I never thought I would see better pianist at the Cliburn than Alexi Sultanov but I sure have. This young man is so talented. performing all 12 Liszt Trancendental Etudes in the semi final round is incredible. BRAVO UNCHAN LIM!!!!

Yunchan is the best today . Heavenly. Great interpretation.

An 18-year old playing all transcendental is already a miracle. However the force that he brought into his playing made it truly a transcendental experience!

He deserve to be in the final! We must hear more from him!

Historically, there have been several pianists who were called 'The Second Coming of Liszt'. But there are only two pianists truly worthy of such a title, namely Gyorgy Cziffra and Lazar Berman. Yunchan Lim's performance of these etudes at this competition is a historical masterpiece comparable to Lazar Berman's famous 1959 recording and they were even performed live! Better than Trofonov's, better than Berezovsky's.

After witnessing this brilliant performance, I'd say Liszt was "The First Coming of Yunchan!"

Yunchan Lim is not only technically superhuman, but also musically!

Bravissimo!!! YUNCHAN LIM has technique, musicality, showmanship, stamina, and youth. Initially, I was worried about his choice for his semifinal program, but he pulled it off superbly.

I was amazed at the ability shown here by Yunchan with these horrifically demanding works. He pulled out the really beautiful music (often not heard) from the scrambling avalanche of technicalities skilfully. Unsurprisingly, lots of sweat shed but no blood or tears here. Well done Y.! And so very enjoyable, thank you. No Limiting this Lim!!!

Actually, I think he brings out the too often hidden music as well as the expected and obvious technicalities in them.

Yun chan is a great genius!

I am absolutely blown away at Yunchan Lim’s performance. His technique is sublime, his dynamic range and contrast is expansive, he looks and sounds so effortless. Truly a TRANSCENDENTAL recital 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

It takes guts to do all 12 TEs in a row in a recital, let a lone a competition. And then Yunchan gives such a fantastic performance. This kid's going places.

클래식애호가로써 진짜 임윤찬씨 연주는 그냥 넋을 잃고 보게 되네요. 연주들으면서 이렇게 희열느끼는건 처음이에요. 다른 피아니스트들과 차원이 달라요. 콩쿠르수준이 아니네요. 보통, 열정적인 연주를 하면 음을 뭉개든가 하던데, 테크닉적으로도 이리 완벽하다니.....그냥 자유자재로 너무 편하게 치시네요. 피아노계의 김연아같은 느낌이랄까... 좀더 큰규모의 콩쿠르에도 나가서 다른 오케스트라와도 연주하는걸 봤음좋겠네요. 유럽음악당이 음향은 사실 더 좋긴하던데

i really like this yunchan lim guy. his forte has real power behind it, and his interpretations are so well put together, with none of the extraneous rubato i hear so often from competition contestants; every choice feels meaningful. looking forward to seeing how he matures in the future

I used to wonder, where are all the Chopin’s, Beethoven’s and Mozart’s, today. He has so much passion I do hope he starts to compose and I live to hear it. His love for the music and not the fame, says it all.

Look at his face at the end of the performance...right after that when the Anderson and Roe duo interviewed him to ask how he was feeling, he said he felt good. Yeah, because he succeeded in his mission to share the music in his head with the audience.

As an Infectious Disease specialist, I was deeply wounded during the COVID pandemic. I have very recently retired and listening to Yunchan’s music brings me so much healing . Ricordanza speaks to me.

He is unicum in music world, virtuoso, perfectly and thin feeling the essence of music. As to his technique of performance - it's above every praise. Well, well.

A level of perfection and musical understanding close to that of Richter, and Yunchan Lim was born on March 20, Richter's birthday :)

I have been listening to Yun Chan for months now. In MHO, he is the most clear, magnificent story teller possible! He is one with the music and he is a “Pipe Piper” and he takes us along in his Journey to deep inside ourselves!

For the 18 yo Lim, a truly mind boggling display of technique, artistry and endurance. If he don’t advance to the finals, I will be shocked!

Peter czornyj (one of the artistic directors) was so impressed with Lim, that he remembered and named all of Lim’s performances from the preliminary to his Transcendental etudes. He said this in the discussion during the intermission. Imagine having the technique to play anything, with the rest of your life ahead of you.

@@annettefallon1652 I'm not entirely surprised. His playing is something special, and one can hear it immediately. It's not about technique, even though his is stunning, but his ability to marshall it for purely musical ends. I've heard things in his Transcendentals I've never heard before, literally.

Lim was extremely impressive both technically and musically especially with the Liszt performance which was probably the best performance ever heard by an 18 year old pianist!! Spellbound pianism in every way!!

All players finished and everyone knows who will be the gold medslist. That is Yunchan Lim. If not, I will forget this competition in my life.

I bet Liszt Ferenc could not be more impressed, jealous and proud at the same time of Lim Yunchan acing his transcendental etudes, wherever he is watching.

I hope that Yunchan Lim will do some composing, if he hasn't already.

He did some composing when he was younger but it seems like he's not confident about composing yet. According to a recent interview, his composition teacher told him that a pianist should be able to compose, so he wants to compose if he can. He studied music composition for 2 years.

네 저는 이연주를 다보고 듣고나서 윤찬씨가 온몸이 다 태워져서 영혼이 천상으로 가는줄알았어요 헌신을 넘어서는 목숨까지도 바치는듯한 느낌이 들어서 듣기만했는데도 저도 전원꺼지는느낌

임윤찬님 땀 닦을 때 마다 , 이 시간을 위해 연습하며 흘렸을 수 많은 땀들이 함께 보여 더욱 찡하고 감동스럽습니다. 이런 귀한 연주를 보게 되어 영광이에요

18살이 이렇게 멋져도 되는 겁니까… 임윤찬군도 아름답고, 곡도 아름답고, 리스트도 아름답네요… 정말 일생이 느껴지는.. 몇일째, 몇번째 이 연주를 보고 있는건지 정말 감동이예요..!!!

I saw Yunchan perform this live today, and all I can say is.....it did not feel real. It was inhuman. If he doesn't medal, then idk who will.

In bwetween etudes, YunChan smiles...It makes my mind calm and happy. It is a bold choice to play Liszt 12 TEs in semi-final but he made it! I saw his Rachmaninoff piano concerto no. 3 in Seoul last month, it was the heaven. I believe he will prove himself this time at Van Cliburn. Go for him!!

인간의 한계는 어디까지일까? 얼만큼쯤 노력하면 이런 연주를 할 수 있는 것 일까? 그저 감탄과 경이로움만 느껴진다. 윤찬 림! 아름다운 청년... 늘 건강하고 좋은 연주로 많은 사람들에게 사랑받으며 행복 하길, 신의 축복이 가득 하기를~~♡♡♡

He is a genius. Just working and practicing isn't enough. An ordinary person practicing 100 hours a day won't get them there so it's no use talking about human limits.

처음엔 어려웠는데 들으면 들을수록 빠져드네요. (그냥 감탄 만이 남는다는), 깔끔한 인사 뒤 폭풍 처럼 카리스마에 무대 위에선 상남자 스타일 이시네요. ㅎㅎ

다른 영상을 보니 연주 후 일어설 때 비틀거렸고, 백스테지에서는 완전히 탈진 된 상태로 뻗었더라구요 ㅠ 이런 연주를 콩구르 대회에서 듣는거 자체로 관중들도 복이고 클라이번 대회는 유명세를 더 탈겁니다

개속개속 반복해서 듣게된다. 너무 아름답다.

들어도 들어도 좋다.

그의 얼굴에서 흐르는 땀을 투명한 유리병에 모아 간직하고 싶으다~~~ 윤찬 피아니스트의 내면은 음악을 사랑하고 작곡가를 존경하는 마음으로 힘이 갈수록 세져서 그의 연주에서 특별한 희열과 감흥을 느낄 수 있다. 그의 땀방울이 그래서 더욱 귀하다. 한 예술가로서 맑고 아름다워 더 빛을 발하고 영롱하여 눈부시다~ 그가 외우다시피 본 단테의 신곡을 읽으며 그가 출전했던 윤이상콩쿠르에 한국의 위대한 음악가 윤이상의 책을 찾아보고 있다. 나의 일상이 그의 음악세계를 알고나서부터 의미있는 연두빛 새싹이 자라나기 시작했다. 반클라이번 안에서 자유롭게 아름답게 그의 노래를 즐기며 그와 함께 그 큰 클래식의 세상으로 나아가고 있다. 곧 부산에서 있을 그의 스승 손민수교수님의 연주회도 기대하며 오늘도 행복을 만끽하고 있다. The Cliburn Orchestra seemed to have a terribly hard time during the competition, I think. They have to play many concertos of many composers whereas the Chopin Competition orchestra only plays Chopin Concerto No1 and No2.

What he said was "People doesn't... RARELY", to mean that the 'people only rarely play this piece' (his English is not so good - but OKAY!^^). He didn't say "clearly".

His English it 1000,000K times better than my Korean. Glad you pointed this out though. I absolutely got and agree with his message. He was talking about Mozart against Bach's music? Bach's Goldberg variations do exactly what Y says they do. That clip could have done with some editing. Yunchan's teacher Minsoo Sohn plays the Variations beautifully. I look forward to Yunchan's version eventuating.

리스트는 요즘식으로 표현하자면, 관종이 심한 아이돌입니다 평민으로 태어나 화려하고 현학스러운 귀족사회에 대한 끊임없는 갈망도 심했구요 리스트 공연 기록 중에는 연주 도중에 쇼도 많아서 관람표가 늘 매진이었대요 (광기어린 연주 중 기절하기, 이상한 무대의상 등 키도 185센티에 인물도 좋았으니 귀족여성들에게 인기 짱이었죠) 리스트 곡들이 어렵고 이 초절기교 작곡도 리스트의 허세스런 현학적인 작곡 의도가 들어있다고 봅니다 그럼 이를 연주하는 연주자들은 리스트의 작곡 의도를 어찌 해석하느냐에 따라 달라질듯요 리스트만이 칠 수 있는 곡이라했던 슈만의 말이 사실이라면 연주가들이 이 연습곡을 무대에 잘 올리지 않는 이유가 있겠죠 반클라이브 콩쿠르에 이 연습곡을 가져와서 관중들과 공유했다는 사실만으로도 윤찬군 배짱이 대단합니다 앞으로 이 연습곡을 어찌 다듬어갈지도 궁금하나 이 끊어치는 연주도 듣기 좋습니다 왠지 거친 느낌이 리스트의 광기가 느껴진다고나 할까요?
