Global NCap when all their rivals are enthusiastically sending to get not less than a 4 ⭐️ rating. Of course safety is the top priority for Indians too and why MSuzuki is not considering using high quality materials while building. Next comes all these flashy features which gets revamped every 3 years once. They have to change their philosophy to gain trust and thrive. As a company they have to invest in R&D to come up with new concepts and design rather than copying. We, Indians require a safe car not a tin with Flashy features.

    Hate is a big word, a strong one. I might hate Maruti's offering from safety perspective on paper. But the question is does that really matter. We are a price sensitive buyer's market and big companies have proven wrong time and time again over here, and that is also because most buyers dont have deep pockets. Maruti by giving people opportunity to live their dream and aspire even more deserves much more respect. What i think drives suzuki to do this is mostly to save weight, cut costs, increase fuel economy. Engines are optimised prioritising economy over everything. Implies lower comfortable sleeps. Hence, They assume more than average miles are racked up on roads sub par and low crusing speeds. Opinions?

  • @motorinc

    @motorinc

    We shouldn't be afraid of strong words. There's a reason they exist and they're powerful tools to drive change for the better. The wider perspective is very clear. However you un/safe you think an economy car (from any brand at all) is, it's still going to safer than a two-wheeler. And while the better off urbane citizen can (and should) demand better safety, the larger population's step up in safety is to escape the two-wheeler and get into a car. On the flip side, the accident data (2021, MoRTH) is clear. Indian drivers drive badly and the best accident is the one you never have... which will do more for safety than adding x airbags. However, adding airbags is easy, teaching people to drive is not. And that's why we are where we are. But we are moving, and forward.

    Maruti / Suzuki, or, whatever you want to call them, have the capability and resources to make their Indian Cars safer and yet have them priced properly, why they suffer from inertia, is something they can answer best; meanwhile a lot of first time and second time buyers, whom I know personally, have kept safety in mind and not visited any of those 2k sales points of the Japanese giant and instead gone to an Indian or Korean owned one. A three or four star safety rating irrespective of the NCAP test format, they got it from, is better than a zero star rated Indo-Japanese Tin Can. The Japanese have a serious issue, which their top brass has been handling with exceptionally irresponsible and borderline vulgar humourish statements about safety. KM think about it like this. Let's say a car is a matchbox with people inside, ok? When it is a crash, let's say the accident creates 100 units of energy that need to be dealt with, ok? You have a choice. Either the matchbox destroys itself taking as much of that energy as possible so that the people inside don't have the deal with it. Or the matchbox looks amazing but since it passed on the job of absorbing the energy, everyone inside the box had to deal with the crash forces and are therefore injured or dying. What's a preferable outcome? Do also remember that Global NCAP is not _mandatory_ so Maruti is well within their rights to send cars for testing or not. They _do_ meet the Indian crash test norms. Can Marutis be better? Yes of course. But them looking worse after an accident is _actually good for the people inside the car!_

Tata has proved that. A tiago or altroz is right at the same ballpark of swift/baleno. If they can score 4/5* why not marutis? Features also are more or less similar. And same goes for hyundai/kia. Why all the quick cuts and zoom ins? Anyway, the bar for Maruti to be 'cool' was ridiculously low back when it started selling cars here. Maruti = Majboori for anyone who wanted four wheel transportation that worked. That isn't so now and it is the market leader because of relaxed norms that allows it to sell a bunch of its cars. Their attempts to look cool through motorsport failed too because they couldn't hack it. When Mahindra beat them in the 2014 Desert Storm, they changed the regulations to stop the XUV 500 from competing in that year's Dakshin Dare. Then in the 2018 Desert Storm I had the immense pleasure to see every single Maruti entered car fail to make the finish. Finally when Mahindra came back to cross country rallying in the 2018 Dakshin Dare, they murdered Maruti who was trying to do damage control by barring the media from mentioning Mahindra in daily reports. After which Maruti promptly quit cross country rallying. Including sponsoring events where it tried its damdest to turn events into one make affairs. Is it any wonder that such a car company made the comments it did when the latest Swift failed the global NCAP tests? And lost its ability to inspire and excite?? When on earth did Maruti ever have that in the first place?? Being the only major car manufacturer doesn't automatically make you the coolest. They never were and most definitely aren't so now. Not even in a 'price sensitive market' (translation = cheap buyers) like India. I am sure Maruti will appreciate you handling them with kid gloves the way you did in this video.

    Even at 2x speed this feels slow. This guy talks slower than an entry level Maruti.

    Maruti has a reach and convince that takes years to build. Recent statements by their CXOs feel a little arrogant... They could have just said - yes safety is our concern and to make it available to the masses takes time (a new platform) instead of saying.. Ooo govt should do their part as well

    What we understood from that meeting was - safer roads and safer drivers are key to improving safety. They say that the 55kmph crash test standard that India follows is adequate for our conditions. And the 64kmph test will make cars more expensive for masses. What do you think?

    The video editing works the best if it was a visual masterpiece. But as an informative video, it distracts a lot and breaks the connect. Trying something new is always good, but sometimes you need to keep finding until you get something great. This is lacking.

    I don't understand this logic of comparing 2 wheeler buyers with Entry level car buyers Most of the 2 wheelers cost around 1 lakh on road and in India people buy it with finance Where as the cheapest car cost around no less than 4.5 lakh on road It is a real stupidity to assume people who buy a 2 wheeler on finance can afford an entry level car which is 4 to 5 time more expensive to buy and almost 30 to 40 times more expensive to operate (petrol + insurance + servicing) than a two wheeler This logic of 2 wheeler owners upgrading to a entry level 4 wheeler is a gimmick created by companies like Maruti Suzuki For most of the two wheeler owners in India owning a 4 wheeler is simply out of reach 2 wheeler owners can't just afford to multiply their budget for a entry level car And those very few can multiply their budget for a 5 lakh entry level car can also increase it by 50k for a safer option This whole idea of two wheeler owners upgrading to 4 wheeler is a total non sense

    Well at some point he will go from a two to a 4 wheeler right? The distance in between the two steps of that journey is what is really in question. Can it be made shorter? And if it’s longer - how much longer is okay? Hope that helps. What do you think Dhiraj?

    @@motorinc That's true But it is true for even a bicycle owner as well isn't it , he or she will grow one day and own a 2 wheeler and if the growth continues will own a 4 Wheeler in future But again we just can't consider them as potential buyer as yet (the upward income mobility is quite difficult in India) My personal opinion if somebody can save his way to own a entry level (unsafe) Maruti can also wait for couple of months/ take more loan and buy a good 4 star Tiago as well The reason I say so is look at the infrastructure that is being created We have roads which are world class (speed upto 120 kmph) allowing unsafe cars to ply on such highways is criminal Wrt to your point I think if we really want to promote car ownership then the govt should carve out a different segment of small cars with restricted specifications which should only b allowed in cities with limited speed (Ex. Kie cars in Japan )

    While the Kei car idea has great benefits… we don’t think it will work here until we can separate our status from the car at a very basic level. What we drive signals our status today and it’s part of the value equation. We’d have to be a lot richer and a lot more used to having cars around in the family for that to happen
