The Man Who Came To Dinner (1942) - Insults Compilation

This is a compilation of the complete savage moments created by the character, Sheridan Whiteside played by Monty Woolley in the 1942 film, The Man Who Came to Dinner.
I love this film, I watch it every year during the holidays, and so I had to make a compilation of just how dope this dude is.

Monty Woolley, he was so eloquent even when he was ill tempered and each and every word so precise and buttery! While Bette Davis was developing character, in time she could hold a candle to Monty Woolley word for word and temper for temper.

My favourite Yuletide film - you can't help admiring people who are that rude and get away with it. My favourite lines are directed at Bette Davis: "Listen, repulsive..." and "This aging debutante, Mr. Jefferson I retain in my employ only because she is the sole support of her two-headed brother."

Believe it or not, Cary Grant was almost cast as Sheridan. Bette Davis wanted John Barrymore. Fortunately, they went with Monty Woolley.

Wow! That’s great trivia. I cannot imagine the movie with debonair and charming Grant playing the Whiteside character. Although after watching Penny Serenade (the most un-Cary Grant of Cary Grant movies), I would have enjoyed seeing him play characters with more range. C’est la vie!

He is based on a real persin, Alexander Wolcott, a member of the Algonquin Round Table in the '20s. The other members could be just as caustic. Banjo was based on Harpo Marx. He and Wolcott were good friends. Their cynicism is born from the horror of WWI. Gertrude Stein called them "The Lost Generation".

@@101Volts 🌿 I just watched this "compilation of insults" again and have come to the conclusion that most of the writers of the original "Frasier" series were big fans of these old movies. The insults that flew back and forth between Frasier and Niles, Lilith, Marty, Roz and Daphne were in the same style...as when an upset Niles waiting for a "much needed" Brandy asked how it was coming...by St. Bernard?!!
