For anyone reading this in the future - watch for engine oil wicking up the stator wires and causing connection issues at the white connector if that makes sense. I’ve seen it on my 999 and a 996. You will see oil drips on your garage floor and strange running voltage fluctuations on your dash while riding.

After having similar problems on several bikes over the years, this was a great fault finding process. It would be easy, with the magic of editing to make yourself look like an expert but, you are honest and struggle with electric as most of us do. Thank you.

I'm currently rebuilding a 999, I laughed out loud when you discovered the interesting packaging of the battery box. Although I almost lost my mind when I was doing my mine! I'm surprised more of these don't end up loaded in a trebuchet and placed gently at the bottom of a very deep lake! Thanks for the entertainment, nothing better than sharing the misery!

I had a very similar issue with my old SRAD (and very common on most Suzukis I believe) did all the same checked as you did and getting all the correct results from the stator I could not stop it destroying reg/rec, even a mosfet unit, and after talking to a nice man at Electrex World we concluded the earth from the battery to the engine was probably at fault. Bought a new earth lead from Suzuki all was good again. The old earth lead looked ok but I thought I’ll open up the crimped connections, they were greener than a leprechauns tunic but from the outside looked good. Lesson learned

What you were measuring on the rectifier were Ohms, not volts or amps, but the results were as they should be - as far as ohms go, half an ohm shows that resistance is futile 🙂 Nice job on using a MOSFET unit - well worth the extra ton, I'd say. They seem to clamp the magic in place more securely.

My first "proper" bike was a Ducati 748SP (not new) Just 5 miles from the dealership I noticed the throttle response had gone,. I coasted to a petrol station just in time to see blue smoke coming out of the fairing.... The RegRec had given up the ghost, and the entire wiring loom melted into a birds nest of plastic and copper wiring.... I never quite trusted the bike after that and sensed it was so unimpressed with my riding skills, it had decided to kill me, one way or other.

Having reached a ‘certain age’, life’s for living etc and decided that a) I need to get my bike license and b) when the time is right, I’d like to buy a Ducati (even narrowing down to the 749 specifically) I stumbled across your channel and have loved watching these vids as you ‘recommission’ this 749. I couldn’t believe it when I then saw in this vid that you took your bike to B&B in Lincoln and then found your Lincoln based too (we’re out near Saxilby. Really hoping that you get to enjoying riding your 749 and I hope to this year be in the position having saved pennies/sold kidneys etc to hopefully buy a 749 too….even if I have to just stare at it whilst I go through the learning journey.. I hadn't and still haven't ridden it.. but I did do my research and all the questions I had were answered in the add. I didn't realise ducati had so many variations with frames. I bought mine as an s from a guy who bought from a dealer without ohlins.. as anyone ever heard of that. Its an 06 . Red frame. Anyway thanks for the video. Probably has "Chinese" fairing kit...which means it might have been dumped, had a tip-over as Ducati fairngs are insanely expensive. "FILA" should have Ohlins, not Showa fork Shock or Sachs shock... do a VIN check.... Ducati did two special liveries "FILA" and "Parts Unlimited" "FILAS" came on the 999R sand cast case 999CC carbon everything.. So probably had fairing kit installed, which doesn't mean it's a bad buy at all. Make sure your starting electrical system is always behaving perfectly, well charged as in Dave video ..otherwise the starter clutch / sprag will wear out.. ABout $800 parts / labor

Don't use copper grease. It's slightly conductive so if it melts or runs because of heat it could cause a short circuit. If you're going to use any grease on electrical connections it should be special-purpose dielectric grease. It's not bloody cheap though. I bought a tube of it recently and it cost me about 15 quid. It's going in all the 748's connector blocks/boots.

A 'donut' amp meter is also a great tool to diagnose electrical issues., starter draw. Add a Motolectric HICAP battery cable upgrade. Have to piggyback cause you'll never be able to pull the cable thru the battery holder if your try and remove OEM battery cables you'll hack it up... pickup a Ricks Hi-torque starter, especially if your running an overbore kit, HC Pistal pistons @ 13.5:1. A QUALITY battery cable upgrade works wonders with the Ducati starting system "Sprag Saver" ! installing a new starter clutch is no fun ..
