Should I buy a cheap Ducati? Part 10. Are we nearly there yet?
As the rebuild of the cheap Ducati comes to an end Dave talks you through a few final jobs and then tots up the total build cost, and has a muse about how nice it'd be to actually ride the bike!

Hi Dave, I wish if you can help? I want do the same upgrade with the stand and neutral but I missing one information, what king of Diode did you use, can you give me the serial? Cheers.
Great series, thanks for taking the time out to film it.... 👍
You’re a bad influence - just shoe horned a 2006 Tuono R into the garage and now scrolling eBay for a classic Duc :-( ...... addictive watching Dave, thanks 👍
It's like watching a nerdy top gear, love it 😆
Just rewatched this 2 years later on , obviously enjoyed it until the end when you wanted to ride it but couldnt because of lockdown...looking back how mugged off were we ! Luckily for me my job was essential so i could rip the arse out of my bike on a daily ...traffic free basis
I’ve just watched this series back to back and thoroughly enjoyed every episode, so thank you very much! It’s hard to find decent in-depth videos on these wonderful machines, and hope you get to ride it soon. Well done!!
Really enjoyed this series...very well done
you say your not an expert on electrics but I disagree ! your a champion , as you would say Keep Cracking
Excellent series. Thanks.
Nice series, well presented and very informative, I'm buying one and now I'm not scared about the belts.
I replaced the rear brake mechanical switch with a hydraulic one. Works a treat. Make sure to get the one with a M10 x 1.0 thread. I also changed the rear taillight assembly with an LED one - cheap, easy to retrofit and bright. The thermo switch is the same as one for a - can't remember though can look it up, but is a European car. Much cheaper and more readily available than a 'genuine' Ducati one. Something to note is the fuel reserve sensor is notoriously flaky so mine is intermittent and mostly I ignore it. Just reset your odometer at a full tank and bank on getting 160km out of a tank before running out. Don't do that. I can tell you pushing a 748 1km up a hill is almost beyond your average 67 year old.
I was always baffled why so many Ducati owners had such low mileage bikes. After watching your videos I now understand why. I bought my '01 Triumph 995i Speed Triple with 6,000miles in Jan. 2016. This Triumph was a poor mans answer, looks wise, to the Ducati 748 that I lusted for!!! By Jan. 2021 I had put 45,000miles on her. If I had bought a Ducati 748 I would have had to spend many Thousands for service work as I am not a skilled MC Mechanic like yourself. Doing a major service on my Triumph Speed Triple was the most I was capable of doing.
A labor of love for sure
Wonderful series.
Great series.
A great watch, learned a lot. Cheers Dave for an enjoyable series of vids.
Loved it 👍
Nice job! 😃
Thank you I enjoyed all of this it was interesting and entertaining
Great vid Dave 👍🏻😎
This is great! Hope you can help me in the parts details like belts, gasket and other replacement parts
I noticed you have not got an ignition light when you switch on the ignition, when this happened on my 916 the voltage regulator had packed in, a common problem with these bikes. Might be worth a check. Thanks for the videos, it’s been thoroughly enjoyable.
Really enjoyed the series Dave, owned one from new back in the day, and although they're not the fastest going around, they can really hold their own. Case in point, I took mine to Phillip Island for a 2 day track session. As you do, we all gathered at the local pub the night before, exchanged idea's on how to approach the track, and obviously reveal what we were all riding. Whenever I mentioned the 748, the usual comments came out, that she over weight and underpowered, which isn't a lie, but I knew something that maybe they didn't, I knew how well she handled. Fast forward to the end of day 1, we're all back at the pub, with all of those nay sayers muttering the same words "geez mate, you get around all right on that 748". At the end of day 2, out of 40 riders, which included the usual suspects on R1's etc, I was 5th quickest, having a best time of 1:51. I know the time isn't quick compared to others who came before me, and others in more recent times, but I gotta say I was more than happy throwing my leg over the 748 and putting in some decent laps, and gave those who doubted her abilities something to think about. Horsepower is awesome, but unless your a track day warrior and are putting in the time week in week out, a bike like the 748 makes perfect sense. Subbed P.S. just watched your test ride/review, and you nailed it, the turn in and mid corner stability is absolutely brilliant, very confidence inspiring, maybe even more so on the track. Sure, those litre bikes would blow by me down the straight, but when they're struggling to put all that horsepower to the ground, out of say turn 2, I was just looking for the apex and nailing it. Come Lukey Heights, I'd have passed most of them back, so definately a fun bike to ride at speed, no doubts about it.
I owned the same model once. Bought it cheap on ebay the same way you did. This bike is marvelous. I should never have sold it. Thanks for the videos.
Very enjoyable series.. cheers
Really enjoyed the build shows when you know what you're doing and take it steady you can get a nice ride able bike. Enjoy 🏍
Excellent outcome mate. Once again just want to reiterate how much I’ve enjoyed this series. It was a nice balance of detail without little to too much information. I really hope you can continue with another project as you’re actually quite easy to watch. Plus it’ll be cool to see this on the ride and get your perspective. Stay safe
This was great to watch, your attention to detail is good. Thanks for sharing 👍
Hope you continue to do bikes like this really interesting content and lots off helpful information.
Love the bike good refresh series !
What a great build Dave. Looking forward to the other videos you'll be doing on it. Thanks for keeping us entertained during these times 👍🏻
Hi Dave, I loved the whole series. Great job, love the bike! Thanks !
That was a brilliant series to watch Dave, thank you. I don't have a great understanding of the inner workings of my bike and I found this really insightful.
Brilliant results. You could easily keep it a couple of years, ride it often and still get back what you have put into it. I only subscribed at the start of this Ducati but I'm looking forward to the next project..! Stay safe .
Enjoyed this series, great job! Dads just got a 748 and these videos have been a great help 👍🏻
Brilliant series, fascinating to watch
Just stumbled upon your channel a few days back and have so far gotten through the big ugly and Ducati projects- really enjoyed them and with plenty more to get through should keep me going for a while. Keep up the good work 👍
Great stuff ! Binged the whole thing. Great job in the end. My problem is if I bought this I couldn’t do all that but I enjoyed watching you sort it out. 🤘🏻
Very enjoyable series; I love Ducati’s so it was really interesting. Thanks for posting.
Bit gutted it’s finished. Really enjoyed this series
Great videos, always interesting to watch an professional at work on a project they love. Thanks 👍
Great series buddy. I’m kind of gutted it’s come to an end.
Awesome work Dave! I just watched the whole series. I took the plunge about 3 weeks ago and bought an 03 S4r which needs some TLC. You’ve put me at ease that I’ve done a good thing! Really enjoyed the videos and have subbed!
Really enjoyed this series Dave. I've wanted a yellow 748 for years! This one turned out fantastic! I wish I had the time and the skills.
Great Series! Hope you can manage to get your hands on another project
Really enjoyed the series and has helped get through lock down! I have 2 748s and have learnt a lot more about them after watching these videos. Would be great to see a video on an MV next. Keep up the good work
Hi Dave. I've just watched the whole series from start to finish and absolutely loved it. I marvel at your engineering skills, amazing. Really envy you. Keep it coming....
Really enjoyed this series , very nicely presented 👍🙂
Thanks buddy. Really nicely done, and no grease on my hands. Love the 748. Hope you get to ride it soon. Cheers from Canada.
nicely done
Really enjoyed this series. It is relatable as a long time Ducati owner, and someone who is in the middle of a build that will hopefully take me to World Ducati Week in 2021. The only downside is that you left us hanging on the cheesecake recipe ;-)
Thanks for an interesting series on doing up a bike properly. It always amazes me how or why people will botch their machinery. Remember that you are riding a high performance machine at speed .I've learned a) Never trust other people's work. b) Never believe what the vendor tells you. Check everything for yourself.
Thank you, that was an interesting series. I am contemplating buying an older Ducati, when I retire later this year and no longer need a motorbike for commuting into Central London. I’ve had Guzzis and a Jota, but never a Duke. One point worth mentioning is that a Zener Diode, which you say you used for the side stand mod, may not be the best choice. A regular silicon diode conducts in the direction towards the white band on one end. The voltage drop across the diode is normally 0.7V. The diode does not conduct in the opposite direction, until it reaches its breakdown voltage, as listed in the specifications. A 1N4001 is rated 50V and 1N4007 is 1000V, for example. Zener diodes are designed to break down at a precise voltage and are usually used as a voltage reference in regulator circuits. The Zener voltage of the diode you have used is 12V and at anything over that it ceases to be a diode and conducts in the reverse direction. I think you will probably be ok, from the limited information on your drawn schematic, but as the system voltage will normally be above 12V, if it doesn’t work as expected you know what to check. Zener diodes are usually rated in watts, because the amount of current they can pass, for a particular package is dependent on the Zener voltage. Regular diodes are rated in amps. Cheers. Nick.
I've keeping my eye out for an SP2 Wavey!!
Thanks for a wonderful series. I bought my 748 new in 2000 for $12k. Dollars were worth a lot more back then too. The good thing is it's all original and I know the knucklehead that's been working on it all these years. They are wonderful bikes and the Haynes manual is way better than the cryptic factory manual with 400 specialized tools. I did laugh when you said "classic motorcycle". I've always thought of the 748 as ultra modern, haha. It's the newest vehicle in my collection.
Brilliant 10 video really enjoyed it a lot . Next project cheap 98 r1 maybe ?? But a great watch 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great work & yes it pays to work on it yourself. I would definitely change the screen back to original clear & I would have replaced the coolant hoses. Otherwise, a fine achievement & next up, another classic Japanese bike.
Really enjoyed it especially the wiring of stand and neutral wrong way round, welcome to my world that is the norm for me. I have a 748 and a Ducati Pantah 500 your more then welcome to fettle with them.
M900 monster
6m17.. You have the diode the wrong way round compared to your schematic. Loved the videos of this bike though! :-)
Hello Dave, Thanks for putting together a great series on the 748. I bought my 2002 Biposto for a bargain price around the same time as you did, although it had been sat for 15 years. Had an enjoyable, although expensive time rebuilding mine (forks, shock, tank, fuel pump, etc had to be replaced). I'm in the same boat as you now that it's finished...…..have to wait to ride it!!! Thanks again for the enjoyable series and keep up the good work!!

Great series Dave, totally enjoyed it! Maybe an 851 sp3 next?😂 or a sports twin two stroke? Looking forward to the ride review in this! Ps, I've heard putting an external mic behind the windshield/upper front fairings enhances the natural engine sound! A must with a Ducati 👍😂
this hurts my heart. I bought myself a 748 around identical time to you. For £2200 i thought i had a bargain. I have it to roughly the state of this now but I need fairings and i am about the same price in as you. The sidestand switch is a must have, I will definitely be using this! very nice bike sir, I hope you have been able to enjoy it now.
I have an idea for your NEXT project , that is if you don't mind me saying so ..... go on KZread and learn how to make CUSTARD haha,ha keep up the good work and keep on Cracking , was inspirational and a great learning curve watching these episodes on the 748 , I myself have learnt a lot from them , not saying I would be able to do it but things to look for is a help . might have to fly you over to Australia to teach me !

Do you have any recommendations for someone interested in increasing their meager abilities in motorcycle maintenance? I’ve got a 2002 Harley that I’d love to work on but I’m kinda intimidated by getting into it! Any advice is very much appreciated!
thank you for the ducati mini series i thoroughly enjoyed it - a little sad to see it end if i am honest! would you do a quick riding it video - when allowed - just to finish the series off perhaps? thanks again for the uploads. looking forward to the next adventure, whatever it may be?

Great job Dave, looking good and I look forward to the first ride or maybe a track day to blow the cobwebs out? One thing though (and it's petty), but once you've seen something, you can't unsee it: Old balance weight tape on the front wheel, removing it would satisfy my OCD and tidy up the front end. But seriously, great work! Next project suggestions; old MV or Aprilia perhaps?

I am a die hard Kawasaki owner (with the exception of a CB750F drag bike that I ran back in the mid 80's). I started on a KE175 when I was 16, moved up to a KZ550 and then the CB750F. Then the brand new Ninja 900 came out (Top Gun) and I had to have one. I totaled it at 147mph 18 months later, but by then the 1986 Ninja 1000R was out. The day the cast came off my leg (from the 900 crash) I bought the 1000R. In 1992 I was forced to sell it (in pristine condition) to pay a lawyer in a child custody battle (which I won). For 12 years I was without a bike for the first time since I had a drivers license. in 2004 (38 years old), I thought my Superbike days were behind me. I bought a brand new Big Dog Pitbull. I loved that bike, but it never gave me the thrill of a crotch rocket. In 2014 (still had the Big Dog) I was goofing around on the internet. I thought I would do a search for a black 1986-1987 Ninja 1000R to replace the one I was forced to give up. I thought I would find only junk. I immediately found a 1987 1000R with 30,000 miles in pristine condition at a dealership in Boston (I live in Florida). I bought it for $2500 over the phone. Six days later it was delivered to me and I could not have been happier. Two year later (still had the Big Dog and the 1000R), I decided to search for the one bike that I always wanted but never had....the 1994-1995 Ninja 900R in green/white/purple. Again I thought I would only find junk, and I was right......but on the 3rd day of my search, I found a 1995 in the colors I wanted, all original (including the rear fender and turn signals, with only 3,100 miles on it. It looked BRAND NEW. It was at a Kawasaki dealership in Baxter, Minnesota. It had only been listed for sale for 2 days. They wanted $3500....I offered $2800, and they took it. I had the saleman shoot an I-Phone video of it while walking completely around the bike and I couldnt believe the condition. Five days later it was in my garage. I have since sold the Big Dog and added a 2012 ZX-6R for use on track days. I love all motorcycles. It was awesome to watch you go through this entire bike and rebuild many components. Thank you so much for posting your efforts.
Next build Aprilia
Bravo, definitely a good decision. I say Suzuki SRAD 750 next, only because that's what I want to convert to a track machine and wouldn't mind seeing how it's done. Thanks in advance ;)
I have just sat and watched all of your 748 videos.. how do you know how to do all that stuff. Its stunning i use to own a 748s ..i should of kept it.. So question is should i buy a 748 or a 999 .. yellow ...

”I rather like it...” It’s a Tamburini-Ducati. How could you not? The essence of sex on (two) wheels.

Hi Roman, I've never had Berik stuff but I think it's pretty good quality. I'd always recommend wearing a back protector too, so worth trying a suit on to check it'll fit well
