making james and lily older in the films really took away the tragedy of their deaths and how devastating it really was

So so disappointed that they cast actors that looked like they were in their late 30s/early 40s. I'm sure the actors are phenomenal but they didn't fit this role. The whole tragedy of their death was that they died so young at just 21.

@@vedjoshi260 Where do the books say he was still bullying Snape until his marriage? We're told he only continued hexing Snape in 7th year because Snape was also seeking to curse. Even if Remus "could have" lied, that doesn't mean he did. And even if he did, that's for 7th year, so it doesn't mean James didn't improve more after leaving school. If Rowling intended Sirius and Remus's words to be false, she'd have shown Harry find out. Her own words condone their words, so no reason not to believe her words about James when it doesn't contradict the books. Regardless, at the very least yougn adult James is ambiguous and we don't know how much he changed.

As someone who was bullied in high school, I despised James when I initially read the book. But as years have gone by I know that yes he was a bully when he was younger but he was also a hero who died trying to protect his family.

I hate how Lily's sacrifice is glorified and James's sacrifice and courage is ignored. The man ran to confront Voldemort without a wand so his son could survive . He remained locked in his house even though he was a lively man and loved freedom only for his son's sake and for his safety. The reason for lily's protection is that Voldemort gave her a choice and if James was in her place he would also choose death for his son

Never really had a great life, came from a psycho family that he ran away from. His best friend who took him in, died in his early 20s. And Sirius got arrested right after that for being wrongly accused. Escaped and spent 2 years in hiding before dying. Was never able to find a woman and get family because he never had time. But he did at least get to spend a little time with Harry who he thought of as family.

The fact that they casted actors who appeared to be in their 30s took away from the raw, plain devastating feeling I got when I read the books for the first time. Two young adults, barely out of school, barely out of their teens... It's heart-shattering. Lili and James are characters I hold very dear to my heart, but the casting didn't help to create a deeper emotional connection. You asume that two full grown adults will always put their children's safety first, but two 20 year olds? Even if they are responsible, mature and love their kid to death, I don't know, feels more... Relatable? Because I'm in my early 20s and I don't think I could give my life for a baby, lmao, so it really brings me to tears to look back at Lili and James' sacrifice. I wish they had casted younger looking actors.

I find it strange how in the last book it says that James didn’t have his wand and Voldemort instantly killed him, when in the first book when Harry faces Voldemort, he tells Harry “I killed you father first, and he put up a courageous fight.” So I thought that James and Voldemort had dueled until Voldemort overpowered him.

The funny thing is that he only beat it the second time because he beat it the first time. When he beat it the first time moldy voldy accidentally made a horcrux out of Harry and in doing so when he almost killed him the second time all he did was destroy the horcrux and that is why he survived. Lily if you think about it, it's the character with the most impact in the HP books. Her love and sacrifice was so great that it protected Harry for 17 years, even the blood she shared with her sister protected him basically. Also, the love Snape had for her was so powerful that he ended up being one of the most important pieces to defeat Voldemort and also protect Harry. Snape never stopped loving her one second and that is so beautiful Professor Slughorn also gave his memory in honor of Lily, he felt guilty for hear death and he always remembered her as one of his best students.

That surprised me too, they never actually mentioned how old James and Lily were until the last book, only that they married right out of school and had Harry not long after. Funny thing though is that in the movie version it actually makes more sense that neither set of grandparents are around to raise Harry, if Lily and James were older.

I'm glad i found this channel. I already knew all of this, but being reminded in full detail what happened after the potters moved to godric's hollow made me cry and remember why i love this series so much. Thank you.

One thing I only noticed this year is how young they were when they died, less than 30

I'm surprised you didn't mention that Snape asked Voldemort to spare Lily and that Voldemort actually listened to Snape and that he gave Lily the opportunity to stand back. Ηe gave her a choice to live, he didn't killer her on the spot.

We all got to take a small step back here. James may had done few jerkish things while he was young but honestly haven't we all done things that we're not proud of? Life is about growing from your mistakes. James still was loyal to his family and friends and when his world was threatened by a extremely dangerous wizard he did stepped up to try to save his world and others. No doubt that the war helped him see the world on a much more spiritual way. We have to understand that nobody (besides Snape) hold his childhood mistakes against him. He (and many others) grew up. He can't be defined as a person over one period of his life. It's like what Dumbledore and Sirius both said...everybody have good and bad in them and are capable of changing. We have to remember that much of the negativity of James comes from Snape who is someone who is not only holding a childhood grudge but refuses to acknowledges and see that James did do some good in his life. We have to remember that despite Snape having a deep fondness for Lilly, he was the one who wasn't willingly to changes for her nor was he willingly to see his own faults between him and James' rivalry. The situation isn't as black and white as the films make it out to be. We see that Harry does learn to accept that his father was human and regained enough respect for him that he named one of his sons after him.

No. Draco malfoy (book Draco, not movies) was a pureblood supremacist who wishes death upon muggle borns. James was arrogant and a bully but he didn't have evil thoughts and even saved Snape.

This actually makes me a LOT more sad about lily and james deaths

That is a fair point. I mean, imagine being bullied, harassed, and practically tormented for like 7 years straight (NOT TRYING JUSTIFY SNAPE'S ACTIONS OR BEHAVIORS AT ALL). And then never even getting so much as an "I'm sorry". Like, for Snape, it would take a hot minute for him to be able to fully forgive the marauders, and then again, he doesn't have to forgive them. Like just someone or some people caused you harm that's gonna stick around for a while apologize, doesn't automatically mean you gotta forgive them and be best buds. Anyways, in conclusion, Snape deserved a genuine apology from the marauders and Lily deserved a genuine apology from Snape. Also, I think it would've added a little bit more to James's maturity arc if he (at the very least) realized that what he and his friends did wasn't good and took it upon himself to apologize to Snape personally. But that's just what I think.

It wasn’t just Lily who was pregnant at the time of death. Bertha Jorkins MAY have been pregnant at the time Voldemort killed HER. I like to think that she was pregnant with a girl and would’ve named her Snow-White Jorkins.
