One of my fave players growing up in the 90's..This man was pure silk..One of the best ball carriers i've ever seen and such a gifted and technical footballer..Absolute class

My all-time favourite. And he hurt my team (Ireland) on occasion! Even his movement was a level removed from any other player. It seemed as if he was gracefully skating on ice while everyone else trudged through grass. Viva Il Maestro. 💚

Como sportinguista só tenho a dizer isto, Rui Costa desde que entrou no Mundo do futebol tem sido sempre um Senhor, quer nos clubes onde passou como nas Selecções e mesmo agora quando o Benfica não ganha mantém sempre um nível elevado, foi pena ter acabo a carreira em 2007/08, na minha opinião um dos plantéis mais fracos do SLB dos últimos 20 anos, em Portugal são poucos os atletas que estão ao seu nível no que toca a amor e dedicação ao seu clube. Foi um prazer ver Rui Costa a jogar e parabéns ao SLB por ter formado um génio dentro e fora de campo.

Rui Costa was always one of the most humble players out there. Mad respect for returning to the club which raised him and happy to see him still as a functionary at Benfica. Its just sad that he, as part of the golden generation around figo, Simão, Baía and Pauleta never won a EC or WC. That team had deserved it.

This guy is and always will be my favourite player. He represents all the romance in the game. That he loved Eusebio so much and represented a great historic club like Benfica is so appropriate.

It's just like the video description states: "Rui Costa is one the last football romantics". There are no words to describe this man love for the club. There is one particular chapter of our history that was barely addressed in this video and shows Rui's dedication to Benfica: "Verão Quente 93". Benfica's finances were very bad at that point in time and, our greatest rival, Sporting, had a very healthy financial situation. Sporting successfully approached some of our players (the whole squad was unhappy at the time due to several issues the main on being, allegedly overdue wages). That summer, we lost Pacheco and Paulo Sousa (the latter, an absolute brilliant player) and almost lost João V. Pinto (the golden boy) to our greates rival!! For Benfica fans it was the apocalypse. Just to get a sense of the dimension of that event, imagine Man Utd or PSG or Celtic or Barcelona loosing a star, someone very cherished by the supporters to Liverpool, Marseille, Rangers and Real Madrid respectively... Oh wait, the last example did happen thanks to Figo "el pesetero" lool. As Rui mentioned in the piece, at the time he was going trough a very dificult personal situation (living in a basement [just try to imagine that today, a profissional world-class football player living in a basement on the outskirts of a European capital], his family barely maneging to pay some of their bills etc). This episode alone shows how much of a fanatic Rui was for Benfica, to the point that he would consciously harm himself and his family for the sake of the club. Much more could be written about this gentlemen, but i just wanted to state that We love you Rui! And we know you love us!!! Beeenficaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!

I became a benfica fan against my family being all sporting fans, but I never really cared for benfica, but i did fall inlove with Rui Costa's touch... the man wrote poetry with a football, and when he was about to move to Barcelona I believe i was crying my eyes out...until...he was made official in the love of my life, Fiorentina, I was there in the old, legendary, monumental Estádio da Luz when he scored that gorgeous goal against Benfica and I was there in his last game, for me Rui Costa is genuinly the last of the true *perfect* playmakers, worthy of the number 10 jersey in any club. To you Rui Manuel César Costa, I thank you for everything you given to us Fiorentina fans, Benfica fans and football fans, you are truly one of the greatest we won't ever see again in a thousand life times.

Congratulations, Carlos Miranda. this was superb. Rui Costa was a monster on Cm 97/98. I played him in the hole behind either one or two strikers and he obliterated teams. If I remember correctly, he played for me in a winning Champions League final for Liverpool aged thirty - eight.

Coming from America, I knew very little of "O Maestro" until viewing this wonderfully crafted reflection. Costa's unparalleled sacrifice of his deep passion for the football club over the lucrative compensation conveys ultimate sportsmanship.
