Double Bass Extension | Joseph Conyers, Double bass

Музыка

Before the double bass was invented, cellists were the bass voice of the string family. Therefore, when it was introduced it was not called the double cello, because the function was that it doubled the bass line. We play one octave lower than a cello.
However, standard 4-string double basses only go down to an E. The cello’s lowest note matches the pitch of our C on the A string. To be able to play an octave down from that, luthiers designed what is referred to as an extension.
It is an extra piece of ebony that extends our fingerboard back to the scroll, to allow for more notes which enables us to play a low C, one full octave lower than the cello. In Europe, many bass players play on 5 string basses. Their 5th string, the lowest string, is a B natural, so it is even a half step lower than an extension C. To match that, some 4 string basses with extensions also get what is called a hipshot. It is like a fine tuner down by the tailpiece which can also help us extend down to a low B.
Look out for a video on this in the future.

Given the double bass's relationship with the violone, it makes sense that we have 5 stringers. More would be cumbersome given the larger size of a double bass, less would be restrictive given the repertoire. Violones were once a "stylish" instrument for the time period (and were much more affordable than a harpsichord). Also, they came in various ranges kind of like some brass and woodwinds. They even had various string numbers from three to six.

An alternative to the C extension or 5 string bass is to tune in 5ths, C, G, D, A low to high. Works for Joel Quarrington, Red Mitchell and others. No extension required and the string tension is slightly lower on the top than both a 5 string or a bass with C extension. Sounds beautiful and deep too.

Wow.... That's getting super fancy now. 😄 I'm sure that could totally work. I'd be curious if the reduced tension on the top might make the instrument less "punchy." Very cool concept though.

Joseph, I switched from 4ths to 5ths about five years ago and it’s been the best thing ever…I like it for jazz - I like it better for orchestra. It definitely lends itself to staying away from open strings and also opens another realm of double stops. It took me about 3 months to get reading back close to the same level as before, but the sound, to me, is definitely worth the hassle. With just a set of strings range is extended in both directions and you have free access down to low C. Opening and closing levers is crazy. 😂

In fact, if I were to go back to teaching, 5ths tuning would be highly recommended, if not required. 4ths tuning is a bad dimension, man, lol…it feels clipped and stuffy now by comparison.

4-string basses with (or without) different kind of extensions and 5-string basses with low B or low C. The plethora of options (and let's not get started with high C, tuning in fifths, viennese tuning, solo tuning, drop tunings and other scordaturas...) with their own different possibilities. Sometimes composers forget that beside the upper GDA strings it's not granted what the lower open string(s) are when writing harmonics, double stops and other stuff where it matters.

Hi Joe, I have had just about all types of Extensions at one time or another including a few 5ers., The German machine, Horst or Stenholm/USA (owned them both) are reverse chromatic. The English Ext. is Chromatic in the keys. I have had only the E Capo, the E & D and fully chromatic. I have not yet and probably never will have a Chromatic B-fingered Ext. But, they are all fun to have and use. Thanks so much for this video. (:

I remember playing Haydn Surprise Symphony at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival and there were 8 basses, 12 or so cellos. I was the only player with an extension so when a C string opportunity came I ripped it since I was the only one causing the young cellist in front of me to jump out of her chair and begin laughing uncontrollably. It was a quiet accompaniment section and it caused the conductor to stop the whole orchestra and ask what’d happened since he couldn’t perceive it. Luckily the cellist couldn’t stop laughing to make her case and everything just continued on. Extension joy. Also I always heard that composers would write for the range of the organ so even though we couldn’t even play those notes (especially with 3 stringers) they did it anyways since that’s what they wanted. By the time of Brahms there were at least some standards for the instrument (probably outlined by Berlioz + the father connection) so the parts actually started to make sense.

Great vid as always Joseph! Just a thought have, do you ever set the lower string to enhance enharmonics? For example if a work is in the key of D major and even though you might not have to play low "D" you set the bass up so your lowest note is the D? Also Beethoven 6 I knew a guy that badly hurt his hand trying to play a machine extension to get that lick right! 5 Strings are fun though difficult I agree - but if your the only 5 stringer in the band and are playing something on the B string it feels as if your Hercules, and it's like holding up the whole orchestra! Gota love playing the bass! :-)

Hi I‘m from Austria Europe. I have to say 5 strings are common here. I really think this also goes for Germany. But it‘s mostly for professional orchestra. Two players share one music stand (Pult) and often times one of them plays a 5. Buuut most players don’t own the bass. It belongs to the orchestra and the only play it there. Another buuuuut: I had like five or six 5 string basses in my hands and only one of them had a B string (H-Saite for Austria and Germany) all the others were G D A E C. I think that‘a thing. Most of them don‘t work really nice with a low B. Cool video!! I also have a C-extension. It‘s not very common here, but i studied Jazz and my Professor was from US. He got one.... so i wanted to have one. Thanks for the video, best regards from Austria, Lukas

That's a 5 String Electric Bass, it's much easier to carry than a Double Bass due to its size. There's a reason alot of Rock n Roll Upright Bassists from the 40s & 50s switched over to the Bass Guitar cause it's smaller, much easier to carry, the frets made it easier to find the notes (there are Fretless Bass Guitars too but they're less common), & because it's plugged into an Amp, it's much punchier.
