Here is the bike ... kzread.info/dash/bejne/gIusqs1tdqjSmZM.html I have switched out almost everything that moves including a Barnett clutch and had the engine tuned for the open track pipe. Can I expect this engine to become a money pit by 70k KM?

    We used to race a Bimota Tesi in British Superbikes years ago. Crank cases broke regularly, they weren't engineered for the kind of torque the larger capacity 4 valve head engines were producing. Loved Ducati's response to Japanese manufacturers increasing their engine service intervals by designing better engines. Ductai reprinted their manuals changing the service interval from 3,000 to 6,000 miles.

They are beautiful but they can be a bastard to work on. The bad coatings, rings, the exhaust guides, the cracking at the headstock all common issues on the 900ss for example that had to be sorted by the aftermarket.

    Interesting, my 1993 M900 had most of these ailments, broken cilinder studs, cracked swingarm an oil consumption. Biggelaar fixed the engine and did some porting and I was lucky to receive a new swing arm from the dealer Shirlaws in Aberdeen Scotland, where I bought the bike new in 1993. • @Jodyrides

    @Jodyrides

    4 жыл бұрын

    All bikes do not have problems. I have had my 94 Honda pacific coast for 25 years. I used it as a commuter mostly. I would not ride to work in the rain, but if it was going to rain I would ride to work, I didn’t mind riding home in the rain, I did not wash the bike. I did change clutch and brake fluid and oil often. I have never had a single problem with the bike in 25 years. Nothing. Not a fork seal, not a slave cylinder, not a bulb, not an O-ring, not a gasket, nothing has failed. Things have worn out like front brake pads, tires, batteries, but nothing has failed. I’ve had dozens of other bikes, they have had problems some of them, that’s why they’re not here anymore, especially the one and only BMW I have owned, never again,but my pacific coast has had zero failures. you said motorcycles all have problems, the major problem with any vehicle is, neglect. The second major problem is Over modification.Motorcycles and cars and pretty much all vehicles do not wear out, they are neglected to death had a 1986 Yamaha venture royale for 16 years. The only part that ever failed on that machine was, the front brake light switch built-in to the front brake lever perch. completely understandable because the brake light switch failed at approximately 110,000 miles.. I have owned 4 moto guzzi’s.. I currently own a Norge that I’ve owned for 12 years. Typical Italian vehicle. Not as perfect as a Japanese motorcycle like my gl1800 gold wing which I also currently own. but when you own an Italian motorcycle, you better carry a tool kit, and you better be able to think .. i’ve never been stranded by any of my Guzzi’s, I generally check the valve clearance on them every 2000 miles. Very easy, you don’t even have to pull the fuel tank to get the valve cover off. You don’t need to have any special tools or marry the dealer to check or even adjust the valves clearance. Generally takes 45 minutes, A wrench, a flat blade screwdriver, and a feeler gauge. Nothing like trying to adjust the valves on a Kawasaki concours 1400. it takes two hours just to get everything out of the way so you can get the valve cover off to even begin adjusting the valves. Or a V Strom 1000 or 650. Pain in the butt even just to change spark plugs not to mention changing valves adjustment. which brings us to Ducati’s. I have owned dozens and dozens of motorcycles. But I’ve never wanted a Ducati because of the frequency/difficulty adjusting the valves clearance. I sold motorcycles for 17 years part time in the evenings and weekends. I had a guy buy A very special/only 200 of this model made/Yamaha FZR 750 R.This was not the run of the mill off the assembly line FZR750.. it was different. It was expensive. The reason the guy went with the Yamaha over the Ducati he was considering is, he told me he was just about to buy the Ducati when the owner of the Ducati shop during negotiations,told him, I’ll even do the first valve adjustment for just $2000. that scared the buyer away from the Ducati. The Desmo valve system it’s so time-consuming and complex, that most Ducati owners never have the valves adjusted. A friend of mine has four Ducati‘s. He’s owned a couple of them for over 15 years. He has never had the valves checked, never had the timing belts replaced.. and that’s what happens to them. Motorcycles and cars, trucks, airplanes, they don’t wear out, they get neglected to death. So what I am saying is, most of the time, It’s not the owners having problems with their motorcycles,It’s the motorcycles having problems with their owners neglect, modifications, abuse...

    I suppose I'm "The One Guy" who said might as well punch it out since your Nikasil was fucked anyways? LOL - Good info on the ST2 cams being a direct cheap upgrade to stock 900ss! I have a complete low miles ST2 here I bought to use the engine in a water cooled Monster S4 - I cant wait to see how you make out with this (I'm voting you do the ST2 cams at this point, since their so cheap) Hahaha

    As always, enjoy the content. Wondering if you're familiar with the channel on you tube. A Norwegian guy building his own 50cc two stroke engine for a land speed record attempt. What I want to mention is that he did his own cylinder coating!!! It's a cool channel... I have a 2000 900SS (fuel injected) that's been giving me some aggravation. I also have an 2003 Aprillia RSV that I actually prefer over the Ducati, but it likes to go faster than I can ride and crash. I found a replacement fairing on USA ebay and am in the process of going from red to silver. I've been shopping for an ST-3, which I have been told is the ST to look for, but I may take another look at the ST-2. I want to replace my 2006 BMW K1200S which has never been quite right, and is the best wallet vacuum I have ever come across. I will be following this build with great interest! I wonder if ST-2 cylinders doubled in value in the last day or so??? Keep up the excellent work, and thanks!

    Andy..Just so I get this straight...The Valve guides are worn oval and the Cylinder coating and or rings have all Shit the bed...All within how many KMs.?...Was it run without an air-filter or what? I worry your putting a water-cooled piston/barrel Combo on an air -cooled bike...you may not have the clearances for that.With all those Duc boy`s experience, do they talk about the rear cylinder being fed a richer mix..?...You amaze me with your stubborn...Passion..Cheers..!

    What Toine is saying is that these are common issues with the 900SS. It would seem that mine has stuffed from poor quality oil rings and a poor quality nikasil coating, the jury is still out as to whether or not I have also suffered from poor valve guides. My bikes are all fastidiously maintained, but I have no idea about what may or may not have happened during the first 12,000 klms of its life. I am putting exactly the same configuration of barrel back on the bike, you will see this when I do the video. The only difference will be the bore diameter.

    The ST2 mod is one I haven’t heard of. I’m on the fence with it though !....how is it going to dissipate heat having no water cooling and no fins to dissipate the heat either. My 96 SS SP only has 14 thousand miles on it, I have not had any problems thus far and don’t expect any for a while. I see the dollar saving but I wouldn’t be happy to see liquid cooled cylinders on my air cooled engine. I am looking forward to see how your build goes. I think I’m going to take the precautionary route for now and buy a new Triumph Speed Twin !

  • @ANDY5

    It’s the same casting. It has fins just like the 900. The difference is that the 900 uses oil and air cooling and the ST2 uses water and air cooling. The oil in the 900 runs in the same gallery as the water in the ST2.

    You will need to fix your clutch. The original steel basket was like butter and the thrust plates not much better. I put a Barnett aluminium racing clutch and a bigger diameter slave cylinder in mine. Big improvement. Also a Speedimoto CNC machined alloy clutch cover that reduces clutch noise no end. Looks good too. And fits perfectly. Also suggest you increase your rear sprocket size by 3-5 teeth, that alone is the best performance improvement you can make. Then you move onto your suspension, just some proper weighted fork and shock springs and a tweak to the shock. Promecha did mine. Suggestion about tyres....never use a Michelin tyre on a Ducati. It will see you in the weeds. Stick with Pirelli Diablo Corsa otherwise you will regret it to the max. Michelin washes out front and rear, I tried everything including tyre pressures, suspension settings and gave up after 6 months of headaches and binned the Michelin’s. The 900SS is a slow steering bike compared to Japanese bikes because of the wheelbase, rake and trail. Do yourself a favour and use only Pirelli Diablos

    No doubt early Ducatie's were plagued with reliability problems. So when I purchased my leftover 2017 Panigale 1299 S, my first Ducati ,a year ago, I purchased a 6 year unlimited mileage guarantee . In 11 months of riding, 15,000 miles of trouble free fun, FAST riding,, NO problems!! I'm so pleased I ordered a 2020 V 4 S street fighter. The 1299 dyno results , consistent 197 rear wheel horse on 91 octane fuel. weighed in @ 398 lbs . Only modification Akrapovic full race titanium exhaust. I do have one complaint, every oil change 3- 3500 miles,, I MUST replace rear tire lol. PLEASE be safe everyone.
