The Legendary James Burton

Ойын-сауық

S01 E01
The series kicks off with Tony travelling to Shreveport Louisiana to visit with his buddy and guitar legend James Burton. James’s resume reads like a who’s who of the music industry, from his famous bosses, Ricky Nelson, Elvis, John Denver, Frank Sinatra, and so many more. This Rock-N-Roll Hall of Famer opens up his studio and gives a very rare look into this legend’s world. He tells some amazing stories that many have never been told publicly before, while sharing memories of the great career he has had.

Man, I love James Burton. I was so lucky to meet him one time as he was leaving a bowling alley in New Orleans. He was nice enough to stop and chat with me for a few minutes. What a guy. I hope to meet him again. Absolute legend

To make a long story short as a kid I was raised in an ultra religious household an wasn’t allowed to listen to any secular music unless it was traditional gospel hymns etc. When I turned eighteen my dad told me that I could listen to what I wanted in the confines of my room if I kept the volume down. At the time it was Am/Fm stero with a cassette (which was broke) a record player. With money I got from grass cutting I went to flea markets an bought old records. Never forget, the first album I got was James Burton and Ralph Mooney Corn Picking and Slick Sliding. Had no idea who Burton was but I loved it. I started learning those licks on my guitar. Started getting the early Merle Haggard stuff an learned all the stuff James did on those albums. To this day I still use all that in my playing. Later I was turned on to other great players in the jazz, an Western Swing/ country genres but for me it all started with James Burton.

I don't think that one can overstate, or even state adequately at all, how influential James Burton is will continue to be to serious guitarists. The man is a living legend and a national treasure. On a personal note, thank you for being sponsored by guitars4vets. As one with PTSD myself, I can say that guitars DO help.

A legend! I remember in my youth watching Ozzie and Harriet and concentrating on his playing. Always smiling and appeared to be loving what he was doing! I remember when I was teaching elementary school coming across an LP titled Guitars which was to be used when discussing music with the students and he was mentioned. It was published in 1973 by the standard oil company of California. On One side of the double album they spend over seven minutes discussing him and playing portions of his songs, including Susie Q. They have a photo of him on the back as well along with the teachers guide inside and drawings showing the different types of guitars. I still have it👍

Such a wonderful show, , Wow, James Burton, , AMAZING how many great Artists he has played Guitar with, , for SO MANY Years! That man has such a sharp memory, , “Oh yeah been working with Fender since 1955” , , I am a huge Emmylou and Gram Parsons fan, , His TONE is indeed all in his FINGERS, , no surprise when he said he did’nt need a lot of effects, , that TELE and that Fender Twin were all he needed. So good to have met you Tony, , you have great spirit of kindness as a Host. Best of luck with your show.

Thoroughly enjoyed this! James has outlived so many great people that the younger generation probably has no idea who this man is and what he has contributed to Music. James is from a generation when Giants actually walked the Earth and those days are long gone. I had the good fortune of seeing him perform live with Jerry Lee Lewis in the Washington DC area back in the mid-1990s and it was incredible. not only can he play just about any style I guess but he plays it with brilliance and that’s what separates him from all the other great guitar players in my opinion. Rolling Stone missed it by a long shot not placing this giant at number one.

I had the great pleasure of playing alongside Mr.James Burton and 1,000+guitarist on August 22, 2009. It was at the legendary Shreveport Auditorium in Shreveport Louisiana! We were trying to break the Guiness World Record of most guitarist playing a song in one setting! We didn't achieve it but what a moment, what a day I'll never forget!

I can’t tell you how this blesses me to see James doing so well! What a powerful testimony of God’s goodness! I’ve been an Elvis fan since 1973 at age 4, and started playing guitar at age 6 because I wanted to be like Elvis. But as I got older, I became more aware of Scotty Moore and even more, the TCB Band, especially James’s flawless playing. I played off and on for years but would always get discouraged and quit playing for years. But in 2015, I had a kidney removed due to cancer, and in 2016, I lost my daughter (our only child), so I feel like a kindred spirit to James and his wife. I have recently started playing and collecting guitars as a hobby and I’m determined to never quit again. They have become my “babies”. I listen to Elvis every day, particularly his live stuff and other works from the early ‘70’s. I never get tired of listening to it (although my wife does 😂) and I never get tired of hearing the magic that happens every time I hear Elvis say “play it James”! James is such an amazingly humble and gifted man and he is my guitar hero! I’ll be 55 this year and still have a few bucket list guitars I’d love to have, one of them being either a pink paisley Telecaster like James played with Elvis or a James Burton signature Telecaster (can’t decide between blue or red but love both). May God bless James and his wife with many more happy music-filled years! He is an absolute treasure!

Best wishes on your ongoing journey and I hope you don’t put off getting those guitarS. Respectfully sir, I have never seen a hearse pulling a U-Haul ;-)
