I owned a bass with a ski jump years ago (naked, no gates) loads of fun but the C string was always sticking as it was the "wrapped around the scroll" type rather than the drill through routing. Thanks for the closeup of the machine extension. Superb workmanship by Mr Penning. I'd love to see/hear the machine extension in action...

I've seen more capo extensions than mechanic in person. I personally been using a 5 string upright for 5 months now so if it were up to me I'd go for the capo style extension

Every method has it's strengths and weaknesses, but the 5 string is the overall best solution for orchestra/continuo playing.

is it possible to detune the C extension to low A (minor third below)?
