Ok i HAVE to tell this little anecdote. I went and saw The Lorax in theaters when it came out. I bought a bottle of soda and wanted to dispose of the empty container after drinking it. I looked around for a recycling bin and couldn't find one so I asked someone who was sweeping up. He told me the had put the bin away so they could put up the display for The Lorax and that I would have to just put it in the garbage. Does anyone else see the irony of this?

The onceler in the original 1970s version is not evil, just misguided. The Onceler and the other people’s faces are never shown, which is perfect for explaining that anybody who is shortsighted can destroy the environment

The problem with Dr. Seus books is that they are too short to work in film. The reason Horton hears a Who workers so well is because the story is light hearted enough to work as a comedy, kinda? With the Grinch and the Lorax that's MUCH HARDER!!!!!!!!

This hurts even more when you see the concept art and original material. It was meant to be a much darker movie more akin to the old 2d animated movie, with a badass rock opera villain song. And Illumination, in all their infinite wisdom, played the 'It's too dark for kids' card. Thank you minions. Thank you SO much.

Ironically, saying that making the movie dark would be “too much for kids” is literally just bullshit. Kids absolutely love horror and dark themes, just look at the history of fnaf or undertale both games with heavily detailed lore and violent stories that would already be disturbing to an adult. Kids can handle dark themes, but illumination can’t

Here's a fun fact, recently released was a deleted song from the movie that would've helped the message better. It's called, "biggering." It was the demo for, "How Bad Can I Be?" It shows greed slowly consuming the Onceler, rather than him being manipulated by his family, and it captures the emotion the story had. It's longer than the other song, is a rock song, and includes one or two lines from the original animated Lorax and even makes lines from the other song work better. Amazing how one song can help a films message, and it's replaced with the more dumb downed version.

A bigger desk, a bigger staff, A bigger hat to wear Because I'm biggering, I'm figuring I'm biggering, And biggering is triggering More biggering Nostalgia Critic: Hey, listen up, meathead. I'm going to say this once, and I'm not gonna repeat it. Greed... ya see, it's like a little pet, alright? And the more and more and more that you go and feed it, The more hungry it'll get! But... you know, you really can't blame greed No, that's stupid. You see, it's gotta worm inside. Oh yeah, that's right. It's one that always needs to feed, And it is never satisfied. You get it? But the more you try to find it, The more it likes to hide. Now listen--that is NASTY little worm. And I like to call it "pride." See, now that's why you're biggering! Listen here, idiot! I'm figuring on biggering! But that biggering's just triggering more biggering! Got that? Alright! Illumination: There is a principle of nature, That most every creature knows, It's called survival of the fittest, And this is how it goes The animal that wins has got to Claw and kick and punch. The animal that doesn't Winds up someone else's lunch A company's an animal, That's trying to survive, It's struggling, and fighting, Just to keep itself alive I must keep biggering, I'm figuring I'm biggering, Though biggering is triggering more biggering. I won't stop! Biggering, I'm figuring I'm biggering, And biggering is triggering more biggering And the customers are buying, And the money multiplying And the PR people lying And the lawyers are denying, Who cares if some things are dying? I don't wanna hear your crying! This is all so gratifying...

Turns out there was a song for The Once-ler that was much better at showing his evil side. It was called Biggering, and was the original How Bad Can I Be. It was much more slow, and had the Once-ler admit he never needed to be big, he just needed a cottage and he’d be fine, but he wants bigger thing. It also has a Lorax solo moment where he explains greed and pride. The reason it wasn’t shown in the movie was because children would be to scared by it... Oh who are they kidding, it hit too close to home.

I do love Cumberbatch as an actor, but I felt like the writers could've done more with him or have another actor that would actually make the grinch actually terrifing. At least Carrey's grinch was actually terrifing and looked like the live action version of Seuss's Grinch short in the 60's.

I'd like to hear your thoughts on original plans for The Lorax that were scrapped due to corporate interference. The demo tracks from the soundtrack flesh out the characters a lot more for just the few extra minutes they give. For instance, Ted was originally supposed to be obsessed with getting a new product called a "whosit" and Thneedville was supposed to be much more obviously dystopian. I think it would be awesome to have a sort of mini-fanscription or even just a short editorial on what The Lorax COULD have been but sadly wasn't.

At 8:23, when the scene with the Once-ler transitions to his younger self, I thought of this idea that could’ve made this movie much more interesting: What if, instead of the focus on the Once-ler at the window, the camera focuses on Ted, sitting there, looking up, and *THEN* you transition into the younger Once-ler, making it look like Ted filling in the Once-ler’s shoes (thus the audience as well) as he’s telling the story of what happened to the trees. Then there’s another idea that came up when @ 12:23 the Once-ler mentions about the “breakdancing and Donkey Kongs:” With the one idea above, this would make much more sense that there would be music played (and how the Once-ler dressed that way), because this story would’ve been all inside Ted’s mind as he listens to the story. This would make sense because Ted could represent the young generation watching this story unfolding.

08:05 “My God! We finally found Bill Watterson!” XD After seeing Joshscorcher’s recent Top 10 Non-Disney Villain Songs, I found out that there was going to be a song that had the Once-Ler in a more tragic light, talking about what he’s doing is wrong yet still does it anyway. It was in the style of a rock opera which definitely would’ve kind of improved this movie’s message while being in the same spirit and ambiguity of the original cartoon and book. Unfortunately, this is Illumination we’re talking about, which being known for being greedy and sugarcoating anything, removed it and replaced it with “How Bad Can I Be?”. Irony is such an understatement there. 🤦‍♀️ Strangely, the unused song is on the official soundtrack for some reason.

I disagree; I take the "Confused Matthew" perspective on Anakin Skywalker in the Prequels, namely that he was a self-important and violent person from Day 1 and the error was inducting him into the Jedi Order in the first place. He should have started as a Sith. The character of Anakin that Obi-Wan discusses with Luke in Episodes IV-VI has never been seen on film, except perhaps in the Clone Wars series.

How that could've made the movie more timeless: 1. Cut out O'Hare and the Corporate bad guy plot. 2. Keep "Let it Grow" and "How Bad can I Possibly Be", but cut out the rest of the pop songs, and instead substitute the blanks with the songs from the original 1970's film, like "For he's a Jolly good Onceler." 3. Make the story about Ted, the boy, living in this dystopian wasteland, polluted by smog. He sees theses old paintings and images of trees carved in ruins, and that's what sparks his interest. Audrey can be just be like, a classmate. 4. Cut out the Pop Culture Jokes. 5. Change the Onceler's personality, make him someone who wants to make money because he had a poor childhood, and thus wants more out of his life, and make a name for himself, but gets a little carried away with his Productivity. And 6. Leave the Ending Ambiguous. Like in the book.

While I agree with this incarnation not being the best, the change in the Onceler isn’t exactly too hard to believe, especially since he was designed to be a young hipster. He receives all the peer pressure from family, people sucking up to him, and success. Young people are especially susceptible to the opinions around them, and can be very willing to do whatever, as long as they continue to receive praise and success from it. They believe that what they’re doing isn’t wrong, and as long as their followers are happy, they think they’re going down the right direction, and reject criticism and advise as hate and jealousy.

It's crazy that Illumination had all the right pieces to make an honest, ground-breaking animated film, but they just couldn't follow through. It wasn't because they lacked the talent. It wasn't because they lacked the funds. It was because they lacked the desire. They sacrificed artistry just to make a safer product. Not a film. A product.

Well that Donkey Kong line in this movie means a lot more than you think. You see, little did we know at the time, the Onceler’s line about playing the Donkey Kongs was a small in movie hint of Illumination’s next big future project. Which would later be revealed to be the Super Mario Bros. Movie. That would feature Donkey Kong as one of the main characters. And before long, 11 years later in 2023 last year, we would get just that with the release of Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. With Seth Rogan as the voice of Donkey Kong.

Another thing-there were quite a few unused demo’s of songs in the track, and based on what I saw, there was an original idea for the movie about the dangers of letting your pride and jealousy of others getting to you. Too proud to realize you don’t need more than everyone else, too jealous of others to be truly satisfied with what you have.
