Nada tem haver, o patrocínio nas camisolas de Emirates só começou em 2015! O novo Estádio da Luz foi inaugurado 25 de Outubro de 2003 Porque havia o antigo estádio da Luz, um estádio imponente, que chegou a levar 135 mil pessoas! Pode-se dizer que o Projeto é igual do Arsenal sendo mais pequeno Emirates Stadium! Mas atenção, o Estádio da luz, pode um dia mudar de nome, mais isso implica uma parte financeira, imaginamos que se chama Emirates Stadium, a Emirates tinha que pagar bem ao Benfica para ficar com o nome Emirates Stadium deu para entender?

Ah, the famed Bela Guttmann curse. Personally I think that Benfica are simply stuck in a vicious circle where bad luck, superstition and nervousness all play a part, just like you have to remember that no finals are automatically 50-50 encounters. You are bound to be playing really good opponents.

Bela Guttman didn’t actually curse the club. That’s a myth that is told to these days but that is not the truth actually. He did get pretty angry at the benfica president at the time and then he was interviewed by a Austrian(I think it was Austrian) newspaper where he told what happened. and then through translation from Austrian to Portuguese it came out as a curse but it’s not what he actually said, he even returned to benfica a few years after

A few more fun facts: Eusebio was the first Portuguese player to win the Balon d'Or. And he was also the first African player, as he was born in Mozambique, and the first black player to win the BO. Strange that no one ever mentions that. The word Luz means light, but it's also the name of the neighbourhood adjacent to Benfica. Luz is where the first Estadio da Luz was built and thus it's name. So the literal translation of fEstadio da Luz as the Stadium of Light is technically a misnomer. And the original Estadio da Luz was at the time the biggest stadium in Europe and the 3rd biggest in the world, holding up to 120,000 people. Mad considering Lisbon is a relatively small city of only 500,000 people. So when full, more than 20% of the city's population would be in that stadium.

That’s a strange one, since the ‘ curse’, had no idea about that, it’s amazing, all these snippets of unique history you’re unearthing for us, really enjoyed that! Interestingly, man United became the first English club to win the European cup, beating Benfica in 1968, if my history is right ?

As a benfica fan since ever, I am very proud of my club and my country. I loved this vlog, thank you so much for sharing and showing why we are one of the best clubs in Europe ❤️

Great vid and lots of interesting facts. Glad you asked about the Santa Clara badge, used to manage them in FM for that very reason just so I could try to usurp Benfica haha. Also used to do the same with Forest Green Rovers back when they had their old Barca like badge.

I think I remember a few years ago, a Benfica-Porto match, in the former Estadio da Luz, when the security measures were not up to today's standards, an attendance of 135,000 spectators and the thousands who were unable to enter, all of this in a country of 10,000,000 inhabitants.

Every time you mentioned the bike wheel, I re-lived the shock with you all over again. I would have NEVER known. Cheers

Great video! Also quick note, Santa Clara is a team from the island of São Miguel Açores. The Azores are a group of 9 islands and not just 1. Wanted to clear that out cause the guide did say that the the bird symbol on the badge was an azor from “the Island of Açores” lol. Love the video tho! ❤️❤️

As a Benfica fan, having watched Benfica lose back to back Europa league finals in 2013 and 2014, it really was painful. The commentators always liked to bring up the curse, but I was confident in Benfica winning it..

Since the Bella Gutman's curse Benfica lost.. 5 European Champions final's 1 UEFA Cup 2 Europe League 3 youth league Champions League 😬😬 Benfica is easily top-10 of the most iconic and historical clubs of the world

The stadium is to go under some serious renovation inside and out next season. So next time you visit it'll be different for sure. Great job!

Eusebio only won one champions cup, 61/62. he wasn't still in Benfica in 60/61. Amazing video on an amazing historic club

Been Lisbon beautiful city. I saw Estadio Da Luz from outside but had such little time to visit stadium. So want to see it as its a home away from home stadium for me.

You should go to Madeira to see the CR7 museum, Martimo and National.

It wasn't just the three big clubs that got stadiums. 10 stadiums were built for the Euros and their respective cities/teams. Most of them are not in full use now as these smaller teams often get relegated and can't afford the costs of massive stadiums for such small audiences. Portugal has some of the smallest average audience in Europe - mostly due to how most people support the three big teams in addition to their local teams and the quality of the football practised suffers in consequence.

Myself and a mate are going to be in Lisbon next week and are going to take in the Benfica vs Vizela match (not a classic but always try to get a game in when travelling) what is the current situation with regards to COVID? COVID passports? PCR/lateral flow test? What do you need to show before getting in to the stadium? Thanks.

Hiya Chris, thanks very much for watching mate. Very relaxed within Portugal in terms of covid. Masks required but no vaccine passports or covid tests needed to get in anywhere. You need your vaccine passport & passenger locator form for the flight over here but once here you're all good to go! Cheers and enjoy!!!

Em Portugal Benfica ganhou mais mas ja nao ganha a 3 anos e neste seculo o Porto ganhou 3 trofeus na Europa e pode ganhar mais um este ano. 2003, 2004 e em 2011. Isso o fenomeno mesmo! Wow not just the trophies won but the number of trophies won on the tour that’s incredible.

Come to Portugal again and please do a video about an also very historic club: Boavista FC. We were champions of Portugal and won 5 national cups, played in the champions league, reached the semi finals of the eruopa league againts celtic and then were relagated. Fotyunatly we are back in the firts divison since 2014!

Luz refers to a Lisbon parish were the stadium was built, Parish of Luz. In Lisbon theres also the Hospital da Luz, nothing to do with the lights of the stadium.
