Larry Joe Bird (born December 7, 1956) is an American former professional basketball player, coach and executive in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Nicknamed "the Hick from French Lick" and "Larry Legend", Bird is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time.
Growing up in French Lick, Indiana, he was a local basketball phenom. Highly recruited, he initially signed to play for coach Bobby Knight of the Indiana Hoosiers, but dropped out after one month and returned to French Lick to attend a local community college. The next year he attended the smaller Indiana State University, playing ultimately for three years for the Sycamores. Drafted by the Boston Celtics with the sixth overall pick in the 1978 NBA draft after his second year at Indiana State, Bird elected to stay in college and play one more season. He then led his team to an undefeated regular season in 1978-1979. The season finished with a memorable national championship game matchup against Michigan State, a team that featured Magic Johnson, beginning a career-long rivalry that the two shared for more than a decade.

On his high school outdoor courts, you speculated that Larry Light have practiced his 3-pointer. The 3-pointer didn't exist until 1979, after he graduated from college.

I was just gonna say the same thing! Lol.
Every one of the great NBA players has a cool story about Larry.
Larry Bird the name says it all.
We were the first people to stay there when they opened. The boys came to play ball. The nets were about ready to tear off, so the caretaker took them down and gave them to the boys and went out and bought new nets. We have them in a shadow box. The addition on the back side of the house had a huge beautiful bedroom suite that was build for an NBA friend....Magic Johnson. The pool was great as well as the tennis court. We had so much fun staying there!

The pool house and pool is to the right when you drive in the driveway. The pool was gorgeous... I will have to dig out pictures.

Wow! As a lifelong Celtics fan and watching my favorite player Larry Legend as a kid I have to say you did a great job with this video. I can’t believe you tried on his warmup and held one of his trophies 🏆 freakin awesome and very informative too!

Thank you so much!! Larry was one of my favorites too! I grew up on the NBA superstars VHS tape watching his part with the Small Town song by John Mellencamp.

You are living the DREAM! I am a Hoosier and am very proud of our basketball legends such as Bob Knight and Larry Bird! Gotta love it! Great video! Bird is my favorite athlete ever! He is the GOAT!!!

Larry Bird was the “Hick from French Lick”!
He was great. Some black players were jealous of him and got away with racial comments
Larry has four brothers and one sister.

Does anyone know if Larry Bird's father ever worked for Tenneco oil company around 1964 or what elementary school Larry Bird went to in 1964 or 1965

@@arkguy4ever393 my dad swears that he worked with Larry Bird's father briefly in Hollywood Fa from oct 64 to Jan 65 at tenneco he said his father was his supervisor, he was a drunk didn't drive and we have Christmas pictures together I have been telling my dad my research proves him wrong thanks once again
also don`t believe this was his home Doc said French Lick was poor and the Birds were 1 of the most poorest familys in French Lick..this home is very nice

You also have to to think how long ago that was…this home was renovated. The area wasn’t the greatest either
You didn’t even go into the high school gym. You went inside the jr high gym.
Larry's dad committed suicide in that garage.

Great video, but that’s not where Larry perfected his 3 pointers, he did that upon entering the NBA.
