Workshop: George Martin Looking at Double Bass Overstand

Музыка

In this video, we take a trip to the workshop with George Martin to discuss an often overlooked part of double bass setup: the overstand. George explains what this term means and how it affects playability, sound, and the wear and tear of the instrument itself, referring to a number of new and old instruments to illustrate.

The bigger overstand is really important on extended Range Basses because bringing the strings & bow further away from the body helps alot.

That was very interesting, the old violin style bass was cool. I'd be interested to see how sound posts work as well.

Thanks a lot for these videos. When changing the overstand do you have a certain formula for fingerboard projection to keep a proper angle where the strings go over the bridge? Or a specific angle measurement to keep tension off the top? I've read 148 degrees is a measurement used as a starting point for 3/4 basses. Thanks for anything you can share

Who is the maker of the second bass George is handling? Is it French? It looks very similar to the Jacquet Gand played by the great Charlie Haden.

Great video, thanks! So a bigger overstand can give better bow clearance, better playability in the upper register and/or lower pressure on the top of the bass. But what are the disadvantages? I can imagine a higher load on the neck block but no other disadvantages? Great to see the workshop and activity around you. That violin shaped bass is so nice! And who cares about the wide shoulders if you don't play solo repertoire? Is the dark edge from patina or is it darker varnish?

You're right maybe the neck joint is very slightly weaker, but we have never had any problems. Yes, the dark edge is from patina. Thank you for the comment and watching our videos; keep an eye out for more workshop videos coming up :D

first thanks for all this information its really usefull i have some questions, how much angle did you use on the strings at the bridge? is this a standar angle or depends on what kind of music you gonna play ? its different for jazz music where musician go only on pizz?

Does decreasing the tension on top makes for more sound? I always thought the reason they increased neck angle in cellos after the baroque period was exactly to add more tension to the top, and that it made for a bigger sound somehow. My current cello has a lower-than-modern-standard neck angle, and I think a standard overstand. The local luthier suggested that if one day I need to open it, I should probably reposition the neck for a higher angle... Should I? Also do you deal with cellos at all? I have commissioned a new one a few days ago and this got me thinking if the overstand in cellos should also be increased.

Does anyone know if increasing the over stand improve the sound quality and or the sound projection of the the instrument?

Dear George , should I measure the overstand itself or when I measure it must be included the fingerboard? I mean , if the overstand is 50 mm, this is not included the fingerboard, it is my doubt!!! Thanks for the video , absolutely useful !!!
