It seems like most people in the Lost Media community don’t have the guts to admit what we’re all thinking… most of these leads don’t reply simply because they can’t bother. Laziness and not caring is lost media’s biggest enemy.

  • @SeanSMST

    @SeanSMST

    Жыл бұрын

It's a multitude of factors, as everything is. Laziness, breaching contract from leaking, the limited privilege and access employees and other individuals can have. If the person they contact knows a guy directly related to it, they refer you to that guy. But if they don't know anyone from their knowledge, it can be damn hard if not near impossible to get a contact themselves and do their own investigation. If they're actually intrigued by the investigation, they might perform their own. If not, then why would they bother? They got more important responsibilities after all, everyone's human and has a life.

  • @Jezzikinz

yeah idk if its necessarily laziness or not caring - i'm sure LSSQ is probably not the only person to contact people. Some might just get fed up with leads that go nowhere and for all we know they may have checked multiple times. Im sure it would become pretty annoying after awhile. It would be nice if people could get back with some kind of answer but most often if they haven't found anything theyre not going to report back.

I think he should send from a more professional email. I work for a company, and if I saw a weird ass name like that pop up in my inbox, I'd probably just disregard it. But I check every email with a legitimate name because it might be someone within the company. Also, almost every company has rules against leaking company information which could result in being fired or even sued, so many people won't respond because it's not worth the risk to even engage at all.

@@atlasfollower1706 The Lost Media Wiki doesn't like people speaking on their behalf in contact emails. What happens is some rando who watched a couple lost media KZread videos will decide to send an email stating "Hi, I'm from the Lost Media Wiki!" and put words in our mouths while we're completely unaware this is happening. I would also argue it isn't as genuine. People relate to being in the situation of not being able to find a show/song that they remember: that's a relatable story. Saying that your intent is to archive/preserve something comes across as cold and is difficult to connect with. At the end of the day the root reason we want it is just because we're curious to watch it, and it's better to play into that angle and express genuine interest, rather than obfuscate it with lost media terminology under the guise of sounding more professional that way. That's not to say you shouldn't aim to write a professional sounding email, only that hiding your real, personal motive hurts the overall message.

@@trueblue97 You are correct we have not seriously considered asking Sakurai, even though it has been suggested numerous times, for three reasons. 1) He is popular on Twitter so it would probably be difficult to get his attention. 2) Slamfest was an advertising campaign, and was the creation of Nintendo's advertising agency, Golin. Sakurai was probably more focused on creating the game itself. 3) The Slamfest event was handled by Nintendo of America, not Japan, so it is unlikely Sakurai would even know about it. For these reasons, it would require a lot of effort to get his reply, and for something he likely knows nothing about. The same applies for most other big names at Nintendo - if they weren't at NoA, they wouldn't have been directly involved with Slamfest.

This search gets more and more fascinating to me. I love that we got another update and there’s still potential for this stream being found in some form. I honestly really do think Kit & Krysta would be your guys' best bet. Active, easy to contact, are fans of Nintendo themselves so the whole search might actually matter to them, etc. Like you said, they themselves don't have it, but they almost certainly have contacts in Nintendo who can at least check if there's a possibility NoA might have saved it.

I know it's the pretty much the "only" chance we have, but I really, really doubt whoever streamed the file still has it after 20 years. Obviously there's a chance, but a video file making it from hard drive to hard drive, for 20 years, is pretty unlikely. Or even worse, someone still keeping his old 90s hard drive for some reason, and that hard drive being in working condition. The file was offered as a download by Nintendo so there's a chance that person didn't think it was a "rare file" to have in the first place and deleted it soon after.

I wouldn't write it off yet. I once unearthed a nearly 20 year old recording of a relatively obscure band just by reaching out to the radio host / audio engineer. He seemed to have archived all of the shows he'd done in his career and had it re-uploaded it within like a week of my reaching out (even though I was likely the only one who had asked or cared about it at the time lol). Not that this situation is the same but if theres even one person who had put some passion behind this, there's a good chance they might have a copy. It's just a matter of getting in touch with the right people!

  • @tomysshadow

While I understand the concern, this kind of speculation isn't particularly useful. There is such a thing as useful speculation, for theory crafting ideas of places we can check, but this particular comment doesn't translate into an action we can take (other than "give up," but why would we if there's at least some potential?) Until we at least take a good stab at trying, we can't know for sure how likely or unlikely it is, so there isn't a point in guessing.

Suffice to say, I support you guys on this search, and while I don't have any leads as I wasn't around to see it since I hadn't even been born yet, I truly do hope that there is a chance of us getting to see this piece of Nintendo history someday.

Personally if you name drop when it's not asked for or it's not exactly relevant, like the onstream media contact, it can dissuade people from being as courteous. Name dropping can come off a bit too forward. I wouldn't say it's aggressive, but it can be quite pushy or forced. It can have people start to create distance because it can come off as weird, or like unasked for. Namedropping should be done when it's entirely relevant, but the email you sent seemed it wasn't needed to get your message across, since something like 'I messaged former employees' and something similarly vagueish would've worked. Name dropping is usually fine if you're even an acquaintance with someone, not complete strangers, but depending on how relevant the name drop is, it can give a similar response.

She didn't know a thing about the company and was surprised how I was so hyped when she told me about her work. Best they can do is to buy you some product cheaper when they say they are buying it for themselves. She didn't know a thing about games and other stuff too... Just so technical diffuculties and that is all. She couldn't even cotnact anybody higher...

It is so funny to hear SHOUTcast discussed in anything resembling glowing terms, haha. Granted it was SHOUTcast streams that got me into trance and helped me discover how easy it was (post-KaZaA) to download TV shows when I randomly encountered quite possibly the very Family Guy stream mentioned in this video, back when liking Family Guy was a badge of coolness rather than a badge of mild shame. Anyway, yeah, I guess Apple and KZread really want people to believe they each invented easy online audio and video streaming respectively these days

I’m always amazed by the similarities that lost media and genealogy research share, mostly the issues they face. When searching for relatives and information I sent upwards of 200 physical letters around the world and only ended up getting a response to maybe 5 of them. It took months for some to respond who did at least provide information I wouldn’t have been able to find otherwise. Hopefully it’ll be true in this case and someone will finally respond back months later with a copy of the event 🤞🏻

I still have hope that someone had a recording of it, I’m shocked there haven’t been any home media/personal recording of it released from the crowd viewing it or journalists that covered it dumping it online. Usually that’s how stuff like that is found, someone happens to have a recording/file and just decides to upload it to KZread. It would be cool to know if someone either current or formerly at Nintendo might still have a copy saved somewhere too, but unless you’re a massive creator or have business contacts getting their attention can be hard. Did You Know Gaming sometimes gets former/current game developers for interviews and quotes, they might potentially be able to help somehow if they have the right connections.

From costumes, to the logistics of setting up streaming equipment, perhaps someone who worked more closely with the streaming side would know something about it. And while it's a long shot, they might have a copy of the event since it seems like good rep to show to possible clients that the company had Nintendo as a client.

I really wasn't expecting this to go into the world of Shoutcast, Winamp, and internet radio. No info about Slamfest but in general internet radio is such a cool and deep subject - I have so many fond memories of the Zone Radio Network and all their videogame radio stations. Nowadays i think only RadioSEGA and WTMK still exist. Internet Radio is still a thing, with Icecast and Liquidsoap taking Shoutcast's place as the underlying platform, but it's less notable than it was growing up. And of course for video streaming we have Twitch and such but nothing was quite like discovering those old underground TV and radio stations!
