The Lords of Salem: Rob Zombies Most Misunderstood Film
Фильм және анимация
Rob Zombie has made quite the film career for himself over the last eighteen years. Though he may be considered controversial and polarizing to some, one can't deny the man can stir up an emotional response, clearly does what he loves, and doesn't bend to the will of the almighty critic. In today's episode of The Black Sheep, we want to discuss the odd duck in his filmography, the one entry that was a departure in style and tone from what had come before. The Lords Of Salem is his "Rosemary's Baby on acid," as our own, The Arrow describes it, and is so strange and different it just may be his magnum opus. So join us as we dig into why we love Rob Zombie's The Lords Of Salem.

@@epicheavystuff2943watch both the 80’s and the modern versions of Suspiria. That’s the definition of Italian horror and it’s very similar vibes.
This is one of his best films. The coven of three witches in her building (acted superbly) the creepy empty (??) apartment, creepy music; this was a beautifully haunted film.
This is in my humble opinion, Rob Zombies best work. It’s pretty much the only movie I like by him.

It may be his best, definitely the strangest. It is creepy and strange and really doesn't make much sense. However it is atmospheric and effective as a disturbing work. I love Bruce Davison being whacked by a frying pan. Strange film. As opposed to some, I enjoy Sherri's work.
Glad to see this movie get some love. I've enjoyed all of Rob Zombie's films. I get why many younger audiences don't get into them, they've been raised on jump scares and a deluge of found footage, Japanese knock-offs and the Americanized attempts at French extremity. Since horror has always been propped up by ticket sales from that young demographic, his pictures haven't had the impact I think they should have. They seem tailored to the older horror fan who loves suspense, odd creatures, and the general feeling of unease. No one does that unease quite like Argento did and I always felt this movie was Rob Zombie's love letter to the master himself. I've recommended this one to several friends but warn them if they don't like classic horror, as in pre-1990, then it might not be a good fit. I think if you enter any film with the right mindset, you can at least appreciate the work put into it, even if it's not your particular taste. I don't believe in demonic possession, but I still loved the Exorcist. It didn't scare me, but I went in expecting an interesting script, great cinematography, score, and stellar performances. I wasn't disappointed. I went into Lords of Salem knowing Rob Zombie always delivers an interesting throw back to earlier horror styles and I had a fun time watching it.
First of all: I agree with you about theaters. I worked at several at them during the 80's-90's and today's theater going experience can be soured by inconsiderate assholes with phones. Second: I truly love The Lords Of Salem. The cast is excellent and the creeps overload is awesome! That ending just freaked me out!!! I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Judy Geeson and Patricia Quinn a few years ago and I treasure it even more. Finally, props for talking about the novel, which I have, and for the shout-out to the late Sid Haig , Richard Lynch (R.I.P. to both of them. ❤️🌹🙏) and Michael Berryman.
Man I love the Alamo Drafthouse. They make sure others don’t ruin your movie experience. Barely any children. Just how I like it. And Lords of Salem had great atmosphere. The veteran witches are absolutely unsettling. Great actresses.
I was stoned off my ass when I watched this movie in 2012 and I haven't rewatched it since because I'm wholly convinced that seeing it sober would ruin it for me.

Love this movie!!! Saw it late 1 night and thought I was dreaming and became obsessed!
This film is highly undervalued. As horror movie's go, it's a creep factory with satanic madness embracing all involved. The set-up of a week span into the decent is one of my favorite features in the film. Ending on a high note is the cherry on top. Most definitely a slow burn yet anyone that enjoys that in horror like "The Witch" as an example will enjoy this film. Not for everyone either tho. I sure didn't enjoy it as much on the first watch. Now on my top 3 from Rob Zombie.
Halloween 2, The Devils Rejects and Lords are Zombie's best movies. His only truly bad film is 31. He was phoning it in big time with that one.
Whoever dressed the sets and choose the color palate was masterful!
Dude has Ken Foree even aged? I was like "that can't be the same guy from From Beyond, he looks way too young", but it is.
this is the only original rob zombie-movie i like without restrictions.
I love Rob Zombie’s fever dream movies. He is so creative. 🥰
Best review of this film that I’ve ever seen. My favorite Zombie film, glad that somebody else gets it!
The whole opening scene with the low ominous synth playing in the background is what I liked most in particular
The AMC theater near me is mostly always empty. Works perfectly for me.
It’s my favorite of his movies thus far
Thanks posting this on Black Sheep, man - it's such a strange film but I do think it's one of Zombie's best! From it's quieter moments to the anarchy of it's ending, I felt like Rob was writing a love letter to the films from the 60s and 70s that influenced him.
I actually REALLY love this movie... it's story, it's imagery... This movie gives me the creeps...
Its my favorite of his films!
I didn't like it the first time I saw it. The second time I saw it I absolutely loved it. It's such a psychological thriller. It's incredible storytelling.
Oh, Sheri, our love, holds on, holds on
I have seen this once and loved it. I never hear anyone speaking about it but I agree - quite possibly zombies best film.
The music on the record player messed up my equilibrium I will never watch this movie again. And I cherish Rob Zombie
Lords is actually my favourite zombie movie
When I saw the ads for this... I figured he was "Meh I did the other 2 Halloweens Movies, Might as well reimagine 3"
Love the book and the movie, I found most acquaintances loved the first Halloween and Devil's Rejects but didn't have much appreciation for the rest of Robs stuff While I'm not saying it's all flawless I do have a high level of appreciation for all of his movies and music, due to his pure commitment to horror I think the people he polarisises the most fall into two groups, film snobs and general close minded viewers that want crap they know But as a dedicated and open minded horror fan I appreciate Rob very much, House of 1000 Corpses changed my life Thanks for another great video x
This is the only Zombie movie I like and I love movies where the bad guys win. After watching this video I'm in the mood to break the dvd out and watch it now.
This is a great atmospheric slow burn horror movie
Amen to your opening Lance, the movie theater is a "Movie Theater" not a social gathering gossiping texting food snarfing place. I wonder if anyone ever actually SEES a movie anymore... And I thought Lords was a pretty good trip too, being a pretty new Rob Zombie movie fan since I tripped over House of 1000 Corpses a couple of years ago. Awesome, different, fun.

I do enjoy that someone does enjoy this movie. I seen it when it came out in the dead of night & this creepy feeling stuck with me after watching it. I re-watched last year & even though it didn’t stick with me like the first time, it still is visually beautifully haunting. So glad to hear you dug this movie. Too many ppl including supposed Zombie fans tlk shit on it. The ending was soooo badasss! Love the channel.
As a whole… I was upset when I saw it. It was sooo I dunno. Upset for strange truncated ending. I did LOVE the first half and found it to be his most “mature” film making. I think I was upset because I was excited as the movie started and was hoping for a knock out the park. In an interview I heard them say they ran out of money so they guerrilla filmed the rest. For that I forgave him. Knowing that making a movie is fkn hard af. I will give it another watch. The mood at the beginning is honestly. PERFECT.
I am a huge fan of this film. Trippy as all hell.

Lord of Salem sadly became a casualty of that "it's popular to hate a Rob Zombie directed film" thing. This movie was actually a good at drive-in movie experience. So it's kind of refreshing to hear a positive review instead of the usual "hate, rinse, repeat" reviews.
I wanted to like this. I was so excited for a Rob Zombie style occult themed film, but I just feel like the third act gave up. I was with it for the most part, but I can't forgive making me wait just for that not-ending.
This may be Zombie's most complete, realized, cohesive film, imo- it is leaning heavily into Lovecraft's still-unique idiom and favorite themes (Charles Dexter Ward/ The Shadow Over Innsmouth, etc -the theme of the descendant called back to fulfill their Salem-witch ancestor's latterly foiled diabolism... (I also thought the themes of decay(ageing), addiction/ loss of agency)/ Possession... It's more meditative and inward-facing than The Devil's Rejects, H2. I enjoyed how TLOS takes it's time and doesn't rush anything, while not becoming tedious as a result- a difficult trick for any director to pull off, perhaps even harder in R.Z's own idiom/ films (leaning as they tend to on shock and violence, jump-scares, etc.). I was put off by some of the practical effects, in particular at the ending- It felt like being shown the indescribable and unnameable, when they would be far better off, left to the imagination- BUT, even those shock/body horror effects were presented so that the sense of cosmic horror was heightened rather than dulled through possibly inadequate exposure to specific depictions of the forces in play... in the denoumount of fhe film- it shows JUST enough to get the old something-creepy circuits fired up in ones mind, and is very effective that way. Anyway, I'm a huge fan of this flick, and I wish Z would do more in the same style. This film just WORKS well, imo. It feels complete.
Love this movie.
I loved it. Also loved that bedroom.
I'm from Plainfield, so I feel you bro...
This movie is an entire homage to Kubrick's The Shining... my two cents

I remember the first time I saw this and being in awe of all the visuals. I'm a big fan of the sleazy euro trash cinema of the 70s & 80s. I totally got what Rob was going for. All around the film is wholeheartedly HIS vision and it made me appreciate it that much more along with the visual storytelling which just doesn't seem to exist anymore in movies. Thumbs up, Lance! Btw nice shout out to Marcus theater and Music Box! lol I've had some good times there.
You really nailed the current state of the theater going experience. I have to go during the day, while no one is there or risk a bunch of assholes on their phones. A shame too because movies are supposed to be a shared experience. Lords of Salem I avoided for some time, then when I finally caught it I was shocked at how coherent and restrained (for RZ anyway) the script was. Visually I think this is Rob's best work, and it is a shame it didn't get much recognition.
Joliet, IL, REPRESENT!

You should be selling used cars brother. I would NEVER have given this flick a chance after his Halloween 2,but I'm ready to sign on the dotted line for that sweet green 73 Gremlin. 😳😳😳
I thought the "little person" made up like a demon was unintentionally hilarious. Or was it intentional? That loud deep WONG! noise when he appeared and the tentacles that Sheri was working like the ropes at the gym. I was bored with it at that point, but when I saw that I decided to stick around. Was that Warwick Davis?
I need to see this
My favorite RZ film.
I fucking LOVE this film 🤘🏻🖤
It's his best film imo
I've always loved this movie, and I didn't understand why it took so long to gather the appreciation it deserved and garner a worldwide cult following. Certainly for fans of Argento's Suspiria and Deep Red mixed with the atmosphere and paranoia of the original Rosemary 's baby and textures that come right out of the nightmarish scenes of "The Cell".. This movie is a slow infernal descent into the supernatural and might leave you weary of people in your life that you've always thought had the best intentions. There's never a good deed that goes unnoticed, sometimes by the wrong people. A masterpiece. And a great review on the film! Awesome. 👏✌
Ha, I'm from Joliet, IL. too
Yay! In my opinion, this is Rob Zombie's best by far. My friends went to see it without me and were confused, wishing I was there to help them through it. Yes there are some Ken Russel and Dario Argento nods in there but it is also very Hammer and Kubrick conscious too. Ritualistic and hypnotically entrancing, this one really separates the big dogs from the puppies. Do you like to feel melancholy and dread? No. Then watch something fun instead. Simple as that. I don't know what got into Rob to make this one but it makes me very proud because it is aimed at the marginal. I like to sleep with this in the background because hearing Hail Satan repetitively in my subconscious makes me feel so safe and warm!

I first heard about this movie from a production still on Dee Wallace's table at Mad Monster Party 2012. At first, I hated. Now, it's still not my favorite of Zombie's movies but it looks nice.
My anger and thoughts regarding the pieces of shit who disturb others in the movie theaters, this film genuinely reminded me of the great horror classic, "Suspiria"....I suppose it's in the way it's shot...the cinematography and art direction I suppose. And (as I'm reminded watching this video) the presence of Witches!
