The Lion King Pitch Meeting

Step into the Pitch Meeting that started Disney's classic The Lion King! Subscribe for more Pitch Meetings: / @pitchmeetings
Disney’s original Lion King movie from 1994 is one of the most beloved animated kids movies of all time. It made so much money that Disney is making it again! This time in “live-action” which essentially means very good CGI. Although the original is a classic and characters like Simba, Nala, Mufasa, Zazu, Scar and more are iconic now -- the movie isn’t without its questionable moments. Like what’s up with Scar controlling the weather? Why is the brother-sister romance so… romanticized? Why are lions even kings? To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to The Lion King. It’s super easy, barely an inconvenience.

I always took the "I can't wait to be king" song as high-lighting Simba's naivete. He doesn't really understand what he's asking for as he's just a selfish child.

Kings can step down and pass on the throne willingly though right? 🤔 Genuine question, I feel like that's a thing but I'm not too sure.
@snorgardark1908

@@wayneb6583 They are king, they can do what they want. Lion wise when Simba got strong enough he'd just run Muffasa off, after he himself was ran off as male lions tend to do as the young males get older. Since it is Disney once he got old he likely step down. Either way Simba was a child and didn't think about what has to happen to become king, only one day he will be king which is common with kids.

I also kind of presumed that he figured his Dad would just...retire. Just a kid on a power trip that wants all the authority. Not thinking about the baggage that comes with it or whether his father would be alive at that point.

i remember as a kid watching this movie in the 90s i didnt fully understand that mufasa had to die for simba to become king so the thought behind the song never caught my attention. only thought it was a good song with a beat beat to it. but after being more grown up you begin to realize what songs can mean in a different way. back then the song was just a good song and you cheered simba on and was like i cant wait for that to happen. not fully understanding what has to happen 1st. in my eyes there could be 2 kings. simba and mufasa. didnt know there could be only 1

I think the implication of Just Can't Wait to be King was that Simba didn't fully understand death, or the idea that a king can die. Zazu says "What you don't realize--" before he's cut off. That's probably the intent, but logically speaking it wouldn't actually have that effect- its far more likely that scar just got unlucky and had a long draught during his reign. Producer Guy: Oh, giving your child a terrible name is TIGHT! I'm planning to name mine "Idiot". Screenwriter Guy: Whatever floats your boat. Producer Guy: Why give him an English name, though? Shouldn't his name be "Kovu" or something? Screenwriter Guy: Well, I tried that, but I thought it would work better applied to a future character in the sequel. Producer Guy: Sequel? Screenwriter Guy: Yeah, this movie will hopefully make both of us a lot of money. Anyways, I also thought giving the villain the most obviously evil name ever would work for the audience. Producer Guy: Man, imagine that applied to other Disney villains. I would take Ursula more seriously if her name was actually Hag. Screenwriter Guy: Wait until you get a load of the hyena names. Producer Guy: What do you mean? Screenwriter Guy: I originally thought of making them all sound exotic, but I threw my intern a bone by naming one after him. Producer Guy: What do you mean? Yeah, I thought the energy level was quite low and wondered if Ryan was sick. Then I kept getting déĵà-vu and realised it was an old one, lol.
The line about Nyla’s coke n get it eyes was great….honestly in hindsight that animator was both extremely talented and creepy

Why is it creepy? It's the artists job to convey meaning.

@@nathanhaynes2856 Then s/he should've had Nala "present". You know - butt up, tail in the air. That would telegraph it much clearer.
“It must be great to see his sister again” is crazy 😂
I think the reason Scar let Simba run awat instead of killing him then and there as a child is maybe because, at that time, Simba liked Scar, so Scar didnt want Simba to get the impression that he is actually evil. That might have ruined his plan. If Scar tried to kill him then and there and Simba managed to escpe, he would already know the true identity of Scar. But since Scar asked Simba to run first, Simba wouldnt know that it was Scar who sent the hyenas to kill him
Even re-runs of pitch meetings are tight !!!
4:20 It never occurred to me til just now, but that same thing happens in 'Excalibur' (1981).
3:43 Oh Boy, You and I are gonna get it on Brother. 😂 😂
I like the irony of cashing in on it a few times 😂

Great video as always! By the way, Joseph Williams (son of John Williams) is the main vocals in Toto hits like Pamela and Stop Loving You, but he was not in the song Africa. 😊, he has a great voice.
2:50 because the movie will be over silly
funny to think that if this was made in the show's early years, there would probably be a mention of Kimba the White Lion

1:22 why do they call him scar? Because he's got a scare on his face! Nnm that's a little on the nose. No it's a big one... on his face! Never-ending! ... 😂

Love that you sometimes do classic old movies
Forgetting you already saw this video and then half way through remembering that actually did see it, but still enjoying it anyway is tight!
Ryan does a great job as always. I actually enjoy listening to him tear apart my favorite movies more, because that is a study on what audiences are willing to put up with.
This was just beautiful. I bet this could have been 10 minutes longer given how f'ed up and insane this movie actually is, but I loved every minute of it!

Excellent impression of your older vids!
I appreciate you, thank you for making content.
That Super Easy, Barely an Inconvenience is just too good.
I was today years old when i found out the singer of toto did the singing part for older simba but It also makes 1000% sense.
This guy is so smart and pays a lot of attention to details, picking up lots of inconsistencies that I have never thought of. Fantastic channel.
Wow I totally forgot about this series - haven't watched you guys in years!! So glad this was recommended on my feed! :)
Ice Age pitch meeting would be awesome. Not sure if screen rant has an article for it

Please do more of these old movie pitch meetings! Also, question for Revisited: If producer guy and screenwriter guy could form a superhero team, what would their names be and what would be their powers?
One of the top pitch meetings for me, I had so many literal LOLs 😂
