you may may not have realized it, but you answered your own question. Why was it LEGO? Because that's the only way to have a comedic Batman now. Batman is a dark and serious character. If you had any other animation style going for this movie, there would be rioting in the streets (using hyperbole, people). Also, I can't recall where exactly it was (as it was some time ago), but I seem to recall hearing that this movie is not canon to The LEGO Movie, but to the current run of DC movies-- explains the animation differences, at least for me.Although, on that same note, the animation differences could also relate to the main character himself. Everything for LEGO Batman is grandiose and over the top. It makes sense to make his movie equally as such.

That's true. I also feel like the other reason why it was LEGO is because LEGO obviously makes a lot of money from it's licensed themes, they took the next logical step by releasing a movie based on a well known character and property to make money (obviously), and to also help gain an audience for the Ninjago movie coming later this year, which is an original Lego theme running since 2011 but isn't as well known as Batman (sadly, I love Ninjago).

I thought this movie was actually funnier than The Lego Movie. Does that make it better? No, it doesn't. While I found both films incredibly entertaining, the ending and the message of The Lego Movie just made it a stronger flick.

Yeah, me too. Honestly, it was all because of the ending of The Lego Movie. I completely HATED it. It ruined the movie for me. Even now I pretend it doesn't exist and skip over it. One of these days, I'm gonna get an edited version that doesn't include the human parts at all.

"Won't be there for long..." Um, like what do you expect to dethrone it? Rock Dog? The Boss Baby? Smurfs? Cars 3? Despicable Me 3? Those movies seem to range from boring to painful. There does seem to be some good Animated films later in the year, but not in the first half. Hardly, "soon."

The movie left behind those elements because the Lego movie already had that covered. It did those elements perfectly and adding those to this movie would only make people say the film has the exact same plot as the Lego movie (because these days if two films share a few similar ideas, people will say they are the exact same movie). Plus, those elements wouldn't work in Lego Batman. We can't have another imagination vs instructions theme because it's Batman, we can't have another twist villain that represents a conflict between parent and child because it's Batman. Any attempt to include these in the Lego Batman movie would feel forced and (as mentioned before) would only lead to people saying it's the exact same as the Lego movie.
@mrcool9090

so your saying there has to be variety to make a twist, a twist?
I get what you're saying, but I personally prefer this movie to The Lego Movie. Maybe that's because I like Batman more than I like Lego, though. Not going to lie, my cheeks literally hurt from smiling after this movie. The Lego Movie didn't really do that for me.
You didn't really review the movie you just kept saying it "wasn't the lego movie" :v
The lego aspect was significant in this one a bit. Since he did use random lego parts from explosions and thing to build the Batwing and the Scuddler.

well, scenes like that were added purely for that reason, and could easily be replaced with him pressing a button on his wrist or something to 'summon' them, so I'd hardly call it significant.
@MostHighStudios
7 жыл бұрын
Sam That could be true. But not as fun to watch. Being made of Legos and then using Legos to build his stuff gives you an chuckle or a "that's cool" kind of thought. If it was just him pushing a button that scene is missed completely and 1 less chance to make someone smile. There's a lot of scenes that were edited a certain way that wouldn't look as good if it wasn't Legos. Example: when he's kind of going up starts changing possition saying "nope nope nope". That being an animated normal looking Batman wouldn't. have been as effective because of the editing style. and that for everyone in my theater was the funniest part. it got more laughs than anything else. Sure, this movie didn't need to be Legos. but it added a way to make it appeal to kids in a unique way, has room for more clever edits and overall a very very fun movie that wouldn't have been the same if it wasn't Legos.
@bighugeJimmy
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I do agree it being a lego movie made it much better, I just don't think you could consider the building scenes 'significant' enough for it being lego to be a requirement.

I actually liked this one a bit more than The Lego Movie but I can see where you are coming from! Asking why is it Lego is like asking why anything is animated. They could just make it live action with CGI. The Lego aesthetic is more of a stylistic decision that brings with it a slapstick-esc humour with equal amounts of parody. It's also vibrant, colourful and allows for the formula to be creatively imagined around the idea of Lego. Both the games and Movies have followed this and I believe it's the reason for their popularity.

The real question isn't "Why was it Lego?" but "Why shouldn't it be Lego?" not to mention Batman being a masterbuilder was addressed in the movie and slightly plot relevant.
I love the intro and outro music in these reviews! It's so dang catchy! :D
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on LEGO Ninjago. It's an original LEGO theme that finally gets a wide movie theater release instead of a direct-to-home release. Having it not be LEGO would almost seem wrong.
Honestly, I found the movie incredibly enjoyable! Of course, I'm not exactly much of a critic, but I still think they did really well with it.
It's not a big deal personally as I've already seen the movie but isn't it kind of a spoiler to reveal that Voldemort is in it?
Early squad where y'all at?!?!
YESSS! You're doing the review of every animated movie this year!
So glad your continuing this series !!!
I know this is your personal opinion and all, but I really gotta wonder what you think is going to come out that this one "won't be on the top spot for very long". I know what shouldn't judge by the trailers, but does anyone really think Despicable Me 3, Rock Dog, or BOSS BABY is going to outdo this one?
Not f1rst
The reason why it's Lego is because Lego already has access to decades of franchises to pull from. And also to make bank selling the Lego sets. Anything that didn't already have a set now has one. Even the Double Decker Couch.
I saw it for the second time today. I like many of your points, but I'm not sure that I agree with you on the question of if it needed to be LEGO. In my book, having it in LEGO makes the most sense. Having a CGI or real-life Batman wouldn't work for this movie. It is ultimately a comedy, and live-action Batman is usually associated with being dark and serious. LEGO Batman was established as a new take on the character in The LEGO Movie, so it was the best choice to have him in LEGO form.
I'll be honest here: When I saw the trailers, I was like "It looks really good, but I don't think it can beat the first Lego Movie", then again I waited for the movie so I can give a try, and I did, My Opinion didn't really changed. I enjoyed the Lego Batman Movie, but I think it's not as good as the Lego Movie.
October and this is still my favorite. I honestly did not think that would happen.
Yay! Thanks for posting this review. Now I know to go see this while it is out! :-D
Saw this on my 16th birthday and thought it was amazing and entertaining!
My favorite part of the animating style was the weave on the fabrics. We all know the "quality" of the Lego capes and such, and the close ups of those really nailed the texture of the weave.
YAY! so glad your doing it again chad!
When you get the Nationwide ad before the video and you can't focus because you're too shook about Leslie Odom Jr. 's beautiful voice
The only reason I wanted to watch the movie was because Robin was in it.
@Meccarox

Robin was the best.
Actually, I think adding water that looks realistic actually makes more sense. A child wouldn't make lego water, they'd get a glass or run a tap and make the character the sink. Also, if it wasn't lego, I don't know how you'd explain the phantom zone having all these different villains from completely different universes. Lego Dimensions explains it but the Lego Movie does as well so...yeah. Other than that, I do generally agree, The Lego Movie was better but I liked this one too. It had me in hysterics the entire time
"Every single thing in the universe was made of legos" ALMOST but there was also the chewing gum, Vitruvius' staff, and the string Vitruvius was on when he was ghost
I have not seen the movie yet, so I have no opinion on how good it is, but your argument seems kinda weird to me. From what I can tell, your main issue is just the animation style of the movie. Why does it have to be lego? Why not? Why did Kubo have to be stop motion? It would be faster and cheaper to make it cgi, right? I know that Lego Batman is cgi made to look like lego stop motion. I just don't see how it affects the quality of the movie in anyway. Did it being lego, make the experience worse in any specific way?
@misskobeyoshi2500
7 жыл бұрын
animation wasn't the issue It was the plot and how characters communicated with each other.... It felt soo plot armor-ish I know there are some funny parts, and the later half of the film is where its just painful because its sooo slow and wasn't nearly as funny as the first half. Awkward moments like that moment where Batman wasn't invited to Supermans party and Robin acting like Batman should accept him as an actual son even though there was no character development. Nothing was relevant when Batman realizes his mistakes its as if you had the worlds best epiphany that he was a dick. Great movie for some laughs, and tuning down hyper kids Awful movie for critics having to sit through such an agonizing plot that literally led Batman nowhere exciting other than inviting friends over
@bjornbjornson4
7 жыл бұрын
Again I haven't seen it, or looked at any other reviews, but like Chad said, the movie has a very high rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Doesn't that indicate that the vast majority of critics gave it a positive review?
I think the stylistic differences between the movies was intentional. The original movie was meant to look more realistic and "scuffed up" because it did take place in real life. The Lego Batman movie was not part of the canon. It doesn't take place in real life. Therefore, all the smoothness was intentionally made to create that separation between realities.
I'm into the LEGO games and I didn't compare this movie to the LEGO movie since it was a spin off. I loved this movie a ton. I know it seems like "Why are they LEGO?" But it's just SO interesting to see how everything is built. I was very into fan made stop motion animations with LEGO on KZread when I was younger and they were always funny and never really acknowledged why they were LEGO. If anyone remembers a channel called Forestfire who made a TON of LEGO Batman stop motion that legit had the same formula as the movie. A cocky funny conceited Batman and a charming optimistic Robin. Did they ever mention they were LEGO? No. Is this movie better than the LEGO movie? No. But it's not The Lego movie 2. It's a fun spin off for everyone who loves Batman in the first film. I am actually excited for LEGO to be the next big spoof genre. Spoofing a bunch of franchises. Imagine a LEGO Star Wars movie like this!
I love how it was sort of making fun of superhero movies in a way, like remember at the start there's a guy passing in a taxi and the other guy literally says ''man I like that guy I hope nothing bad happens to him!'' And then under his breath the man in the taxi is singing "nothing bad ever happens to me"
Great video. Love this series.
I thought it was better than the lego movie but I prefer the lego movie animation style
Still better than Batman V Superman.

chad: its nice to see the dc cast in a lighter tone me: oh teen titans go, what have you done to me
Did the Yugioh Dark Side of Dimensions come out in your theater because it came out in January this year and I would really like to see how it would rank with the other movies. If not plz let me know and if it was and you do a video on it then thank you.
I wish you did get to go to early press screenings because I always agree with your opinion so much on these animated films that when I'm not sure whether to go and see one, I always want to check your review to see if it's worth it!
ahhhh your name in the intro!!! 💙💙💙
remember that one scene with the air horns? best scene in the entire movie
When I was watching the movie in the theatre, there was this lady who would not stop laughing at every freaking joke!!! However, before the movie, she was talking about a new Minions movie, and everything clicked into place. She was THAT kind of movie watcher.
You should draw yourself in 5 video games. Like Five Nights At Freddy's, Undertale, Super Mario, Minecraft and Pokemon
I personally found this to be much better than the Lego movie
this is the batman from the lego movie. they make reference to the lego movie and show connections to the lego movie.
I watched this movie in the theater, and it was one of the only movies that made me laugh out loud so much. The kids didn't get the jokes. (the butler wearing an old batman costume and batman asking, why are you wearing that, and the butler answers with: i miss the fifties.)
What were the movies he showed at the beginning. Especially the anime and stop motion one
Will you release a list of The movies your planning to see
I feel Like the change in the animation style is a reflection of what the movie is. Meaning that I feel the lego batman movie is taking place more in the the imagination of the child from the first lego movie. I think the first lego movie the film makers tried to emphasize that the story is connected to the boy and it is more connected to the real world. Where as the lego Batman movie is just a fun additional story that the kid is making up. This would explain the graphic shift because kids can sometimes create more over the top visuals in their head than just with what they have.
it's funny how he says he doesn't think this movie will stay at #1 for long yet we have movies like Boss Baby and Cars 3 to look forward to soon
Gosh I had such flashbacks when you mentioned the Lego video games
Can someone tell me what that anime movie was at the start is it studio ghibli
I really liked the Lego Batman-movie and the reason why is because it has so much to it, there's comedy, drama, action, good messages and of course, Batman 😊

Plus, it's really weird that Warner Bros. makes a lot more better Lego Movies than live action movies
I've never laughed so much in a movie. This had so many callbacks and happy moments. I also cried a bit :/ Also my friend said that the Leto Batman movie was the fantasy of the boy from the first movie's sister. The boy has grown up and his sister is about 10ish or something maybe older. She is playing with his logos and this is her fantasy.
:-P I'm hoping your Rock Dpg review comes out soon (though I do know it'll be under Batman)
I loved both. I believe it deserved it's 91% but The Lego Movie was better and stronger but they were both amazing.
I laughed so hard at this movie. Especially the references. There were times were the kids were not laughing and the adults did.
I had just ended watching this when I saw your video 😆
My friend asked me to go and see this movie with her and tbh I thought it was gonna be dumb but after seeing it I was fairly surprised to how good it was
The appeal doesn't have anything to do with the issue of it being made with lego or not and really that just seems like a nitpick, sure the question might always be at the back of your mind but in the end, does it really matter much? Plus it being Lego helps the unrelated to DC Comics cameos and references feel less distracting. You yourself mentioned Voldemort. I didn't even know about those cameos before.
you hit two points that i had similar thoughts about - why Legos? and why not have Ralph Fiennes voice Voldemort?
As someone who's never seen a batman film nor know anything of the lore, I found this film incredible!
Me and my dad watched it together and we had a lot of laughs,it's hard to recognize the villains since I haven't watched Lord of the rings,Harry Potter but I did recognize the Daleks and my dad pointed out the villains for me (thanks god),I also liked the inclusion of old villains like King Kong and Godzilla,and let's say I've grown a love for lego Robin.Must.Protect.
haven't seen it yet; why? because in was only released DUBBED in my country and i DO NOT watch dubbed animation.
To be honest, this new, "smooth" texture to the legos is probably the best for this movie. As explained, the Lego Movie was made to scream to the audience "LEGO", however, this movie is basically a parody of a popular franchise that is Batman. If you look at those fingerprints and scratches of the Lego Movie, it gives this mood of creativity and a bouncy sort of feel. In this movie, however, its focus is NOT to focus that these are legos, but that this lego Batman is a parody of the actual Batman. This parody is so light-hearted and fun, ESPECIALLY compared to the Batman movie line, therefore this smoother texture helps this movie feel like a Batman parody instead of a spin-off from the Lego movie in which, like said in this video, had a focus on making Legos to be LEGOS. Or this specific lego set could have been a newly bought set
yes i love this series
Now review Rock Dog. I bet its almost as bad as norm of the north
I think the animation style can be attributed to the narrator of the movie - in the LEGO movie Emmett's personality fits the stop motion style, while batman's edgelord style matches the darker, more polished animation style
I would so sell my kidneys for a Lego cinematic universe.
Your late to the party, but I'll watch this anyway!
Sorry for asking you frequently to add your name to the every animated movie on twitter I didn't watch this until now
I just watched it yesterday, and it was amazing!
I was wondering why you didn't cover film GOLD or Darkside of Dimensions
please include the recent teen titans films. or just review it. i like to hear your opinion on it.
Chad Do you plan uploading more or less than last year
Can you make a video on star vs the forces of evil season 2 just ended and I would like to see what you have to say on it
I get your view on the lego bayman movie, but you are comparing it to an astounding movie that was called the 'lego' movie about the philosophy of Levi's. This being the 'lego batman' movie, it is all about the titular character of lego batman.
Mark Hamill is also well known for voicing the joker, so i wonder why they also didn't put him up for the role?
I think that the reason this Batman movie was a Lego movie was mainly because the Lego characature of Batman was such a popular side character in the original Lego movie that they decided to give that specific version of Batman his own movie It's a way to joke about all the ridiculousness of Batman without incurring the wrath of diehard fans because it a hyperbole of the real thing being displayed on a different platform of film It's supposed to be a twist that allows for comedy around a beloved character that's usually very very serious.
lego joker is honestly the only good recent movie joker adaptation
LEGO group: YES WE GET SO MUCH MONEYS FROM ALL THE FILMS!
you really should apply to see early screenings your subcount would probably give you cred
ooh i just saw it today and now its my favourite movie
"Why is it lego?" Well could you see a live action batman movie with f*cking Voldemort in it?
To be fair, this movie was, like, the DEFINITION of a kid playing with Lego. The Joker and every other DC villain getting their butts kicked by Batman alone, then the Joker teaming up with Sauron, Voldemort, King Kong, dinosaurs, and tons of other movie villains to face Batman, Robin, Barbara, Alfred, and all the rest of the DC villains? Come on, who DIDN'T mix up Lego themes as a kid? Besides, the part where everyone stuck their heads together wouldn't really have worked...
My recommendation: The Lego Batman Movie is one of those movies where if you think you might like it then you probably will. It's a strong movie, and delivers good snappy comedy, and I really enjoyed it, but I wouldn't call it a must-see envelope pushing unexpected art piece like The Lego Movie was.
