    I love how every time he dies, his expressions are showcasing his fear, or when he cries for real, they don’t make him out to be a pretty boy. Really humanizes him in my opinion. We’re reminded he’s just a really normal dude with an unnatural determination.

    Idk if you're a LN reader so spoilers: Betelguese back story is so depressing, witch of vainglory forced him to take on the authority of sloth which he has no affinity with whatsoever leading to the destruction of his mind and spirit, since he is a soul the authority will keep destroying him from the inside out eternally all to protect Emillia's family cause he had a relationship with her mom and all for it to end by taking the life of his lover under the pretext that he was attacking the enemy, and after he realized he was fooled by vainglory, the witch used her powers on him making him go even more crazy which resulted to the villain we see in the first season

    Subaru isn’t lonely he always has the Witch watching over him. Edit: I already know about the whole “Satella and Envy” thing but the fact of the matter is....... It isn’t cut. Just because the Anime is based off of the LN does not mean it fully follows it the same way and thus what appears “cut” is just moved to a different point. Each Anime episode has to reach a certain point in the story, if it doesn’t have room to fit something then it can be cut but something as important as Satella and Envy is too important to be cut and thus it will eventually come, this plot point literally explains so much about her character.

    GamingShadowCat Um what? The Witch is Satella (I’m referring to whose body the Witch is in, a split personality is still the same person but acts differently. If Satella has an entirely different entity within her then it is not a split personality.) If Envy is just a split personality than Satella is still responsible, If Envy is a different person than Satella is not responsible. That is the difference, a different entity is not just a personality, it is a completely separate person, you don’t define a separate person as a “personality” let alone a “split personality.” Anyways, we even seen glimpses of her trying to speak with Subaru, she even lip syncs “I Love You” to Subaru.

    Well satella loves Subaru, and it’s possible Subaru loved her back. They cut this out in the anime, but in season 1 where Betelgeuse invades Subaru, you know how he yells he can return to death so he can see the witch? Well she hugs Subaru, and Subaru gets a huge urge to hug her back. So it’s entirely possible Subaru loves Satella, but his memory was taken.

    @@seanduffy8746 That would be interesting. It would make a little sense given that a) it was the first timeline before any resets happened and b) I can't really think of any better reasons why Emilia would lean into her resemblance of Satella like that. Puck being with her is a bit of a hole in that idea, though - I've actually had my own theory that Satella was a lot like Emilia in that they were shunned and mistreated by society through no initial fault of their own. While Emilia stays strong for the most part, Satella wasn't and ended up cracking from the isolation and lashing out with her power.

    This is one great insight on the topics ReZero explores. There's an old Russian film "We'll live till Monday", that shows a life of a Soviet school teacher. The children are tasked to write a composition on "What is Happiness". While everyone in the class write pages describing their understanding of Happiness, one boy puts it simple "Happiness is when you are understood." Subaru craves being understood. That is why taking Rem away was important for the story - to force Subaru to confide in others, not just a single special person. In order to learn to fly one needs to learn to walk first.

    Subaru is the greatest protagonist there is because he has 3 important things. 1. Traits and issues that relate to almost anyone, but especially seasoned anime watchers and weeaboos. Loneliness, depression, mental stress, almost anyone whos has gone through life has dealt with something of the sort, and the fact Subaru has these, especially in Isekai where protagonists are blank, projectile slates, is incredibly enrapturing. 2.Believability. Anyone can see Subaru and think "Yeah, he's a person! I feel like I've met someone like this or have been this person!" Subaru isn't just a character, he feels like a true person. That makes you like him and resonates with him SO much more. 3. A similar goal to everyone. He wants to be a better person. No one who reads this comment can go and say they don't want to be a better person, or at the very least, have never wanted to be a better person. So seeing Subaru have a goal EVERYONE has had or does have is incredibly impactful. Other Isekai protags have goals like "save the kingdom" or "get the girl(s)." but Subaru's is one as simple as "Stop being a PoS." That simple goal is so believable and reasonable that anyone can connect to it, and love Subaru as he goes towards that goal.

    I prefer him to many underdog main characters, even the well written ones like Gon from Hunter x Hunter. Most of them have either special abilities or were given hidden abilities from the start and no matter the adversary, they often succeed, although it doesn't happen that often with Gon. Subaru is almost powerless without him working together with even more people. He loses in many situations quite more often, and aside from being one of the most relatable, he is also one of the most realistic characters in anime.

    Agreed, the fact that Subaru is the only one who remembers what happens after each death but he can't even communicate what he's going through to the ones who support him. The way Re: Zero handles is phenomenal because we get a full close up on the mental and physical toll dealing with his loneliness. And when you're alone you have to "fight" all your heavy burdens by yourself. That's not easy, it can take a great deal of mental fortitude, and you may fail. However, if you can push past all that struggle what you'll find is growth. As an individual, that to me is very important. Great video.

    Holy shit... This is it! The video on Re:Zero of words I could not express, or should I say word: Loneliness. Practically everything I felt from Re:Zero was expressed perfectly here. From the loneliness to topics like depression and what he went through to become a better person. On a personal note, Re:Zero came out at a perfect time and I watched it with people that I myself put my emotions to unfairly, not because I thought they could help me but because I needed someone to lean on at the time. You see, my girlfriend of 7 months suddenly and almost without warning killed herself. I had plenty of things to keep my mind off that fact but deep down I wanted to kill myself. I almost did too, I went to a like with weight in my jacket and I was fully intending on swimming to the bottom of the lake and grabbing onto the bottom and NEVER LETTING GO but I didn't. With the support of a gaming friend thousands of miles away, I didn't... A week later I discovered Re:Zero and marathoned it with those people I latched onto because I had no support in real life. But I caught up to Ep 15 (Yes.. that episode) And like my own life, I thought this show as over... but it wasn't, I wasn't over... I continued this show and found something to keep me going and 4 years later, I am still here! Less lonely because I know, somewhere, my feelings were understood. Perhaps not exactly, but I took comfort in the fact that the loops Subaru went through were way worse then the cycles they went through. Anyways, Thank you to those who have listened to my rambles. I hope my story may reach someone and let them know that it's okay to be depressed when something bad happens and that healing and support comes with time and from places you least expect it. I would also say that theres a really cool dude in Australia that saved my life when I least expected it! Edit: I would also like to say that I will be following this channel because this was just an excellent video essay!

    This was a series that I hated watching from start to finish. Not because I didn't enjoy the concept or anything like that, but because I empathize with Subaru so strongly. Just watching this video and having things perfectly described brought me to the verge of tears because the hardest part of loneliness is the feeling or knowledge that no one can understand your issues. The story is definitely no for the faint of heart both due to its themes and the gruesome portrayals of certain events. I feel the most telling thing that wasn't described in this video is the fake optimism that Subaru always puts on in front of others until he is so broken that he is physically and mentally unable to, a trait that is common in people with depression, anxiety, and loneliness whether conscious or not. It's also because of this that, to me, Subaru is one of the most human characters I have seen in media ever, and is also why I probably empathize with him so much besides the other issues.

  • @CaseNumber00
    @CaseNumber003 жыл бұрын

    In forums and such, you come across people who say its a shit story or Sabaru is a whiney bitch but the problem is not always a story's, in this case Re:Zero's, fault you dont like it or hate it, its you. I am not saying those people are bad people but they they lack certain experiences and feelings to understand Re;Zero, or in this case, empathy. Again, I dont mean they are bad people but they lack a characteristic to put them in Subaru's shoes and understand his torment, his pain, his loneliness, his outbursts, and his sadness. I believe those people never went though a bad experience. When I say a bad experience, I dont mean mom forgot to pick them up from school once or twice or didnt get the job or didnt go to the university they wanted, I mean they really never experienced something to shatter their understanding of life and suffered to varying degrees, they never had a trauma. I believe the best people to like the Re;Zero and understand Subaru generally are those who have suffered a trauma. If you had a go happy life, rarely having hardships, you would probably see Sabaru, even other characters such as Shinji from EVA, as some irrational person, why is he doing this convoluted thing while this direct method would solve his problem. People of trauma often learn of alternative methods and behaviors to cope with their pain which, while making perfect sense to them, would not make much sense to others. This is what I think of why people resort to shit talking of Re;zero, or any story for that matter, and go beyond simple constructive criticism- you need some context and experience to understand and emerse yourself in the story. Frankly, those naysayers just dont have the experience for Re;Zero.

Even though Subaru is a fictional character, he gives inspiration to keep going through the suffering. He reminds me to keep loving those around me. honestly? ok, I'm thinking something that could REALLY make him break could be something like... watching his friends get tortured in killed, even in 'other ways'. or he himself tortured in 'other ways', which could humiliate him so much he breaks. I don't want it to happen, don't get me wrong. But at this point? I honestly think the author just might do that. Kind of like how SPOILER: his first kiss was stolen by crazy emilia, and he can't get it back. What if it was his first time, instead? Once again, I really hope not. But It could happen. Tappei is cruel.

It's about experiencing horrible things, but accepting what you are, and that it's okay to make mistakes. That life is a struggle, but if we struggle the "right" way, it can even become beautiful and poetic :) I wish you all the best!

    I can relate to Subaru's loneliness. I used to be very sensitive and would tear up whenever someone calls me down or physically harm me. Got bullied during elementary school alot through I did fight back during high school, but the verbal abuse still hurt. Didn't help that I lived with 3 foster brothers and 3 foster sister's, who most of them I never got along with. Lived out in the sticks with them and all the physical and verbal abuse was dealt with alone. Went through loads of depression and suicidal thoughts, though my beliefs in region had me not act on those thoughts as I was afraid of what would happen in death. All though, all those things strengthen my resolve in things. Now I hardly ever get sad when things turn for the worse. Can't even cry even if I wanted to and I even tried to produce tears. My sadness would last for a few seconds only to either become confused or frustrated, to just moving on. Verbal abuse doesn't bother me or even less phase me, I find them amusing or hilarious. I'm quite calm in physical confrontations and been exposed to crazy shit happening in the streets. Whenever something unfortunate as like if I miss the last bus home (happend on several occasions) which is a two or 3 hour walk depending on how I physically or mentally feel, I just think "Oh well, at least I'm not the only person in this world who dealt with this situation. I'll likely deal with shit in the near future, it's unfortunate but I can't stop it so I may as well just bear it and move on". Dealing with those things changed me alot and what I like about Re:Zero is that I really understand and sympathize with Subaru Natsuki and feel like I really relate to his loneliness and suffering. Which is one of the reasons why this is among my favorite animes out there.

    I think episodes 13 to 18 describe a sorta different kind of loneliness. Or rather, a different feeling of despair. Loneliness in the fact that his problems and horrors in these episodes are ones he can only face head on, not because noone can understand him, but rather, because everyone is dead. And on episode 15, after he watches Rem’s horrifying death and hear Rem’s dying words, subaru is the only one left, to wander through the entrance of the mansion, bodies everywhere, knowing that the ones dearest to him are among them. And as a colossal being towers over him and the mansion, we get a piece of an amazing soundtrack, as subaru wastes away. And then he wakes up again. The worst part about his return by death is the fact that almost every time he dies, he has to watch someone he loves fall with him. Thanks for reading my aimless ramble, good video by the way, this show is amazing.
