One time, Larry was standing at the FT line, hit the first shot and the crowd died down for some reason...he then looked at a guy on the other team and said out loud, "Son, I'm the best f-ing shooter in the league!" Then he hit the 2nd one and the crowd went crazy! I'll never forget that!

They had a competitive bond that's just different from anything I ever witnessed.. It wasn't a hug it out type thing, but almost an obsession for both of them. It wasn't until they shot a commercial together in Indiana at Birds house that they developed an actual friendship. From there it was an unbreakable respect..

And what a blessing Larry and Johnson were. Two great great great players as well, although Magic isn't close to Bird in this topic. Which is fine, if players like Magic or even Lebron do not have that many stories or trashtalking bouts it's ok. Different strokes, and a couple of key and great stories. Larry Legend has the greatest stories ever and he's the greatest trashtalker ever. When one wants to hop in, he types Larry Bird stories.

As a boston fan, it was a pleasure to watch magic and bird.

Hearing and seeing the way Magic and Larry talk about each other and respect each other hits a special place in my heart. The country and the world need more Magic and Larry and what they have.

Magic always makes me cry. Always. He loves Larry so much. Good friends. I love it.

Larry inspired a generation to work hard, never quit, and thank your momma. Legend.

I fought back tears at the end, the respect, and admiration from one great to another. Those are real men.

I grew up in LA during the great showtime Lakers era. As a Laker fan I HATED LB. Now I got nothing but Love for that man that helped give us the greatest basketball era and Rivalry ever. What a great time to be alive

I grew up watching Bird and Magic and Bird was just mesmerizing to watch. I hate listening to young guys disrespecting his name. What he and Magic did for the game is truly unprecedented. Greats have come and gone but these two literally saved basketball. Magic might have won more championships, but to me Larry was the better player.

I wouldn’t care too much if people with no judgement don’t respect somebody. You look at some of the trash they deeply worship and see their opinions and tastes were visited on them by God for some dark sins they committed. So they can be sure to go to hell by their own will.

I remember watching Bird and Magic in the NCAA finals. I knew who Magic was,but never heard of Larry Bird. Watching the game and seeing what Bird was doing, I said to my friend this guy is good in college, but he’ll get eaten alive in the NBA. How wrong was I? Hearing the stories about his trash talking elevated the respect I have for him.

Overly dramatic by me, but it reminds me of those vids Ive seen on here where US World War 2 vets, meeting with Japanese World War 2 vets, and are both crying with admiration at meeting one another all those years after trying to kill each other.

Larry's the only dude i could suspect missed the first 3 pointers on purpose just to win the comp with the last shot.

Larry Bird was one cold ass player. If players were able to back up their trash talk for some of them (cough cough Dillion Brooks) the NBA would be a hella lot watchable. I was born in 96 so I never got to see Larry play personally but seeing all of these players talk about him, I admire how he played the game and what he did for it. People thought that he wasn’t all that great and he went out and proved them wrong and dominated in all facets of the game. That’s one cold player that’s for sure

yesterday was my birthday born in 1959, i'm from Maine so naturally we liked the celts, i used to turn the sound down on the tv and listen to the game on the radio with the great johnny most, google him you'll get a kick out of bostons play by play guy. super biased! what a blast those days were!

I never comment on KZread but I totally agree with you. I believe he is my number 3 all time when it comes to wanting to win at all cost only behind the Goat MJ and the late great Kobe!!! But number one when it comes to Trash Talking. Dam I miss Magic Johnson and Bird and Kareem. Today's players couldn't hold a candle to these guys, I mean there to busy with load management 😂

Larry's all-around game doesnt get the credit it deserves. Maybe the best passing forward, good rebounder, one of the best free throw shooters, can use his left hand so well. His trash talk has nothing to do with how good of a basketball player he was.

As a Philadelphia 76ers fan, i hated Larry Bird... but I sure loved watching him play. Absolute competitor. Great guy too

Here's a Bird factoid that gets mentioned, but lost by younger generations. Bird never had a losing month when he was in the lineup. NOT ONE. 13yrs, 2ndly Bird did something that is almost impossible. Took a 29win team as a rookie, with zero additions and won 61 gms his rookie yr.. Yeah, 32gm improvement with just adding him. Dr. J always mentions this. He knew immediately Bird was going to be a problem. Oh, then won his first title in yr 2... Yeah, that's GOAT type shit. Bird was the truth. Before I get crap, I'm not saying he's the GOAT, but he's legit in the conversation of greatest players ever.

The one reason for it was not the foul language (that in fact he did not use more than any other) but because he backed it up, over and over and over. Usually everyone knows GP, KG, MJ , Barkley, Reggie are best when it comes to trash talk, but they forget that one man wrote his masters degree in trash talk... Larry Legend. The art of trash talk seem to be less present in NBA today, it was a huge part of the game. So many great stories involve it.

My husband has told me all about his trash talk n not backing down to no one. He watched em his whole career. It helped alot that he was from Indiana.

Started watching the NBA in magic and bird's rookie year. Bird is still the greatest small foward i have ever seen.

Damn...it really is hard not let atleast one tear squeeze out--every time I see that excerpt from Magic's speech. I dont even understand why. I grew up in the legend of Bird. I was a toddler in his final years. But damn, if i don't have impressions of family, friends and relatives, talking about the ethos of Bird's career and defending any perceptions of the later part of his career that skill had diminished. I did not grow up in New England. The man was respected, like a true American Folk Hero. To be an artist, thats respected as a sport's hero, I think is what hits w Bird. Theres a connection between see it, be it, become it, and leave it behind for others--in every highlight of Bird's game. Its just purely the emobodiment, of that spirit, that through will and determination, you can cut a lasting path through a free but dangerous wilderness. To hear someone w such undebatable skill and clout, one of the utmost personal determination and dedication and deligence, assess what that spirit is--- just something about grestnest defining greatness for the rest of us to reach for or understand or recognize in ourselves and others. Really this moment isn't about the NBA. Thats just something the NBA was lucky enough to bottle. This moment, represents the Spirit of Basketball, the game. What that soul is and how it exist. How the concepts of a game, can and does have a soul. Bc of players like these two, that come together to play the game for the purity of others having something to enjoy. Moments like this, are windows into something ao unfathomable that human beings can come together and do with the help and collaboration and even the healthy and equitable competion, of and with, one another. There's just purity in Bird's game, and its one of the few philosophies on playing the game, that slap you in the face with what basketball trully is: a window into the soul.
