Hellraiser Bloodline: Flawed Sequel Is Better Than You Remember
Фильм және анимация
Even as screwed as Hellraiser: Bloodline was from the moment the budget cuts and script changes hit, there is still a great story filled with one of the series' best villains. Like the Assembly cut of Alien 3, you need to look at it from afar and see its intentions and overall purpose. Bloodline is a flawed but fitting end that deserves a second chance!

I saw Bloodline in the theater, and was one of maybe two or three in the audience. Not knowing any of the troubled production behind it, I loved Bloodline. I liked the progression of time from the original John Merchant to the future space station. The new cenobites were terrifying, and the setting was unique. I also liked how Pinhead was no longer in control and was now in danger and he knew it. Overall I still like Bloodline and would have liked seeing the version without any studio involvement.

The new cenobites we're hardly terrifying compared to the originals....they were cartoony like the ones in Hellbound... Angelique looked cool but not terrifying.

I saw it in the theater as well, and even though I knew that it was not as good as the original two, I was a teenager and just excited to see one of my favorite Barker character movies on the big screen. I saw “Hell On Earth” at a drive-in, which I have to admit I really miss as a venue for entertainment. It was totally worth the risk of getting in trouble for sneaking out to see it. I wish that I could have seen “Bloodline” at a drive-in too, but a movie theater was still pretty exciting. Flawed as it was, it was an improvement on #3, and I was really thrilled to see LeMarchand and the Marquis and that whole storyline. I was a big fan of the comics too, and I remember a series of squarebound ones that were, I think, a four issue group called something like “The Book of LeMarchand” or something similar, that were supposed to show parts of his journal, designs, trials of his devices, like test runs and their results, etc. Parts of them were terribly silly, but some parts were awesome, with great artwork, and a lot of it ended up in “Bloodline”. I haven’t watched this movie in over twenty years now, and I think it’s probably time to give it a watch, for old times sake, at the very least. Enjoy your weekend!
By far, Alan Smithee's best work.
There is a fan cut version on KZread that adds some scenes (some deleted, some with choppy animation, some with storyboards) that makes the whole movie flow so much better. Really worth a watch if you are a big fan of the franchise and easy to find with a simple search. It is cut up into chapters in a playlist to make it easy to watch. Honestly, this is one of my favorite Hellraiser films. I'm glad to see this video giving it props. It did wrap up the first 4 films nicely and they should have left it there! Some of the ones after that are just painful to watch. I get the studio was just trying to keep the Hellraiser rights but it still hurts to basically see Pinhead shoved into a detective movie as an afterthought.

I remember seeing this in the cinema as an excited teenager. The look of the movie was fantastic even if it didn't make sense. Doug Bradley, who I met at Mad Monster Party 2012, was great. Plus, it introduced Adam Scott to the world.
I’ve always liked Bloodline. I like the look of the movie, the different settings, and characters. Considering all the drama surrounding it, it makes me wonder how much better the original product could’ve been because what we officially got was still really good in my opinion.
Thank you for giving this movie the credit it deserves. I always felt like it was an underrated sequel and I always liked it better than part 3. Yes, it was a mess clearly due to production, but the story elements were great.

Saw the first 3 in the theater, when I saw prt. 3, I was done. It was so stupid, so when I saw this one I was pleasantly surprised. It's not a perfect movie by a long shot, but entertaining...

@@b.l.fisher8230 yeah part 3 was such an insult to the franchise, trying to ride the trend of characters like what Freddy Krueger became. It's probably the single biggest reason the franchise derailed and unfortunately this film wasn't enough to right the ship. Not many franchises are good but Hellraiser got a raw deal. I'd love to see a new one that could at the very least rival the quality of the second film. I feel like it would have a chance if it wasn't for the owners of the IP just absolutely not caring about it.

I've read Peter Atkins' original script and the movie is more or less the same story with most of the changes being in the first act regarding Angelique and her minions. It's good stuff I wish we could see but I understand how the budget would be a concern. I only watched Bloodline for the first time this year and was pleasantly surprised. And imo should have been the end of the franchise.

It IS the end of the franchise, which is why it was set in the future, so that we could have some more awesome sequels.
Another casualty of Harvey Weiner-Stain! Hellraiser 4, Halloween 6, The Crow 2, Mimic, 54...all hijacked during production by the man currently & deservedly languishing in prison!
Always felt the first four films were the whole story. These four are the original and told the whole story from beginning middle and end

@@leecroft7311 thank you! Wish we see what the original uncut story of the Bloodline was supposed be. I think it still had conclusion to the Hellraiser story. After Bloodline could have told stories between the four films and before them. Get to know more about the other cenobites.
So nice to hear a positive review of this much-maligned movie. I remember watching it when it first came out on VHS and I loved it; I never could understand why it received all the hatred (I get the whole "X in Space" thing, but I thought it was executed extremely well, especially given the 300-year story). I found Hellraiser Inferno to be awesome. Totally awesome. The whole premise of it. We've all thought at one time or another 'did I die and go to hell?' when bad things happen. That movie did a great job bringing that element to life. It's underrated, and I know movies, I know what's good and I've seen it a few times. I rarely do that.

Bloodline has great, arguably some of the best, lines of the whole series for Pinhead. It’s a good effort and I’ve always liked it.
Love me some Paula Marshall. I really like Hell on Earth and Warlock 2 is a masterpiece! Anthony Hickox gave us some awesome horror in the late 80's and early 90's. As for Bloodline, I honestly enjoy the movie despite it's flaws. To me it always had the most potential out of all of the sequels. Even if the original script was never fully brought to fruition I still admire it's ambition. Angelique is one of my favorite characters and I find her to be a lot more interesting than any other female character in the entire franchise. If you had a spin off movie with any character she'd be the one to go with sort of like Pearl from X. Maybe one day we can get a restored version of Bloodline with the cut footage restored and reinserted back into the movie. I Love the Scarlet Box Trilogy set but it saddens me to know that Bloodline was meant to be apart of it and Arrow ditched it. That would've been the perfect time to get a quality restored version of the movie. Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed the video, Lance. Always a pleasure, sir! Keep the great content coming.

This interests me about Warlock 2. I'm such a fan of the original (still have my big box VHS) that I just made an assumption that I wouldn't like the sequel and have just ignored it. So it really is worth a watch then? Think I'll give it a go this weekend then as the lore setup on the first would translate nicely to a sequel, I think I just found out about it in a time when I started getting a bit snobby about movies and crap sequels remakes haha so just never bothered with it.
I love this movie. I would love to see the original kevin yagher cut of the movie.
Glad to see you revisit this one! I always had a sweet spot for 4 ever since I first watched it; it was the first sequel I watched and still honestly the one I re-watch the most. Like you said I agree 100% but despite the mess you can definitely see what it was going for and it shows in spades despite the flaws. I love the changing storyline it added a lot of epicness to the series in the grand scope of things. Due to the edits and all that it gets silly in spots and a majority of the side cast hams it up but it adds to the charm. Ramsey was a solid lead for what he was, and I adore Vargas in this. I still facepalm quite a bit over the fact they ADR'd her which imo was stupid even if they did a great job with it (her voice wasn't that hard to understand honestly.) Much like with Vincent Perez Miramax ruined her chance of an American career she deserved; she was gorgeous then (still is.) I love how they got Kim Myers in it; great way to make her horror legacy more epic. The fan made cut of this is honestly quite fun and it shows what it coulda been. Arrow's idiotic for doing what they did to this; sadly I don't see us ever getting another chance at it :( bummer. Like I mentioned in the last video the faults of this movie is 50/50 more than anything. The Weinstein brothers were idiotic as always but honestly Yagher invited it with how he acted. According to Gary Tunniclife on his Midnight's Edge retrospective interview, he was flat out in over his head more than anything. He took forever to film certain shots and was way behind. He hired a Director of Photography who did more TV and family based work and it shows in the middle section of the movie. A lot of the crew were from Tales from the Crypt. The middle of the film in 1996 was the only real portion he filmed as the director and it's way different than the rest of the movie. It's really bright and in spots it don't look like Hellraiser. I agree with Gary there. The split more or less came down to the fact Kevin was way too slow on the filming and he refused to show Bob Weinstein a cut of what they did of the filmed scenes he did. He claimed a Director's guild rule and Bob more or less was like "cut or no cut your gone." In came Joe Chapelle who was kissing up to them to get a movie deal (he got Phantoms as a result of it.) They brought in a different crew and made everything darker and it looked better. However for their side of the split I do agree Weinstein's are to blame for a lot of this. They should have hired someone who had experience and could handle an epic scope. Kevin as good as he is wasn't right for that job. Plus combined with all the other hardships they had while filming it wasn't a right atmosphere. If they got Stuart Gordon like they wanted I think it would have went more smoother; granted their idiotic desire to force Pinhead in too much was a bad move. When it comes down to it they were dumb to pick Miramax in 1992 for the series rights; I wish New Line would have gotten them instead. They knew horror and were never as bad as Bob and Harvey in terms of interference.
I'm glad you profiled this, i also really liked this entry.
My favorite line of the whole movie: "For God's sakes!". Pinhead: "DO I LOOK LIKE SOMEONE WHO CARES WHAT GOD THINKS?!!!!"
For people interested, in Spain there are "bootleg" versions of the direct to VHS movies up until Hellworld available on BD. And I say "bootleg" because while they most certainly are, for some bizarre reason, they´re allowed to be sold in official stores.
Never saw this movie or anything past the first Hellraiser yet, but I read lots of comics from the 90's and always saw this movies poster being advertised as a kid & always wondered what these movies were about haha Nostalgic AF
This was instantly my favorite when it came out. Your review is spot on. It’s a shame that people would rather fault find a film than look forward what’s good about. There are no bad entries in the Hellraiser series. We need more courageous reviewers who are appreciating sequels rather than snobs trying to be good for everything.
Bloodline is GREAT!! I love origin stories. This movie was a big part of my childhood
I never saw it. However, I really like your argument and passion for it. Yes I'm a 3 guy. But I'm also the guy who says Jason Lives is the best solo Jason film. So tak that, as you will.
i thought the lore from bloodlines was the best part. and the ending was cool, if abrupt. a box that infinitely reflects light was a great idea. would like to have seen the uncut version
Always enjoyed Bloodline. It definitely has that mid 90s horror feel to it, for better or worse. The work print is worth a watch for what could have been.
So happy to hear this movie get some love. I've always loved it and I wasn't sure if it was just nostalgia. The last watchable sequel with a good lore too. Maybe one day the full cut will arrive like the Cabal cut did.
This was the best franchise to go into space, of all the others that tried the same in the 90's. Like Leprechaun, Jason from friday the 13th, Critters, Dracula, and maybe some more that I can't remember right now.
"Rub the box".. Nice......
This is one of my favorite entries and became increasingly appreciated once I learned it got the Alien 3 treatment. I feel this really could have ended the franchise in a good way too. But we know what happens with sequel-itis.
I unfortunately did not see this in the theaters, but had the pleasure of seeing it on cable. Loved it from start to finish. Probably my favorite in the whole franchise. 1 and 2 are always going to be classics, but this one was special.
I remember seeing 3 and 4 as a kid. Loved 3. Definitely saw 4 in the theatre. I liked them both
Saw it in the theater as a young teen. Probably one of 14 people there. I liked it. The connection through time. The mechanic of how the box works. And how the final descendant figured out how to over come Pinhead. It could be seen from the moment the robot holds the box. I loved it. Finally got that bastard and the nightmare/curse was over.
This was my personal favorite in the series The cut footage/work print is my ultimate film “what-if”
as a kid, the Borg from star trek reminded me of cenobites, which is why the Borg frightened me....and just now did I notice from this video that the Borg ship resembles a giant box like the end of bloodline
Awesome slipping Norm in there! Well done 😊😊 “God damn, Fred. That was the worst part of the story!”
I worked with Bruce Ramsey on The Porter. He's a great actor and even more charismatic in person.
Missed seeing this in theaters by one afternoon, myself, but saw this the moment it came out on VHS at the time. It is better than I remember. I agree.
I liked it when it came out but was a little young to fully understand it. rewatched yesterday and i'd it's rough around the edges, but still a great story.
I've always been a Bloodline fan. Couldn't figure out why everyone gave it such crap. It was the last 'good' Hellraiser film. I bet the new film coming to HULU will deliver. Trailer is sick!!!
Love this film! "Such pliant fingers, Toymaker". Love that line.
Sadly never saw in Theater, but 1st from my BF on Laser Disc & you were on the Mark, this is the Last one I own & the perfect ending. Will be watching tomorrow night, thx so much for this most excellent review,.... PS: Hope Someday for a BD restoration to replace my horrible sounding tinny DVD.....

Lance, as a fellow Chicagoan Southsider, I actually had the privilege of seeing this at Marcus Cinema, Chicago Heights, when I was 13 years old. Having seen the previous three films, I completely agree with your review. Even though the movie is severely flawed, a great story is embedded in the film. I enjoyed the film for what it was, and I was able to see past the flaws. I would love to see a restored version of the original Kevin Yeager cut, but as it stands, it is still a good, underrated film that deserves a second look.

Dude... a lot of my childhood was at Western heights theater (and Glenwood single screen)! Warms my heart to hear someone bring it up.
Been saying it for years. Bloodline is underrated as hell.
Will always have a soft spot for Pinhead and the gang. When I was a kid I always kinda thought chatterer looked like a dog and almost kinda cute haha
I lover Deader. The fact that there’s a Pinheaded scene that was cut down by 5 minutes boggles the mind. Please do some kind of video on it. It’s cliche, but there’s some great work at times.
Yes, I really liked the story of bloodline but thought it was not well executed overall, it really should have been longer. I mostly enjoyed part 3, i liked the main characters and the antagonist being a proper successor to Frank Cotton. It was pretty solid until Pinhead went on his rampage and started making cenobites that spit CD's. I was half expecting a toaster-head cenobite to pop out and start slicing people with sliced bread. Pretty much fell apart from that point on. Also, Clive Barker's "Book of The Damned" is a comic from the 90's that gives, in my opinion, a more satisfying backstory for Philip Lemarchand as the evil occultist/inventer who crafts the box himself.
This is an excellent sequel, and for me, it has the definitive ending to the series.
Already preaching to the converted. I liked it when it came out. I've always enjoyed entries 1, 2, and 4.
The first four were good to great. Bloodline, imo, is the best of the sequels. I believe it would have been better if it were three movies instead of crammed into one. They could have taken their time telling the stories having it fleshed out more.
Getting to know the detailed history and backgrounds of The BOX is even more de-mystifying to me than having a CD shooting Cenobite.
I agree wholeheartedly. Definitely where the series should have ended, prior to a reboot (if needed, but without Bradley and Carpenter, I don't see it working).

Love this 1 and the 2nd I switch my mind which is my favorite between the two on how I feel that day. I always looked at this as the end of pinhead and every movie after this taking place before the space portion of this movie
I loved this movie, I sae it in the theater twice!! I still like it, it just could have been AMAZING!
I enjoyed this movie. As people said it was awful, I saw a lot of potential in it.
If the movie would have been 2 and a half hrs like it was supposed to be. It would have been good. It's really 3 movies in a short 90 min movie
I would have preferred the scarlet box set include Bloodline over Hell on Earth. It's by far the better movie.
Great way of putting it. And while Bloodline continues directly from 3 you could still skip it. Watch from Inferno to Hellworld (or not include this one) and the finish it with Bloodline. In fact, I´ll do that once I own all these movies on BD.
This video title is something a daft person would say. Bloodline is so bad it ensured no Hellraiser sequel would get a theactrial release again. It insulted the intelligence of fans by breaking the mythos rules and cheated us out of having a decent Angelique story via studio interference.
This is why I only acknowledge 1 through 4. Bloodline's ending wrapped it up nicely.

Watched it 2 nights ago and agree with you 💯... Bloodlines is a great entry
I know it's a taboo subject (which in itself if kinda fitting), but this is the kind of movie that deserves to be remade as an anthology miniseries. Take the original script and re-adapt it, taking more time with each time period, and each iteration of Merchant.
Cant wait for the new reboots
I thought the high concepts and the bloodline story was absolutely fantastic and this sequel crushes. Full points to Kevin Yagher.
Actually i never understood why #4 is considered bad. In my humble opinion its features really interesting story which doesnt overstay its welcome. Yes, "space" part is kinda meh, way too cheesy, death of pinhead isnt convincing at all, but movie overall is more then watchable. I thing i would put it even higher then second one. Things definitively gone downhill since then, but first 4 movie is worth watching even today.

Why is Pinhead metallic green on the cover? It's like the imagination slowly got sucked out of this series and all they could do was change his colour.
I'm not going to complain about your liking and supporting this movie. It was a great idea and would have been a perfect ending if better done. On the other hand, I am going to ask you to take off your rose-colored glasses. "These days, they'd just remake them." Allow me to point out - The Fly, The Blob, The Thing, and Cat People all come to mind quickly, with Omega Man and Invasion of the Body Snatchers being remakes done in the 70s and Night of the Living Dead was remade in 1990. Keep in mind that remakes have been a common Hollywood thing pretty much since movies began.

Remember that's the years of the Blockbusters. Nobody was really watching horror movies like that. I liked bloodline better than hell on earth cause the original darkness of pinhead was back.
Imagine the box being the origin of the Borg...
When I first seen this I thought the same thing. Good way to end it. But the scenes all looked to short which they were. 111 minutes vs 84 minutes, do you think the original version 111 minutes will be on DVD some day ?? A longer version would have made the fans freak hell ya instead of hell no !! Lastly, at least now we all know where Star Trek can up with the idea of a Borg Ship !! 👍
