This film (and play) has so many screamingly funny lines that, even as you're taking one in, ten more are piling up behind it. A sensational cast, and a really unusual story, make this a one-of-a-kind viewing experience.

Kind of fascinating how the trailer paints this film as a romantic triangle between Davis, Sheridan and Travis. Yes, it's a plot point, but it's not the main plot of the film. (Brilliant film!)

I remember reading that the characters in this play were inspired by real people-Monty Wolsey's -Alexander Woollcott,Ann Sheridan's Gertrude Lawrence and Banjo's Harpo Marx.

The studio kind of created a whole new movie in the trailer, emphasizing the elements of Bette Davis and Ann Sheridan at the expense of the major character and his story, because Monty Woolley was a complete unknown to moviegoers at that point, and no one would come to the movie if they pushed him in the trailer.

Arguably better is the full-length version of the Nathan Lane revival of the play on Broadway in 2000. It’s definitely funnier than the movie. kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z3yGy6yzZq_Nkaw.html

although i love old movies & bette davis is my favorite golden age of hollywood star, & i usually like montys roles...i didnt enjoy this movie. monty played a rotten character who treated everyone badly. he was selfish & a sneak. bette's part seemed watered down & uninteresting. my favorite monty movie="since you went away" w/claudette colbert & its a wonderful xmas movie. favorite bette movie, if i have to choose...."all about eve" "now voyager" "the little foxes"...i couldnt do just one.
