All the malls are pretty much done. Most retail stores are struggling to stay open. People are to lazy to go shopping. They want to buy everything online for the most part. We are losing the ability to walk in to these stores and fisicaly see in person what you are actually buying. Soon you will have no choice. Just order on line and get what you get.

We just moved to Heath in 9/23. The mall needs to be redeveloped. And with the new $200 million city center coming, maybe it will breathe new life into it. If they remove the concourse and leave the anchor buildings it could be a nice outdoor shopping district.

Pizza hut on 79 was on the ropes for years, barely taking in enough to keep the doors open. I know it was there in 1980, but I'm not sure when it opened. Pizza Hut still has dine in locations. I believe they have a couple in Columbus, Mt. Vernon and Lancaster Family Video isn't really abandoned. All Family Video stores are owned by the same company that owns Marco's Pizza. Marco's has closed all Family Video locations and little by little they've been renting them all out. If you'd stopped and thought about it, you'd have realized that every Family Video was located next to a Marco's. The Kroger's on Deo Drive was opened in 1980. That shopping center was built to replace the Plaza shopping center on Mt. Vernon Road. Even though it had Kroger's on one end and Kmart on the other, that shopping center never really took off. Kmart closed in 2005 and the shops in between were always in a state of flux. The Indian Mound Mall opening in 1986 really hurt them. Palace Bowling had two bowling lanes inside it. Alcoholic Anonymous used it for years as sort of a clubhouse for their members. Eventually it was sold to an excercise facility that tore the bowling lanes out. Eventually the workout facility failed and I believe the people who own Minute Man Press now own the whole building and use it for storage. Ah the Longaberger basket. A $32 million dollar folly. I always wished one of the Columbus hospitals would buy the basket and turn it into a hospital. God knows the people of the area could use more choice for their health care. Stacey's was originally opened as Duff's Smorgasbord in the spring of 1979. Eventually the business was sold and it became Indian Mound Smorgasbord before Stacey's took over. The owner's husband did all the maintenance and when his health failed, the facility went into decline. Unable to pass a health inspection, it was closed. Big Lots was originally a Heck's department store. Heck's was probably comparable to Kmart. Heck's closed in the late 1980's, the original building was converted into a Stambaugh's hardware store. Stambaugh's went under after Lowe's moved in and the building was torn down and Toy "R" Us was built. As you know, Toys "R" Us went out of business and Big Lots (formerly Odd Lots) moved into the building. A side story worth telling is that Schottenstein's department store out of Columbus owned the old Arro department stores, along with Value City and Big Lots. When old man Schottenstein (who was Jewish) passed away. He had it in his will that all Schottenstein stores had to close on Friday at sundown to observe the Jewish sabbath and stay closed until Sunday. To get around this, the family began opening their stores as Arro and Value City to get around the wording of the will. The will only stated he wanted Shottenstein's to close, it said nothing about Value City, Arro or Odd Lots. Big Bear stores opened in 1933. The original store was opened on Lane Avenue in Columbus. I shopped there a few times. It was quite an experience with its wooden floors. Big Bear sold out to a company in the late 1980's called Penn Traffic. Penn Traffic cared little about Big Bear and seemed only to have an agenda to put Big Bear out of Business. They sold the original store and the land was used to build the Schottenstein Center. In a bizarre move, they hired temporary employees to picket their stores as striking Big Bear workers. Employee wages were cut, the stores went into decline and around 2003 or 2004, Big Bear finally closed for good.
