The Making of a Gaming Mouse: Inside Logitech's Labs
Ғылым және технология
We visit Logitech's development and testing labs in Lausanne, Switzerland to learn how PC gaming mice sensors work and the testing procedures engineers have invented to test for accuracy and consistency. There's even a machine whose sole job is to click mouse buttons over 20 million times to test for durability.

This was a very interesting video, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd watch more stuff like this.
I have the original mx518 that came out in 2005. First gaming mouse and software dedicated to it. It's 2013, and It has tanked my long sessions of CS 1.6, Starcraft, Dota 1 and now Dota 2. It still works as new after all those right clicks and never in these 8 years it gave me a single problem. Now THAT is how technology should be.
I love learning how stuff works! Thanks for the video :D

Yeah it was really cool
I bought a MX510 in 2004 and I still use it everyday for gaming in FPS like BF3 or TF2. I'm on the verge of buying the G500S for its clickwheel (that I love on my other Anywhere MX) but I still stick to my old mx510, because of its sentimental value and performance. So yeah, thank you Logitech, you never let me down. I'll keep advising people to buy from you.
I have a new respect for my G400,G9x & Deathadder now never thought so much went in to making them.
I love Logitech as a company, I've had wonderful results with their customer support.
really informative video. I hope you enjoyed your stay here in switzerland! :)
Please do more stuff like this! It's not obvious the amount of work engineers have to go through to make good products that look simple when looked at on a shelf. PS: Some info on the ergonomics of gaming mice would be great too, since you're already there. :) Go Norm!
GO Logitech! Thanks for sharing!
Yes that I can agree with. :) (Of course this puts pressure on the time they have scheduled. I know for a fact this event here at Logitech tested wasn't alone several other websites were invited to the factory tour and press conference. So they were probably allotted a couple of minutes to each guy they talked to. But I'm guessing. Still I agree with the idea, I would love to go more in-depth on certain things.)
Great content. Keep it up!
This was great thanks.
aww. if only i ahd this video many years ago. did a design and technology report on how they make computer mice. this would have been fantastic background story (finding out how computer mice are made, using only books, is hard as hell)
Where would one buy the sensor in the mouse, not the mouse, just the sensor. I can’t find one online so far
Tell me why logitech g25/27 wheel is too easy broken their optical encoder disk..its hard to find who sell this thing actually.
where can I buy that small black sensor ?? @4:07
As a reader, I'd love to see more videos like this one.
This is very useful for my potential custom mouse project

bro, i had the same idea
Whoa Logitech really works hard on their products!
This was a great video, I like Logitech's mice a lot and have been using a Logitech G3 for the past seven years or something. When it no longer does what I need it to I will switch to a new mouse:p But not until then.
This is men's true power, looking at these men talking with high-tecnical terminology about mouse engineering, from 2013, all this is fascinating.
I like the roller ball since my desk is sooooo small i need to use my knee as a mouse pad and my old logitech did not like that...or can the new logitech work without a mouse pad
thanks for idea
Logitech G9x? you can swap the most of the shell from wide for claw grips or thin for palm grip. There are also a few more adjustable mice but they can't do it instantly like the G9. The R.A.T 7 and 9 for example allow for adjustments but you have to fiddle with screws and stuff.
Great video.
Awesome video! Logitech 4 Life!
Is nice to see Tested.com in my country... welcome and enjoy Switzerland :)
This is why i love logitech.
Tell me why your g25/g27 wheels is too easy broken their optical encoder disk..its hard to find who sell this part actually.
Very interesting!
So I understand how with a mouse, there's a little camera in there taking pictures (or in these mice, sensors picking up light) in order to track the mouse's movement on a surface. But lets say that surface is completely smooth, and completely a solid color, like black? I'm very ignorant in this subject, can someone explain?
My favorite Logitech mouse is the RX1000 - I mean not necessarily for gaming, it's a great mouse for artwork, I can draw a 1 pixel high line across the screen with this thing - it's insanely accurate, recommended for anyone looking for a less twitchy non-gaming mouse. I have a £60 gaming mouse from Razer, and I'd still give that up before the RX1000, which cost about £6.
oui oui baguette
It would be awesome if they made a wireless version of Logitech G3. That was mouse was amazing!
love my G3 also,,6years n still clicking :p about to buy G100s now, i hope they have same dimensions
This is really cool. Do wacom next!
Good on Logitech for recycling that Steelseries mouse box for storage.
In my opinion Logitech has one of the best technical aspects and drivers, but it fails in the design / ergonomic aspects on the mouse. Also, once they release a design, it is very unlikely to change soon. If they think they achieved a good design, it will stay on the market unchanged for years and years.

I completely agree. I'd also say they are the most reliable gaming brand. You buy their product and you know it's going to last 4, 5 years (or more), unlike Razer's toys.
Wow, very interesting video.
I bought a 3DConnexion Cadmouse a few years ago, and the buttons were loose, making noise when I did shake the mouse (in the air). I sent it back, I expected more from a professional mouse.
Loved the video, but I have a question that maybe someone in the comments can answer. Why is it that the lens used are all plastic, none of which glass? I guess I'm assuming that glass could be more accurate, but I have no idea. Thanks.
Please, do something to block the mouse twist. When mouse do the twist move player can not understend the actualy mouse move and must look at a cursor to understend mouse tracking.
It would be fun if they just let them talk and fixed it in post to a bite sized interview for those who just want the 5min cliff notes and then release the whole interview for geeks like me who do love to watch 30 minutes on the design of the mouse button.
Yeah some places still have them. Just looked around. The Razer Ouroboros is a adjustable mouse as well. But is hard to find and stupid expensive right now as a result, sitting at $180USD O_o!
woah you guys come to switzerland and didn't tell me about it :( would may meet you :D
Did Logitech build sensor for them?
"Might have heard of this company". I have Logitech keyboard, mouse and webcam, and it's my favorite computer accessories brand.

I love the g500s :)
Logitech Razor and Steel Series. The only brands i trust for my gaming needs :)
9 years late but damn let the dudes finish talking 💀💀
uau cool... how about asking them permission so you could show us the other sectors, like the keyboard sector, the headphone/headset... controllers.. race wheels etcc would be AWESOME!
Damn it, Norm!
Best test for me is making a 1 pixel dot, zoom in and try to put the pointer on top of it a few times.
Logitech is in Lausanne Switzerland you say? Oh look, the Large Hadron Collider is just 60 km (40 miles) away. I wonder what the next video is going to be about :)
You guys should tell them to develop more trackball mice!!!
my thoughts exactly
Lol, I couldn't stop hearing the ticking clock of the camera man :P
Ah I see, so mice picks up irregularities on the surface and determines the movement, such as direction and speed by determining (lets say an irregular dot or pattern) moves past the sensor. So a solid black surface would be like shining a light into empty space, where you'd still see nothing.
Now there's a fix in firmware, you might want to check it out
this video gave me a hug nerd-on
I think he just gets excited during his interviews.
Could you give more info on the firmware or just link me to it? Thanks

cool
The gaming mice are brilliant; my MX518 is an extension of my right hand. But as a European, I can only buy the horrible UK keyboard layout for Logitech gaming keyboards. UK Layout has a slash key stuffed between the left shift and the z, which makes the left shift useless for its default sprinting function. I gotta use Razer gaming keyboards because Logitech refuses to sell US layout for gaming keyboards in Europe. It's like Logitech doesn't know about US-keyboard based standard game mapping.
You guys went to Switzerland... and didn't tell anyone in advance??? Well that's nice to everyone who literally lives 20 minutes away from Logitech's HQ.
i saw a steelseries packaging ~.~@12:01

That's the best way to put it...I got several mouse/head-set and even when they brake at the end I don't complain after been so cheap. New G502 was so cheap to adquire in my country and it has everything I needed, is not the perfect CS:GO but precision is great and does great job with the extra buttoms on every other game (including macros).

@@ThunderKat You're lucky then, G502 costs as much as a entry level/middle end smartphone where I live. It's almost the price of an entry headset.

I hate off-center sensors in mice. I like mine in the center. Usually just under the scroll wheel or more forward.
It's been released.
I really wish they would refresh the G9X.
It's because he knows that the person wont explain what they are talking about . An engineer wont always think to explain the exact kind of light in a mouse or what kind of lenses it goes through, Because he already knows why. Just like in Adams weathering video, they aren't trying to prove what they know, they getting him to EXPLAIN why.
No surface is completely smooth. The only limit is the sensitivity of the sensor.
the color doesn't matter, it's the smoothness that affects it.
oh this is where Norm went.
OATH to that brother ahah.
Would have been nice to get a word from the button design/layout people.
Razer naga. Now THAT'S a gaming mouse.
Right, gettin' all doe eyed float neck on em'.

Leave Norm alone!!!
Only a very good mouse will work on a smooth black surface. (I have experience with this problem.) Cheap mice won't work on solid black desks. It kind of sucks, as good mice are expensive, but less so than a new desk.
steelseries box at 12:00 haha
Unfortunately it is not manufactured in Swiss ;)
12.00 I see something from steelseries
Norm you're great just take it as constructive criticism
Please make a new G9
"...you might have heard of this company..." - Are you fucking serious?
Also, I destroyed my mx310 (which was more comfortable for my hand back then) in 2 years, playing dota 1.
cries in a4tech mouse
IT'S PRONOUCED LOWS-ANNE
All that research and still cannot fix the acceleration issue on the laser sensors.
