The Long Trail: Day 19 (Summit Day)
Hazen's Knotch Camp to Canada.
My Book Info:
Pushing North: Tame the Mind, Savor the Journey www.amazon.com/dp/B0997DNRXF/...
This book tackles the mental struggles humans face when on long-distance and long-duration events like a thru-hike. There is a lack of mental literature focused on our hiking community and this book will help fill the gap.
If you are like me, I read books like "Appalachian Trials" by Zach Davis before my hike. It was awesome and helped tremendously, but we need even deeper perspectives to increase the success rate of aspiring thru-hikers. 75 percent don't make it and their mental chaos, I argue, is the biggest reason.
This book is a must for every human faced with tough challenges in their lives (AKA all of us). It will help you gain awareness of what is happening in your mind and why. It will also give you the tools to control the chaos and find more fulfillment in the journey.

I appreciate your consistent positivity! It always brightens my day to read! 🤘🕓
ER- Congratulations on finishing. Don’t ever underestimate how encouraging your videos are to some of us. I look forward to your next journey.
Praise The Lord.. thankful for your safe journey… so proud of you and for you.. I am so proud to be related to you.. I talk about you (especially when you are on trail) about your hiking journey…. You are such an encouragement.. but your wife is just as encouraging.. not everyone has the support system that you do.. without her you wouldn’t be able to hike the trails with as much “ease” of mind of the things of home.. she is definitely a blessing.. very strong woman… (would love to meet her sometime… hint hint) Enjoyed the journey with you. Thanks for taking us along!!! Get some much needed rest!!! Sherri
Completing the Long Trail is a heck of an accomplishment. Congrats. That trail is SOOOO much harder than it looks on KZread!!! Great advice that you shared for others considering a hike on the LT.

Hey ER, John Phelps here. Been a long, long time since I’ve seen you. I’m an avid hiker and came across your videos! Love them! Just ordered your books to read. Keep it up 👍🏻
Excellent!! Glad I’m not the only one who gets choked up when I accomplish something big. 🦑
Inspirational ER! Thanks for talking us along on this adventure.

Outstanding sir! Thanks for sharing! It’s been a joy to follow you over the years. I appreciate your thoughts and insights on life as well as trail life. I have enjoyed the Books. Great work! 🇺🇸 Might be the year for the Dawgs!
Fantastic series ! Congratulations man ! Learned a lot from you, thank you. Most if not all of my backpacking is in the whites, I want to do the LT in a few years when I retire. Thanks again for your efforts ! And your service to our country.Cheers
I am sure you got used to no switchbacks on the AT in NH. South Moosilauke, South Kinsman, Wildcat and Cater Notch come to mind. Congratulations on "Sumiting"! You videos brought back great memories of my end to end. WIDG
Your summit video convinced me to hike the LT; and confirmed why I’ve viewed your videos since the AT. Iceager
I remember sobbing as I watched your AT summit video. You are such an inspiration and I thank you for your strong kind Spirit. Enjoy your time in town and safe travels back home. Until the next hike...
Got to be a good feeling to finish! Awesome journey! Thanks for bringing it to us. Congrats! Happy hiking!!
Wonderful journey! Can't wait 'till your next one!
Congratulations!!!🥾🥾⛺️
Congratulations 🎊 👏, thanks for putting out inspiring work. I ran on the tredmill every minute of your LT adventure.
Sounds like pa no switchback’s… congratulations on the journey…Hell Yah
Thank you so much for taking us along--AGAIN. Loved seeing the border! I wonder when the customs and immigration guys show up. You had a great day (other than atop Jay's Peak--though that was great in its own way) for your last day on this trail.
Congratulations! I have really enjoyed following along with you on this journey! We are about the same age and can relate to what it takes to keep our bodies going lol I have done the LT NOBO and SOBO (section hike) and it is no joke! Thanks for sharing!! Peace ✌️
Congrats lil brother! So very cool to watch and see a little bit of fall through your views. That trail looked hard, but you overcame! Another trail sign is ordered and will be on its way to add to your collection. Awesome videos!

Thanks sis. I'm so excited to get it. Such a cool gift to keep adding new trails too. I will post a pic of it to show people when the new sign gets here!!🤘🕓
Congratulations! Another great video as well as another great accomplishment!
I've snowboarded down that...looks a LOT different in the winter ;)
Congratulations, ER, on another trail to add to your list. I've felt honored to be one of those watching to see you every step of the way, good and bad times. I think I'm going to need to revisit other trail vids, now that I've had the opportunity to complete both books. I saw how you applied what you've learned about yourself every step of the way on this trail. I thank you for sharing your insights into what makes you tick, and how to recognize it in myself. I hit the Art Loeb trail this weekend. Going SOBO there based on your recommendation. Glad you finished, glad you got home. Understand you're out recruiting again. Best of luck with that enterprise. See you down trail .

@@EarlyRiser71 Footnote post-trail. ER, you were absolutely right. Art Loeb kicked my ass but good :). I had a great time.
Thouroughly enjoyed this hike! I love your philosophy to LIVE your life. I know my upcoming thru hike pales in comparison to the ones you have made, but I learned so much about how to enjoy my hike. I just can’t wait! (I am a new backpacker about to hike the Foothills Trail in SC)
Outstanding brother! Proud of you….when you pushed on past the shelter to finish, I so related to that. I can’t wait until I get the opportunity to do this same hike.
Congratulations on your Long Trail Hike!! 💪
❤loved this journey and your inspiration!
Zero bar, the best.
Vermont doesn't really "do" switchbacks, lol. Congratulations!! I know that trail was tough!
PCT! PCT! PCT! PCT! PCT!
Congratulations ER! Inspiring, simply inspiring!

Congratulations! Take the road less taken. Thanks for the encouragement!
Thank you so much for sharing. I watched your entire AT hike and this was even better. For us we want it to go on for a while but for you and your family it's time to get home. ER much respect to you and your family and once again thank you.
Congrats, E.R.! Well done! Thanks so much for sharing your journey and wisdom with us. 👍😎
Thank you once again for allowing me to follow your journey, You continue to inspire me to push on. Thank you brother

The video game was as strong as the LT! Great story that will be of great value for those doing the LT as well as some great learning for any other long hike. Thanks ER!
Nothing like catching day 19 first, Awesome!!! Congrats! Now I go watch 1 - 18! Great video and advice! New hiker North Western Maine!
congratulations
Congratulations on a spectacular hike. I've thought of trying that trail but I think I'll take your suggestion and try a section of the northern area to try seeing I'm totally new.
Congratulations! I'm (once again)going to try to thruhike the LT next year. Section hiking it in the 90s wasn't enough. Having my calf muscles tear in 2020, not a deterrent. I hiked the southernmost 274 miles of the AT, plus the Approach Trail and Grayson Highlands in one trip this spring, so I should be able to thru it, and the AT in 2022, when I turn 70. My final section is planned for next spring. Then I can decide what to tackle after that 😁. Glad that you made it. Whitecap was gnarly coming south! Straight down! Tree rain in the clouds is known as Water vapor deposition, the main reason that the Green Mountains are green. Laura Woodward Shelter is in a big mud pit. At least when I was there 23 years ago and now, when you passed through. I passed by it last year without noticing it. Everything was wet then, too. Final day at the B&B...Brownie and Beer at Journey's End Camp. Agreed. It's a nice camp! 👍✌💪
Congratulations ER ✌️

Congratulations man. You so remind me of a young version of the old man with your insanely early reveille. I hope you’re able to do the CDT one day. I love your videos so much I’m going to read your book lol. At ease bro!

@@EarlyRiser71 Yeah me too was nice to meet you 👍. I’m now prepping for next years trip. Your rawness in your videos tell it like it is…appreciate keeping it real!
Well done, ER! FWIW, I'm more impressed that I hiked the LT after watching your vlog of the LT! Hah hah! Also, so much good advice in your vlog. Oddly enough, I was laid off, from my job of 13 years, last week. Of course, like any backpacker, I just spent 8 days in the woods of Northern NH! I might just call this early retirement (I'm 60), or find a super fun job that is both rewarding and aligns well with my ideals. So many possibilities! The future is wide open. Looking forward to your next hike! Deuces!

Sometimes it takes the universe to nudge us hard in the right direction. Love that you are seeing it as an opportunity. That's the first step to freedom from the Matrix. 🤘🕓
I watched your AT videos and now I'm watching these. I just ordered both of your books. Do you have any other suggested books about breaking free from the "Matrix" or the like? My mind is chaotic as hell. I'm a pretty happy guy, but I do spend time worrying about the past and anxious about the future. You are an inspiration man!
You’re such an inspiration and your calm demeanor plus positive encouragements make me really listen to what you’re saying. I have a question, how do you know when you got your kit dialed in? I’m new so of course I don’t know yet.
@EarlyRiser71
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment. Your kit is dialed in when you open your pack every day and don't have anything inside that you don't use daily. Rain gear and maybe a warmie layer in the winter are the only exceptions. Also, your kit is as lightweight as you can afford. Every extra ounce/pound has a direct effect on the mind and body. 🤘🕓
Is there a way I can contact you to ask a couple of questions?
ER is it time for another thru hike?
