Photographers call the time between the sun setting and the stars rising the magic hour, and it is said to be the most beautiful time when red, gold, and blue colors spread across the sky. His words, “The most beautiful time before the stars rise,” were the inspiration for the title of this video. I got to know YCL and joined the club at the end of last year. I knew the names of great musicians, but I didn't usually listen to classical music, so I had to study a lot. First I had to figure out why Rach3 is difficult. (Please don't laugh) - cuz he seemed to play Rach3 without much effort. Following in the footsteps of all newbies, I started looking up his old videos, and this video is a trace of that study. I've been watching this again and thinking through the many hours of performances I have watched/or listened to featuring the modern day phenomenon that is Yunchan Lim in the past four years. Reading hundreds of comments and listening to interviews and reviews has allowed me to conclude that his enormous appeal arises from his incredible emotional and musical intelligence quotas. They are part of his genius and his motor and technical skills and dedicated interest and hard work add to that. He uses these abilities to a greater extent than many musicians, and he himself accredits his results to the compositions written by many very great musicians. In the music he plays he finds and explores not only the notes and directions inserted, but he follows and extrapolates the full gamut of their imaginations, human experiences and soul journeys revealed in their music by these great artists. He doesn't need to be an old soul, an alien being, or possessed. He just has to be himself and use his universe-gifted talents to lead us along with him on his journeys. I am aboard for as many of these as I can find. I love his humility and his stated appreciation of his family, teacher and friends. Thank you Yunchan, and Musik, Musik. 🌳🌳🌳🌲🌲🌲🌳🌳🌳.

I also don't like excerpting his music. All of his performances are truly worth listening to, no matter what age he was playing them at. For example, the Sinfonias he played when he was 15 is truly beautiful. There are some performances not included here, so I made a playlist. The reason for making this video was not only to show a montage of his musical journey, but also to show his past performances to more people.

Beautiful! Though you "didn't usually listen to classical music", the sound editing is seamless, both across different concerts and within the same piece at the end. Bravo!

After you listened to Liszt's Transcendental Etudes at the Van Cliburn Competition, the first thought is complete disbelief, then something along the lines of "why should anyone even play piano anymore?!". I'm old enough and usually the last one to make big proclamations (nowadays, everybody with a piano and fingers seems to be a genius!), but Lim has arrived - and has claimed the title of greatest living pianist. I can only imagine what he will do in the decades to come.

YCL is a precious gift to mankind. Thank you for the video~

오늘은 특별한 강의군요. 1990-1994년까지 실리콘벨리에서 주재원 생활하다가 한국으로 돌아오며 10학년인 큰딸을 목사님댁에 남겨놓고 한달의 1000불 수고비를 드렸습니다. 대학가서 기숙사들어 갈때까지...그때 목사님댁에 있었을때 힘들다는 얘기를 많이한 기억이 나네요. 아들도 2004년 10학년때 다시 미국으로 유학보내고...혼자 잘 살아냈습니다.오늘 강의들으며 옛날 생각이 많이 났네요.
