The Lovely Story of a Creepy DM and His Crazy Wife - RPG Horror Stories

Ойын-сауық

I just ran a really incredible D&D game with 0 combat, which rarely happens in my campaign. It was a good time and maybe it'll come up in a TTT episode. Anyway, I hope you guys are having a pleasant morning, I myself am getting ready to hang out with my mom, so I'll get to that.
RPG Horror Stories is a series where I read through stories from Reddit and my own email while giving advice on how to avoid the issues that lead to such stories in the first place.

That secretly-evil wizard using blatantly-evil spells reminds me of a post I saw a while ago where someone asked (in-character) if the party should worry that their wizard is yelling "Evil Blast" when using their spell, only to be informed that it's fine, and the spell is named after it's inventor Notatall Evil. Then also mention things like "Crueltyfree Torture" as similar 'Light-aligned' spells, too. Who knows, maybe this secretly-evil wizard was using the same kind of 'totally good' spells that are just unfortunately-named.

Iirc (it's been literal decades by now) Death Touch was, honestly, a pretty standard wizard attack spell kind of thing. Any kind of attack spell can seem "evil", depending on how you use it. Fireball is a Perfectly Normal Spell if you're using it to kill a gelatinous cube, but evil if you're using it to burn down an orphanage. The secret evil was more things like... going back to someone we'd dealt with to kill and/or steal from them when the party wasn't paying attention, or something like that. I'm not sure what it says about, well, anything that said Evil Wizard was played by a psychiatrist who, iirc, worked at a mental hospital... In another game with that group, either he or another player was a non-evil necromancer. Priest of Anubis or something.

The first sentence of Kitsune Fantasy is far too relatable. 😅 Back when I started in 3.5, I was identifying as male but almost always played female characters. At one point I remember my best friend ("Clark" from the previously narrated Rocks Fall. Literally. story) asking "You're playing as a girl *again* ?" Several years later, I finally transition to female, and Clark is genuinely the least surprised out of anyone. 😆 I so vividly remember his message saying "So you *are* trans!!!" Real ones get you, even when you're not being honest with yourself. PS: Always amazing to see Mobster Crispy!!!

An easy answer as to the 'research' the DM in the kitsune story probably did: In most media where kitsunes are portrayed, they're given shapeshifting powers. So a kitsune turning into the opposite gender of what they would consider their 'true form' would likely be very easy for them. Doesn't excuse what he did to OP of course, but his take on kitsunes being able to change gender is technically true. Even if its like asking if a dragon can light a match lol.

  • @phobiawitch835

I’ve got my own hirror story regarding a Kitsune, sadly. She was my half orc’s step mom. And let’s just say that while at the initial introduction, I loved the character, I quickly realized just how, bad things were when the math added up. Long story short, she was basically the same age as my character, and had married my father within a year of my character leaving home in his backstory. And had his first half sister during it as well. My character left when he was 15, and was 25 at the time of the meeting of the stepmother. Meaning my character’s father, who I had always imagined between 18-21 years older than my character, was between 33 and 36, marrying AND HAVING CHILDREN WITH a 15/16 year kitsune teenager. Doesn’t help the DM decided ti make my character’s father an alcoholic and abusive to both half sisters and the stepmom, which hit different for, personal reasons I was uncomfortable sharing with that DM. I have that dm blocked and haven’t talked to them in over 2 years.

Man I'd like to play a kitsune at some point because they are my favourite mythological creature of all time and I'd like to be lore accurate (so Cleric for Inari or Rogue for Yoko) and considering the fact that two of Kitsune's most well known traits are: love ironic punishment (common stories include making a golden coin that weighs tons to tempt a greedy man and other such tales) and being EXTREMELY loyal (if you save a kitsune's life they will do anything for you until they feel they have paid you back, and often they view themselves as owing you the rest of their life) it annoys me that so many stories seem to involve them in a spicy way. Yes they can seduce people, but it's usually to get what they want, OR they owe you a debt and see you are single and lonely. They truly are a strange creature, but they are essentially Fae creatures so that's no shock

I am glad I have never really had any conflict over the typical loot that my parties get for encounters. My players are typically pretty good at sharing and "party loot" sheets are a common feature in games I've played in. Things get a little dicier when the loot is chaotic, cursed or dangerous. Ultra powerful demon slaying swords with minds of their own, a crystal with an ancient Dragon inside, chalk that opens portals to random other dimensions, an insanely complicated mechanical device that is really the controls to a space laser.....these are where the debates and borderline fights happen. One player still has a grudge against another for throwing a sword with the spirit of a long dead warrior that they intended on helping into the ocean because they sensed it had an undead presence. The one that threw the sword into the ocean was an old school player and I don't think they realized that these days undead does not automatically mean evil.

It has a high entry cost, as all participants will be revived should they fail, and take away 200,000 gold should they beat it. No one ever wins, and no one ever gets resurrected - instead, they're replaced by a changling. OR The lucky dip. You watch as the attendant fills a bag of holding up with low level loot. You can then ask for the bag to be filled with more loot. For every time you ask, another, empty bag will be placed in a barrel. Finally, when you're happy, the loot bag is thrown in the barrel. You then get to retrieve one bag and it's contents. There's just one bag of holding, the rest are bags of devouring

D&D Horror Story from this past Sunday: So we had our first combat with our two new players (one player officially left, another player had ghosted), right as we left our hubtown up in the mountains. A blue guard drake appeared stuck under a fallen tree and the bard (one of the two new players) went to try and befriend it, maybe help. Our Barbarian (vampire/werewolf hybrid, ala Underworld, but furrier) sniffed out that this was an ambush and we quickly got piled up on by 9 guard drakes. Now, of course you're thinking "Oh, easy first encounter, each of them has middling AC and 20-ish HP each, this'll be fun to bring in the new people!" And you'd be wrong. The DM said the words that haunt me whenever he says them: "I modified them :D" So a fight that could have lasted an hour-hour and a half turned into 3 grueling hours of our characters working our assess off to not die. The bard dropped at one point, the barbarian and my gunslinger got bit to shit just trying to get to her and feeding her a health potion and we barely managed to kill a couple of the drakes by that point, while our Ranger/Rogue was shooting pot-shots at these 50+HP modified monsters from as far away as they could! We plan to escape, with the bard now conscious and she Dimension Doors herself and the barbarian 500ft away in the direction of the Ranger/Rogue. My fighter gets bit up even more and now there's no way for me to escape, because they'll catch up to me in no time, regardless if I disengage or risk dashing. So I have my fighter climb a tree and start taunting the things, shooting them from an elevated position and praying that they don't pull a Tremors 2 and start piling on each other. We managed to survive, killing about half of the drakes, thanks to the Ranger casting Entangle and the Barbarian jumping from tree to tree to get to me and carry me out of combat, but HOLY SHIT were we pissed after that session. The DM has a really bad habit of modifying encounters to a grueling slug pace where every fight is a battle for survival (something that was not mentioned on the game listing) and most of the times he has his DMPCs come in to lend a hand (He's had our former Cleric's god intervene both directly and indirectly through an avatar in two separate fights and a "mysterious entity" bought the Barbarian's soul so he could get back up, run through stopped time and catch my fighter's limp body, before he fell in a young dragon's lair). I stuck to the game so far out of pity for the guy, 'cause he keeps losing players and stuff keeps happening irl to him, but I've lost the pity by this point and am just annoyed every session. After we finish this arc, I'll be leaving the game, because I'm just done. If he hadn't brought in more people, who are nice and friendly and work well with us in-game, I'd be gone already.

As much as I understand that you are joking about your Destiny withdrawal I do sympathise with becoming borderline addicted to a video game. In my teens I was actually addicted to WoW. I obsessively logged on every day and would stay up far too late to get just one more daily done. It was only with hindsight I realised how self destructive my behaviour was and how even a video game can legitimately hook someone so badly.

The kitsune and the last part sounds like the bs the roleplay AI i have does sometimes to my character and consider AI learns from humans - which bastard had to teach that to the AI.

just thought of a cool dnd idea u make characters and such but than at the very start you all die and then you play the characters you made or something like that be a fun start your whole group dying to the main big bad and it'd shot how dangerous they are

The House of Grief fight was so hard that I considered giving them Shadowheart... for about 10 seconds. Seriously, breaking into hell, robbing a devil, and killing him and all his minions in his own house was easier and more fun than l... wait, maybe that's why it's called the House of Hope. Anyway, F Shar
