Clone Wars series is the best. Kids show at the start, but gradually it gets more dark and serious, I dare even say more dark than any of the movies, even original trilogy. It made Anakin a way more likeable character and all I see is Clone Wars series him whenever I see prequels. The Mandalorian feels like it could be animated and it'd feel a lot like Clone Wars' later storytelling, which makes sense cause Dave Filoni has his hands in both. I wish he'd had more a say in the movies.

Tyragon totally agree. It went places I did not see coming and yet were inevitable. So well written that way. And I thrust filloni and favro to do this right. So far it’s been the same sort of not seeing things coming that I liked about parts of clone wars and rebels.

Few things about Mandalorians. The main character is not a full on Mandalorian, atleast not yet. As he said he was a foundling, meaning he was brought up into the guild and not born into it (from what we got in this episode). He also doesnt have any insignia which means he is not a part of any Mandalorian Clan. Marketa smartly pointed out, that his armor looks like something he scrapped together which is completly true. Only members of a Clan especially if they join a family are rewarded with a Beskar armor pieces. It shows theire status, worth atc. When it comes to the Mando armor, they hardly ever create a beskar armor plates from new materials but melt down and reforge the armor plates of theire ancestors. The metal is soaked with the blood of theire enemies but also theire family. The armor connects them to theire past and protects them in theire future. The main character has to collect his beskar armor to prove to the remaining clans AND to Mandalore (the leader/ruller/king) of all Mandalorians. When he does and proves himself worthy he ''may'' be offered a member ship in some1s clan and become a part of theire family. And thus becoming an actually mandalorian. Beskar armor can re/deflect everything including a lightsaber. That is why the empire stole it all from the mandalorians durring the great purge. The empire smartly wanted to use it for theire soldiers.

Salacious crumb (Jabba's pet) was the last time you saw one in Ep VI - His shoulder pad was shot at the start, so he used the beskar to replace it - The ship (Razor Crest) is a model...not CGI - The Mythosaur is the symbol for Mandalore (as seen in the blacksmith scene)

Beskar is Mandalorian Iron and when properly forged, is one of the toughest metals in the galaxy. When used for body armor, not only can it withstand blaster fire, it can even take slashing or glancing blows from a lightsaber. In the old Expanded Universe, the Empire mined a lot of beskar from Mandalore, but was unable to do much with it since only Mandalorian armorsmiths knew how to forge it. Looks like they might be going for the same thing here. It's a huge part of Mandalorian society, as they make their armor from it, which is part of the reason they're known as such great warriors and could fight Jedi. That small bit of beskar he got was used to make his new pauldron, the shoulder armor we saw get forged. And the skull above the entrance to the armorer's room was a Mythosaur skull. Also in the old EU, Mandalorians weren't a race, but a culture, anyone could become a Mandalorian if adopted into a clan and followed their ways. Looks like they might have brought that aspect back too, as the foundlings could be orphans the Mandalorians found and raised as their own to help replenish their numbers and keep their culture going after the great purge they spoke of. Also, Jon Favreau is the showrunner and main writer, but he is not directing any of the episodes so far. Dave Filoni, Head of Animation at Lucasfilm, made his live-action directorial debut with this episode. He's considered George Lucas's Padawan and gave us The Clone Wars and Rebels.

Robert Spain for decades Star Wars has been such a mainstream classic, people know what it is before they even learn how to speak, and because of it some have become so accustomed to the mythology and it’s characters without having to watch the movies, therefore a lot of people never feel the need to watch the Star Wars movie, I am one of those people, it took me a long time to really sit down and watch the movies cuz at a point you don’t really feel like you need too y’know. We all know who Luke Skywalker is, we all know what “the force” is, we all know what a lightsaber is, we know Vader is Luke’s father, we know the chick wit the buns is Leia etc.

Beskar was known as "mandalorian iron", and was extremely rare - the only planet where you could find substantial quantites of it was Mandalore. To them it's more than just metal - the armor and weapons were not just highly resistant to damage as well as extremely sharp, but there was also a ceremonial aspect to it; The Mandalorians had a very martial culture. Pauldron is a type of shoulderguard.

If you wanted some extra bits from the episode, the land speeder scene shows the new model that replaced the older land speeder shown as the second option the Mandalorian chooses to get carried to his ship with his bounty. This scene brings back the dialogue from the original trilogy episode I in which Luke is forced to sell his land speeder and follow Obi Wan, which states that the model luke owns don't sell for much ever since the new model came out.

Here’s some info on some of the lore that y’all might’ve missed or not understand. Maybe y’all just misspoke, but this takes place between Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens. It’s a 30 year period that hasn’t been explored much except for in books and comics. The New Republic is still rebuilding and there are still remnants of the Empire lying low in the Outer Rim and the Unknown Regions (that’s where the First Order eventually comes from). Life Day, Mythosaur are references to the Holiday Special, which a majority of people hate but Favreau likes. The Director wasn’t Favreau, it was actually Dave Filoni, who is the head of Clone Wars and Rebels, and who is basically considered George Lucas’s apprentice as he worked under him for many years, and especially during Clone Wars. Both he and Favreau are the creatives behind the show. Also Yoda’s species and background hasn’t been explored because George Lucas wanted to keep it somewhat a mystery. We’ll see how much they explore in this series. When it comes to The Mandalorian’s past, his hatred for droids and traumatic upbringing are both linked as his family was probably killed during the Clone Wars. In the flashback scenes, you can see that the ones shooting at his family are Battle Droids. Also, He is a Foundling which means that he wasn’t necessarily born on Mandalore, but brought into their culture, basically being adopted into Mandalore. The Signet is a sign of who’s family you belong to. There are different Houses on Mandalore, so it’s somewhat the Game of Thrones concept of different old Families that rule different areas, all under a Monarch. They’re also a warrior people, and in different point of times have fought against Jedi (Old Republic) and against the Empire (during the events of Rebels, which takes place in between Episode 3 and 4). Some of the Mandalorian families we know in canon are House Vizla (in the Clone Wars tv show, Jon Favreau played the head of their house) and House Wren (which is the House and family of Sabine Wren, one of the main characters of the tv show Rebels). Dave Filoni was the head of both shows, and has been the one who has created of a lot of the canon lore for Mandalore and Mandalorians. The Great Purge could be a few different things, but it’s most likely the invasion of Amanda lore by the Empire, forcing them to lose their neutrality and sovereignty. Beskar is a metal that is used for Mandalorian armour. It’s considered one of then strongest metals in the universe, impervious to a lot of blasters and even lightsabers. It was a metal that belonged to Mandalore before the Empire took control of the planet, and took mined most of the metal. A pauldron isn’t a Star Wars term, it’s the name for the shoulder armour piece, in this case the one he made with the beskar metal. The Stormtroopers are most likely part of some Imperial Remnant on that planet, and one of their motivations for finding the baby yoda is the fact that the only members of his species that we’ve seen on screen have been force sensitive. Yoda and Yaddle were both on the Jedi Council during the Old Republic. That might explain why the scientist wants it alive (to study and experiment on it), and why the Imperial Official (played by Werner Herzog) is fine with killing it. Hopefully that helps fill y’all in on some interesting lore that might have a big impact on this show.

Oh gosh, people! You in for some Mandalorian culture drop right here, if you want to! Beskar is a special Mandalorian Metal which is so durable that it can withstand Lightsaber strikes. Most Mandos forge their armor (called „beskargam“, „iron skin“) out of it, as their long time ford, the Jedi, obviously use lightsabers. The metal is incredibly rare and only found on Mandalore and its moons, and only Mandalorian blacksmiths know how to craft it to bear that incredible durability. The term foundling is new to this show, but the Mandalorian tradition of adopting any orphans they encountered into their society and raising them as part of their clan has been well-documented. The family („aliit“ in Mandalorian tongue) is the most highly treasured piece in Mandalorian culture. Mandalorians do not care for your species, gender, skin color -if you adhere to their code , you are Mandalorian. The code is called Resol‘nare (six tenets of Mandalorian life) and is thousands of years old, developed before the great conflicts of the Old Republic more than 40.000 years before episode four. It consists of the following tenets: Wear the armor, speak the language (Mando‘a), defend yourself and your family, raise your children as Mandalorians, contribute to the Clan‘s welfare and when the Mand‘alor( the Mandalorian leader) calls upon the clans, rally to their cause. Mandalorian culture is Rich and fully developed in The expanded universe of Star Wars Literature. It’s worth your time, cause it’s more than just a warrior guild, it’s a unique and interesting take on what a culture of people who only care about what’s inside you instead of your appearance or former status may look like. Also fyi: a „pauldron“ is (obviously, now) a piece of armor protecting the shoulder. A mythosaur is an ancient, gigantic dragon-like creature which originated on Mandalore, which the Mandalorians soon hunted to extinction to prove their superiority in combat. Their skulls remain the most well-known symbol of Mandalorian culture. Even Boba Fett wore one on his amour. I hope you keep on watching the show, and maybe I enticed you to read novels such as Republic commando (GREAT books, really!) . Have fun, ner‘vode (brethren, sisters), oya manda!

We learned in this episode how (given their circumstances) important any small piece of beskar is to Mando's. The bounty would bring many (100?) times what he received as a down payment. And, we see how important it is to this Mando to live up to the Mandalorian tradition. Will he turn the infant over for the beskar? Will he turn down the bounty and save the infant? Or, will he try to save the infant AND try get the beskar?

The carbon-freezing chamber used on Han Solo in Cloud City was a crude facility not intended for people, not an early design still being researched. Carbon freezing has been around a long time (including to freeze people), so it makes sense that the Mandalorian could have a simple facility on his ship. Although the Empire has been formally defeated at this point, that doesn't stop parties within it to try to take the lead as hegemon in the galaxy. Chris's analogy to gangs is accurate but probably on a much larger scale. Pauldron and Signet aren't words unique to Star Wars. A shoulder pauldron is a piece of armor over the shoulder. It's what you see crafted and put on the mandalorian in the episode. A signet is a symbolic identifier, kinda like a family crest. The Mandalorian seems to be an orphan, and family history is very important to Mandalorian culture, so she was probably asking if he had found his heritage so she could put the family signet on the pauldron. That's my guess at least. Of course a lot of details in here are references to early Mandalorian storytelling, specifically the Holiday Special, which introduced Boba Fett as a Mandalorian (which was also new). The Mandalorian's weapon comes from the Holiday Special as well as the mythosoar. The Holiday Special also celebrated Life Day, which has occasionally been used non-canonically in video games. The thing you see roasting is a Kowakian Monkey-Lizard (first seen in Jabba's Palace in Return of the Jedi), probably the worst, most perversive creature in Star Wars. He probably deserved that death more than anyone will ever know.

  • @tehdipstick

Y’all missed out on Clone Wars. It’s is an amazing show and the Mandalorians are heavily featured. Mandalore used to be a very rich planets with medieval style Mandalorian warrior clans who ruled. Than they got replaced by a more pacifist government. There was a civil war and the Mandalorian warriors defeated the central government with help from Darth Maul. Mandalore was a neutral planet until there was a separatist invasion and the planet was freed by the Republic who than occupied it until it turned into an Empire which resulted in another Mandalorian civil war. This is about 8 years after the fall of the Empire and there have been only two recorded Yodas in canon before this.

Also the blue alien at the beginning was Horatio Sanz from Saturday Night Live. The uber driver on the ice was comedian Brian Poshern - Also Faverau wrote the story, but it was directed by Dave Feloni who did all of the Clone Wars cartoons and this is his first live action directing job. The Storm Troopers are now hired hands work mercenary jobs/bodyguards etc since the empire fell

That blue guy was Horatio Sanz from SNL. Also the ughnaught old guy that helps the mandalorian was voiced by Nick Nolte

MDM I don’t want to be that person, but no, it’s about the Empire taking all the Beskar. It doesn’t have to do with Order 66

A pauldron is a shoulder piece for armour...so that armour he acquired for his shoulder is the pauldron ya'll were wondering about. A signet I think is like a logo of some sort...or maybe a family crest or sigil, Yeah...im pretty sure thats it.

SURAJ AND MARKETA WERE SO DANG CUTE IN THIS REACTION!! This show is definitely going to be so dope! I hope the story gets really good and isn’t just fan service moments. BUT REGARDLESS JUST BASED ON VISUALS ALONG WITH IT NOT BEING OVERLY SERIOUS I THINK THIS IS A REALLY DOPE ACCOMPLISHMENT

Heavy references to the Holiday Special.. like : Life Day (star wars christmas) , the blurg are from the caravan of courage (ewok tv special) .. the disruptor rifle he uses is from the books (and holiday special).. and then the mandalorian culture of adopting orphans (foundlings)
