The Making of Sonic Adventure | Jordan H.J.

Ойындар

The Making of Sonic Adventure is a retro gaming history documentary about the game development of Sonic Adventure by Jordan H J.
In the early nineties, SEGA was at their peak, they taking on Nintendo and had a goal of global dominance. By 1997, their plans had failed, and they was sliding into irrelevance. They had one last roll of the dice, the Sega Dreamcast. And for it to succeed, they had to bring their mascot back in proper fashion, and give the console a game which could change their fortunes, in this important moment in gaming history and game development. I'm Jordan H J and I make videos about gaming history.

I grew up playing and loving the trilogy through the Mega Collection for GameCube but I at least have a Genesis mini now with them all loaded up and I've got to say... Nothing like playing them on original hardware with a real controller, I get that sentiment way more now! But I digress anyway but I got a Dreamcast, this game and a few others for Christmas of 01 and man was I so friggin' stoked!! It aged poorly but hell yeah I couldn't of said it better myself, man! Same with SA2. Loved my SA2Battle tho!!

Sonic Adventure is one of my favourite Sonic games. It did what it set out to do and succeeded. I wouldn't say it's 3D Sonic at its best as I found Sonic Adventure 2 to be a lot more polished and refined but Adventure 1 is still a fantastic game. It hasn't aged entirely well but then again, most 3D games from the Late 90s haven't. Aside from Sonic Adventure, there are several I still go back to and have a blast like Super Mario 64, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (heavily underrated by the way) and Crash Bandicoot Warped but that's about it from what I can remember.

tbh, i much, MUCH prefer SA1. SA2 felt like a scam. 6 characters, mirror of each other making them no better than just a skin. and doing the same level in different order. Some level also felt much less open than SA1. Wich was a staple of Sonic game (even in 2D) the freedom of choice into how you want to progress through the level. The story was also bad. I think SA1 aged much better than SA2, because when i played SA 2 i was older but strongly disliked it. So i made some of my friend try SA1 to be sure it wasn't nostalgie and accute chaos cuteness syndrome. And yea: they all prefered SA1 due to how more varried it was, the hub, and the fact that they kept discovering new way to complete a level they though they new. I don't remmember ANY advantage SA2 had over the 1st.

@Ereder "SA2 felt like a scam." Something tells me this comment is gonna be nothing but whining. "6 characters, mirror of each other making them no better than just a skin. and doing the same level in different order." The only similarity the levels have is the aesthetics, the design is different for every level to provide a fresh playthrough every time with a sense of familiarity. Hilarious of you to say this, when the characters in the first game all share the same levels, and in the case of Tails usually boil down to lazy rehashing. SA2 has a theme of rivalry throughout the narrative, making your complaint about some characters mirroring each other extremely petty. Are you upset because it's a more streamlined game? Because honestly streamlining things was the right direction to go considering how unfocused and underdeveloped SA1's gameplay was. But I'm getting ahead of myself. "Some level also felt much less open than SA1. Wich was a staple of Sonic game (even in 2D) the freedom of choice into how you want to progress through the level." Lol, this is critically false. Sonic games generally have pathways from time to time, but all it got you was some extra rings and lives, and often said pathways varied in quality. The gameplay was still mostly linear. More importantly, SA1's gameplay is so easy that there's no compelling reason to explore, especially when you have a camera that proves to be a headache when doing something as simple as this. All the extra hidden stuff provides is an AHA! moment. You find them, and then you're done with them in a few seconds. If the game had something to encourage exploration, like maybe emblems for achieving 100%, then I can see the level design being utilised to its full potential. As it is though, they're fun to play but not exactly satisfying like collecting time relics in Crash Bandicoot 3. SA2's level design focuses more on tight obstacle challenges, which is for the best. 3D games are more time consuming to make than 2D games, and platforming games at heart are rhythm games. I've recently been playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, and the game's challenge factor of pressing a rhythm of buttons in quick succession to do sick tricks and combos reminds me heavily of SA2, a game about following a rhythm of buttons and doing them in quick succession in order to succeed and get A Ranks. Considering Sega games generally go for an arcade like structure of learning the ins and outs of the mechanics and getting better as a result, SA2 as such is successful in this area whereas SA1 kind of fails. It's an action-platformer, not an action-adventure. "The story was also bad." Ruby of Blue made a video that proves how wrong you are, so even if you actually bothered to elaborate on this it would be a waste of time. "I think SA1 aged much better than SA2, because when i played SA 2 i was older but strongly disliked it. So i made some of my friend try SA1 to be sure it wasn't nostalgie and accute chaos cuteness syndrome. And yea: they all prefered SA1 due to how more varried it was, the hub, and the fact that they kept discovering new way to complete a level they though they new. I don't remmember ANY advantage SA2 had over the 1st." This doesn't prove anything, and I wouldn't be surprised if you just made this up just to validate your opinion that SA1 has aged better, when fundamentally it hasn't. SA1 has worse collision, pace breaking design like the hubs and pointless fishing, underdeveloped gimmicks, and an often poor framerate. All areas SA2 is an objective improvement on, in addition to better textures, more refined character models, achieving 60 fps at all times, and overall doing a better job pushing the player into the game's systems. Yep, there was quite a bit of whining. Lol.

Truly an awesome video! It started a little slow, I was wondering if it was worth watching in the first couple minutes. But like Sonic Adventure, sitting through the old CG Cutscenes was totally worth it. The pace picked up and there was so much well-researched content in here! I also appreciate the classic footage. 10/10 months, keep up the great work.

I heard it was on PS3, so I turned it on and bought Sega Bass Fishing and Sonic Adventure on the PSN store last week. It was $3.99. Now, ironically I see this video on my recommended. This game was so revolutionary when it came out. It really is one of those sayings that is overused, but not here. And that is you had to be there to understand. Sonic Adventure is great memories. I still enjoy it.

Then there's the fur textures replaced with weird, shiny rubber like textures. Surprised you didn't mention the outer purple/blue bars in 2010/11 HD port as it didn't run in widescreen. the reason the lighting was different was not because of the attempt to target 60 frames (the 60fps was a natural result of the Gamecube being more powerful then the Dreamcast), it was because the original lighting engine was built into the Dreamcast and they had to make a new one for the Gamecube version, that's why so many dreamcast games were so dark looking. And the glitch factor people talk about in the that version is actually not true at all, what really happened was that different glitches were created because the SA1 engine was overall unstable due to the main game being a rush job.

I love Sonic adventure 1 I beat it for the first time since I was a kid recently and it was a lot of fun. I didn’t have a lot of issues with jank but I’m used to playing a lot of old 3D games so maybe I’m biased.

@@JordanHJ The main problems with them being ports of the GameCube one, is graphics and glitches. The GameCube version introduced noticably worse graphics, lighting, level models and added a bunch of gltiches to the game. Of course some of these changes were required to run well on the GameCube though. They got lazy, so every new port used the GameCube version, and somehow was worse every time they ported it. The PC version is the current worst version, but is fixable by using mods to make it loo more like the original Dreamcast experience.
