And it's a terrible shame that those who still remember her still think she died from choking on a sandwhich, which wasn't true at all. I read that the rumor started only because a DJ or Newscaster had mentioned that a partially eaten sandwhich was on a plate on a nightstand beside her bed. But it wasn't the reason she died at all.

@@sidgysoho1960 this is what I have found from an interview that Michelle did about 7 yrs ago. It wasn’t any regular flute but an alto flute, which is larger than a regular flute and plays in a lower register. A jazz player named Bud Shank was brought to the session to play it. Michelle was homesick for Cali and John started writing it for her earlier in the week. They were in NYC as newlywed’s. She enjoyed visiting churches, and a few days before, she and John visited St. Patrick's Cathedral, which inspired the second verse ("Stopped into a church..."). John hated the verse, as he was turned off to churches by unpleasant memories of parochial school, but he couldn't think of anything better so he left it in. This is one of the few songs that Michelle was allowed any input in writing. Doug Thompson tells this story: Denny Doherty once told me that when they were recording that song, they wanted a solo, but didn't want the usual guitar solo. John Phillips walked out into the hall of the Hollywood recording studio they were at and Bud Shank was in that hallway as well. John grabbed him and brought him into the studio. Shank listened to the hole he was supposed to fill and nailed it on the first take. Check this site out. Lot’s of good facts on music. www.songfacts.com/facts/the-mamas-the-papas/california-dreamin

I recall seeing an interview with Michelle saying she was woken up in the middle of the night by John who was hyper from drugs he was on. They polished it off the next day and brought it to Sunset Sounds when they went out to record it, and the studio & musicians worked their magic. There was another wind player ( flutist ) who I saw credited on the Beach Boys studio footage and I thought it would have been him. Allan Greene comes to mind. I'm certain there was another player. But the documented credit is Bud so I'll take it. We've lost so much of the Wrecking Crew ! Very few songs can make you feel and this is definitely a great example. PAPA Denny's delivery is full of hope while still trying to convince someone else the grass will be greener elsewhere (California) while the haunting harmonies of Michelle, Cass and John almost warn us that this may all be fleeting or be careful what you wish for. Seeing in retrospect how fleeting Mama's and Pappas time together was and how it all ended makes this song hit even harder.
