The Maddest Mid-size SUV Out There - HiPhi Y

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

HiPhi's penchant for making tech-filled cars with outlandish designs has helped them build quite a reputation in the premium market segment in China, and now they're bringing their unique brand of madness to Europe. But, despite what you were taught at school, after X and Z comes Y, and this is one targeting a more mainstream kind of customer. A little more conservative in its design, does the Y nevertheless hold up the HiPhi brand values and deliver a uniquely techy experience with a hint of drama. You bet it does. We took a drive in one to find out how it does.
Prices:
¥339,000 to ¥449,000
£36,300 to £48,000
$47,500 to $62,900
€42,300 to €56,000
*Sadly HiPhi looks to be on the ropes and awaiting a lifeline from Changan to keep going. Let's see how things go.

Blimey! The Chinese car market has certainly come of age with their tech & design, This Hi-Phi Y is astonishing good, The people poo pooing Chinese brands are just ridiculous in this day & age. The Chinese EV car market is the only one I follow online as it's the best by a wide margin to others. I've had a MG ZS EV for three years now & love it, It's been faultless but I'd love to upgrade to one of these beauties. Thanks for a great review.

You're very welcome. You're also totally right about the Chinese market, there are so many who cannot comprehend how good they've gotten with EVs and connectivity and tech and denial is just delaying the inevitable. Now they just need to slowly turn their reputation around in the minds of Europeans and they'll be really really strong.

A good EV is not only a car full of gadgetry, capable of sophisticated light shows. It must have a supporting environment: Show rooms, demonstration cars, technical support centers with adequate spare part supply... especially if they come all the way from China (!), and most importantly access to a wide-ranging, dependable and reasonably priced fast-charging network. The latter, of ALL manufacturers, only Tesla has. It must also be manufactured profitably.. or, in the initial phase, the manufacturer must have the financial resources to take the unavoidable early losses. HiPhi has nothing of that and, according to the latest news from China, is going bankrupt, leaving its early customers stranded with a non-supported worthless asset. But, just maybe, it will be taken over by a more dependable manufacturer??? I doubt it however.

In the rolling sequences filmed from the outside like for example 14:45-14:51 the suspension seems to make the body pretty pitchy lengthwise. It's like the body constantly pitches up and down between the front and the back. Ideally you'd want the suspension to "eat" the road and thus keeping the body still. Or is this a phenomena of the camera work? Did you have a follow car doing the shooting or a body mounted "selfie stick" camera?

  • @InsideChinaAuto

Thanks for the comment. In terms of the moving shots, we had to borrow footage from HiPhi for that as the timing of the day meant we didn't have the chance to get all the shots we normally would so I'm not sure what set-up they had, I suspect a camera man in another car but I can't confirm that. Certainly driving it there was no feel of pitching front to back but I'm not sure what road they filmed the shots on.

Nice looking car - no powered tailgate seems a massive oversight, given all the other (arguably "overkill") tech elsewhere. I drive an Skoda Enyaq, and this looks to be similar size/boot space etc... but with a lot more bells and whistles. Only problem is UK is RHD, and so we get everything Chinese just about last in the world, due to cost of modifying driving position. A few exceptions being MG, BYD (Chinese), Hyundai, Kia Korean). there just seems to be so much good choice of EVs in China... still wouldn't want to live there though.
