I personally perfer it when speedsters actually appear fast to the audience, like in Man of Steel and Eternals. Scenes where the world is slowed down are though cool, make the speedsters move at a normal or even slower speed and the audience has to kind of "imagine" how fast they're actually going

yes, I think the best way to convey the motion of someone going at super speed is to show how they affect the environment around them, and the way they did it for Makari was so good, it looked like getting slightly brushed by her as she passes by you would disintegrate that part of your body and when she starts fighting Ikaris solo, you feel the power behind those punches

Quicksilver from the X-men will never stop being my favorite. I can remember watching that and being mind-blown, to the point that during the COVID lockdown I would listen to Sweet Dreams are made of this for hours on end. X-men's Quicksilver is easily one of my favourite underused characters (along with Gambit) and I was really disappointed that they hospitalised him in Dark Phoenix for being too overpowered, and then never went through with the whole Magneto-is-his-dad storyline. I adore every scene he's in, but I feel like he was in desperate need of more screen time and he got unceremoniously ditched. I was also disappointed in the half-hearted slow-motion in Dark Phoenix.
personally I think Makkari had the best running scenes AND fighting scenes, the fact that sometimes we’re running with her and the world around her is going by so fast or sometimes we’re just watching how quick she is from the outside, it’s freakin amazing.

I really love what Paramount did with Sonic for his speed. What I love most is how different each scene of him using his power is and how it can relate to how fast he's going. Like when playing pin pong by himself, you see after images. But later when running from Robotnik, he is leaving a blue trail. It's also pretty neat how for the close up's you can see how fast he's moving his legs, but then within seconds he is in another position doing something else like for example in the same chase, he is running on the great wall of China and starts jumping from one side to the other or how he goes from a sprint to suddenly sliding under a bus and immediately back to running. Both the bar and roof top speed slow downs are great because the bar also uses after images and sometimes a blue trail to show he could go even faster, and you can get a sense of how much time passed from when Sonic first destroyed the robots to when they finally hit the ground.

@robonator2945

I mean they're not even going anywhere near relativistic speeds in those shots. I agree it works well, but I'd argue it far more effectively captures the feeling of tunnel vision, your eyes refocussing, and your mind getting primed to deal with faster speeds. Those small biological and psychological reactions may not *_literally_* make the world shift and distort, but they make you experience it in a fundamentally different way. It's sort of like the zoom-in shot of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 which, by physically moving the camera while adjusting it's FoV, keeps Quill's face the same relative size in-frame, but by the start and end of the shot everything about it looks entirely different. It's the same thing, captured in two entirely faithful ways, but there are obscene levels of distortion between the two.

He's not just running really fast like a normal person, he's propelling and throwing himself forward with every step he takes. One thing I don't really like anymore about speedsters is how they always slow down time for us to see from their perspective. They seem slow now, because I'm so used to the slowed perspective. I like Makari from Eternals, because they very rarely do this in fact I don't think they do it period. She looks faster than CW/DCEU Flash and both Quicksilvers. I also like how in the scene where Flash draws on the guys face. You see his hand for like less than a split second. My brain could barely process that and it made me realize how quick this guy is.
@SeanWheeler100

That scene where DCEU Flash ran to Gotham, they made his legs move in slow motion while the background went by so fast. Why? That just looks so fake. Just like when they held up the teenage Clark in the first Superman to show his super speed. Each step needs to actually hit the ground. No sliding! When my books are adapted to movies, and the studio works on Speedstress, I'm going to supervise the production to make sure there's no sliding effects with Felicity Velo. She runs in brake heels for crying out loud!
@aster1760
11 ай бұрын
So like....thats a difficult one right? Because it depends on the context. If the character is moving so fast that his velocity is sending his one step thousands of kilometers an hour, than yeah, The flash running through gotham would take one long step that would make Gotham look like a blur as he took it. Remmember in the context of super speed they are traveling as vast distances with dramatically less movement, so if you were to speed up the camera to make THEM look slow, you can hardly see their surroundings as they are passing at insane speeds from one slow step at the speedster velocity.
@l0sts0ul89
11 ай бұрын
@@SeanWheeler100 The thing is realistically a Speedster should be sliding/gliding through the air, they're super fast but still super strong since legs are muscles. When someone runs they're pushing the body forward and if you have super legs you're pushed further forward before he gravity takes a hold of you and makes you put your foot down again. So like a normal person would be 121212 but a speedster would be like 131313 going farther before needing to take another two at least pretty sure it works like that.
@aster1760
11 ай бұрын
@@SeanWheeler100to kinda add to my primary comment imma reply to you by adding that.....do remmember that velocity is something important. If your character is HYPER fast, if you have the camera slowing down the speed of the speedsters movements, then the world should be ZOOOMING by at blinding speed. Velocity dictates that if something is moving faster than it's strides carry them farther. If your camera is slowing down a character who can say run 10000000m/s in a step at a jogging speed for them per second. If you slow down the camera enough to catch them slowly taking that step jogging pace stel you will still be seeing 1000000m/s slowed only by rate of the cameras speed. Thus your character will then be perceived as sliding when they are not. Interesting stuff eh?
@SeanWheeler100
11 ай бұрын
@@aster1760 No, superspeed is not travelling further distances in less steps. It's taking more steps in less time. The Flash isn't on roller skates, and his legs aren't as stretchy as Plastic Man's. He's moving really fast while time has stopped around him. Look at how fast Dash's legs move in The Incredibles. And Sonic's legs turn into a figure eight pattern when he runs because his legs are moving too fast for the Sega Genesis' framerate. A speedster running in slow motion should only be shown while everything else is in a standstill like in scenes parodying Quicksilver's scenes. When they showed Barry running from Central City to Gotham, they should have sped up Ezra's movements, not slowed him down. The slow Flash on a fast moving ground doesn't look cool, it looks fake. And to top it all off, Ezra doesn't even know how to run!
I personally love Smallville's speed scenes, the way Clark moves at a slightly slower pace than normal, while everything else stops is great and really shows the scenes from his perspective, because he has enhanced senses, so he can react to that speed and that's why he seems to be in slow motion... it is also shown well with other fast moving characters who are as fast, if not faster then he is... Flash being faster, just accelerates away from him, while he and the world stay standing... or the Goddess Isis, possessing Lois, moves at superspeed, sees Clark and can't keep up, even with her godly farsight/vision, nor her physical speed...
A thing I really love about the DCEU Flash is that electricity always builds up right before he speeds off. It's like he needs to 'charge up'; it gives a great release-of-tension effect when he finally moves - like a bow being tightened and shot.

Snyder love adding minor details like that, remember this channel praised makkari suits is glowing when she ran? BvS we got Diana shield's glowing when got hit by energy blast, her bracelet also glowing when she want to use it. Her lasso also glowing whne she use it.
makkari's running is more fluid yet relatable to how we could envision ourselves running at her speed
One thing i think you missed that was worth the mention, is makkari used the air pressure she kicked up as a weapon
I love A train sound effect it just so satisfying 🥴
22:06 The outside perspective of the Flash vs Reverse Flash fighting around Barry's mom is so well done. One of my favorite moments of the show.
1:58 is a missed opportunity to place the Invincible logo lmao
I think you should have had the speedster from invincible, how after he saved people they would puke from being moved around so fast. He also used his super speed to punch Omni-man so fast that it actually was hurting him from being hit so many times in precise spots.

The animation style for Invincible was pretty simple though, in the context of this video, there's not a lot to talk about. They just made a solid red trail behind him, it's not visually interesting.
Honestly the moment when Dash knew he could run on water and laughed like a menace is also my favorite moment of showcasing just how exciting it is to learn your own abilities on the spot, prime cinema
I actually don't regret watching this whole video. Everything was very nicely explained

Yeah, he's not weak to bullets, unlike certain other speedsters.
I really like how in a way each speedster does something different but also adds a different element to what superspeed would be like how we see the speed of mikari, the slowed smooth perspective of quicksilver, the wild effects of the environment with flash, and how brutal speed can be with A train. I'm guessing this is a new channel but i really like it and would love for him to make more videos like this with different powers like heat vision or flight in movies.
Faora is absolutely my favorite when it comes to combat, but Makkari is a close second. Overall, I think DCU Flash generally has the best effects, even if he runs all goofy
i wish you talked more on how dceu’s flash appears to run slower than he actually is which brings up a few questions on how the speed force works. we do get a lot of it in the movie however

Yep could've brought that up. They either had to make him look fast or slow. Fast would've looked like CW Flash running up that wind turbine, so slow was definitely the right choice. The movie really explored it, which I liked.

You can also think about it this way. Each step he takes is miles long because of the sheer momentum he is carrying making it more like his legs just push off the ground that hard. So his speed isn’t derived from how fast his legs move per-se but the stride of his run.

You ever look at helicopter blades when they're spinning fast enough and it looks like they're spinning really slowly? That's pretty much what's happening when Flash looks like he's being slow. There's actually a lot of scientific things based in reality that went into Ezra's Flash and I feel like it gets clowned on way too much.
Beautifully put together and wonderfully written
this aged well for the flash movie 😐
Makkari is the best speedster effect to me, her single poses after she brakes and the way the actress leans over while running with that’s death stare makes her the most efficient speedster to me
The Speed Force protects speeders & whatever they’re running past or when they’re holding ppl
This made me realize that my work is going to contribute to human knowledge as the next blueprint for other generations to use. But wow, this is the evolution that might be imagining what speed looks like in the future.
Despite people are complaining the vfx of the new flash movie, i find myself really enjoying the opening scene where flash ran through cities and forest, really giving me the speedster vibe
Dash's speed depiction has always been one of my favourites, it's everything, pure joy in Dash, the animation, the camera struggling to keep up.
How are you such a small channel. You are sooo good!

I don't think I will ever forget Flash from Snyder cut, it felt so charming and spectacular. The time travel scene is so good that even if I am watching it on my phone I feel like I am inside the screen looking at him from just a little distance, my eyes get drawn in, the music, the build up, the visual effects, the coolness of it all is jaw dropping and feels me with awe everytime I watch it. I am very sad I didn't get to see it in 3D.

Quicksilver is my favourite.He is just calm, fun,cool and smooth at the same time while doing his thing.

Can't believe you didn't mention the greatest speedster in all of cinema, maybe even in all of fiction: The Cameraman.
Man of Steel shows how speed is used and has the best CGI in my opinion

Same. Superspeed is always the most visually interesting power to me.
That dash laugh as he learns he he can run on water is just always great to witness
I absolutely love how Snyder's DC films handled speed. Characters like Faora and Wonder Woman dashing at super speed look fantastic. When I first watched ZS Justice League the "wow" shot for me was when Flash was saving all the people who were going up those stairs, and we see him moving super fast to protect them from all the debris. Lightning fast as he should be. However when Flash fights Superman at the monument the movement of Supes has always looked a bit strange to me.
@boboboy8189

That scene when he fought superman is to shows how their speed scale in justice league. We knew Diana can evade bullet so some Wonder woman fans thought Diana can go super speed too, snyder reinsist that Diana never move as fast as other speedster did. At most, she's moving same speed as fastest bullet. In comic, her speed is very inconsistent. Sometime she's move as fast as superman but another comic she's only slightly faster than deathstroke. Meanwhile we saw flash can move normally when superman try to punch him, Barry never got a single punch but instead he try to push superman, superman got pushed back but he changed his flight ability to float and thus its like pushing a concrete, Barry got his body thrown back. You can rewatch that scene, superman already at his max speed but for flash its Just normal speed

@@boboboy8189 oh no I purely mean the movement of Henry Cavill / his digital double just looks weird in that scene. Like it just doesn't look like natural movement for some reason. Maybe it's because the fight is a bit "floaty".

To answer about the whiplash for the flash: When the flash runs he gains a sort of barrier to protect himself. This extends to anyone he touches while running which is the speed force
Quick silver delivered the most iconic speed sequence no doubt
I agree Ezra’s running is funny but like his first suit, he was new to it. Over time we probably would’ve seen an evolution to his running.

Ezra’s flash doesn’t run tho, he skates. If you compare his movements to a skater, he’s nor very far off. And the reason why he skates instead of running is because as shown in the scene where he saves Iris West from a car crash, him moving normally shatters the concrete beneath him, so instead he skates forward.
@13:00 rip havoc :(
Man, you are so calm and so unbiased! Really enjoyed the video!
One of the most compelling parts of Grant Gustins flash is that a lot of the scenes may include slow motion to help you see what's going on, but a lot of it happens in real time so you can truly feel the impact of how fast things are going. Plus his run is actually believable.
Hey it's been a while, hope you've been doing good man. Love the work of analysis in this vid. Hope to aspire like you.

Super Speed is my favourite power, thank you. I miss when it was simple. I grew up loving Quicksilver, reading about the Flash but only getting to watch stuff like the Incredibles. Then one day I saw x-men. I knew if super powers were ever real Speed was what I had to have. The evolution of the sound of running fast the insane idea to animate it from a speedsters POV, or simply showing you how fast they are with no slow-mo, to even making it goofy (time in a bottle). I love the numerous ways to display it. ❤❤
