The Magic of Blackmagic Production Camera 4K from 2013!

Video sample shot in 4K CinemaDNG RAW. The lens used was the Canon 17-55 f2.8
I have mistakenly shot the video in ISO 800 missremebering that it was this cameras native iso where in reality it is ISO 400. No denoising was done, just a very quick and simple grade using DaVinci Resolve.

Diving into the past with this vintage gem! Despite the waves of time, this 2013 camera still captures the serene beauty of the seaside with remarkable clarity.

Thanks. I have seen your video already ;) It’s a remarkable camera. It can be quite limiting with the dynamic range and fixed noise pattern but when the light is right the image quality is outstanding.

Thanks a lot! They are so special. The image is superb out of the box. I did use a stabilised lens and shoot handheld.

I am learning to love the BM 2.5k. Would be happy to know your process. I love the look. Golden hour ? So nice. Badlands golden hour. What lens ?

The lens used here was the Canon 17-55 f2.8 IS. The look is quite simple to achieve. I used the Raw processing panel in Resolve to change the colour science to 4th gen and left it default colour space and gamut. After that in nodes I added a simple Kodak film simulation. There are many of them atound. There is a good one even built in into the resolve but the one I use is a set of 5 luts from Gamut.io. They are called Kinetic. I can’t recommend them enough. Choose the lut that suits the scene and adjust node opacity and voila!

"mistakenly shot the video in ISO 800" - this mistake allowed you to protect a little of highlights, otherwise it would be usual video with blown out highlights.

Bearing in mind this was shot in RAW and exposed for highlights I’m not sure how much of a difference this would make. You obviously loose highlight information while shooting with iso lower than native value ( unless highlight recovery does its magic) Shooting in higher iso has no benefit in this scenario as far as I can see. Anyhow I know how bad highlights can be it this camera if not kept under control. Thanks for watching.

@@LiveMyJourneyTom actually there is no difference in "ISO" setting. It only affects on how you expose the camera. So if you ETTR, then it's ok no matter what ISO was. Anyway on this camera ETTR is the only way to expose because highlights clipping is so bad, so noisy shadows is a tradeoff.

@MichaelWeizenfeld the dynamic range is not the best and the hi-light roll off is pretty bad. Still I’d say the overall image when properly exposed is very attractive. I prefer it to the BMCC 2.5K

@@MichaelWeizenfeld the colour is fine. Different but just as good. The biggest problems are the aliasing / moire and even larger crop of 2.4x

Not quite. The fixed noise pattern can be more visible when shooting at 800 while the same scene shot in 400 and over exposed by a stop is free of it.
