Dude the Super distortion transforms any guitar, I prefer it over any other pickup. Sounds better than those more expensive Fishman and Duncans anyday in my opinion. Does not matter if you put it in a clumsy Les Paul or a shreddin Ibanez. Even the clean sounds from that pickup is amazing even though it is called Super distortion :)

@@malthus101 Hey! Yeah it is a really good base, so good that I actually have it in most of my guitars, It is my go to bridge pickup, and Dimarzio does not have insane prices on their pickups neither like for instance Fishman has, Fishmans are expensive and I do not even like the sound of them that much. The Dimarzio Super Distortion is below 100$ and for that they are a steal. if you want your guitar more versatile you should combine the Super Distortion in the bridge with a Dimarzio PAF Pro in the neck. Dimarzio builds both pickups in several really cool colors that you can match them in as well. The PAF Pro is amazing even for bluesleads. However I most play stuff like Iron Maiden and Opeth with these pickups :)

God damn Ray…that was a groovy mix to bob my head too! That tone is to die for. Not a drop of muddiness and all the clarity in the world. I’ve never thought about the super distortions before as I am a die hard EMG guy…but this video may have opened my eyes. I would like to drop one in my prophecy sg custom. A classic for a reason. I put one in the first kit I built. Awesome.
I just bought a 2019 Dean Thoroughbred Select that the previous owner put Super Distortion in the bridge and Air Norton's in the neck and im super impressed... (i usually like SD's Mayhem Distortions) so this video was right on point for me... Thanks bro! 🤘
Between all the "non-stock" pickup brands I've tried more extensively (Dimarzio, Duncans, and EMG), I keep coming back to DImarzio, and ended up settling on the Dimarzio Crunch Lab and Liquifire set for my 7 string. I've been super happy with the set for years now, really nailing the right blend of output, clarity, and frequencies I want. I've never tried a Super Distortion myself, but it really seems like a balanced, effortlessly metal pickup. It seems to be compared to the JB a lot, and I think I really prefer the Super Distortion. Less nasal sounding to my ears.
@sEaNoYeAh
9 ай бұрын
The JB is a weird one. For metal if you're not looking for the fuzzy 2000s metal tone of guys like Steph Carpenter (Deftones), Alien Ant Farm and similar you're probably better off looking elsewhere. Forget the tone charts, it's a very dark sounding pickup and notes blur together. Great if that's what you're going for but otherwise hard to remove those qualities from the tone. The Super Distortion by comparison is like a genuinely hot PAF, with all the good PAF connotations intact.
Great sound as always, Ray! Love seeing DiMarzio have more presence on the Internet too. Great pickups at great prices. Wish more people knew about 'em!

I heard of the SD when I read an interview with Ace Frehley saying that he had one wired in the bridge of his LP Customs, since then I always associated that pickup with him.
What a beauty! Also the Super Distortion pickup sounds thick and sharp.
I just got a Super Distortion for Christmas from my wife. I had it installed a couple hoirs after I unwrapped it. I have a 2010 Epi LP Standard I have been wanting to drop a Super Distortion in for a long time so I finally did it. The result? Nothing short of awesome! Im finally able to get closer to the VH 1 album sound as well as all the NWOBHM bands I love. It can cover a lot of ground tone and sound wise. It's here to stay and has made my old LP a fire breather.
Got some serious AIC vibe going on there Ray . I have the super dist in my G&L Rampage....its killer
Come on Ray! Doing the hard work so I don't have too. Been wanting a Super distortion for too long
I JUST installed a Dimarzio SD in my Ibanez RG565 😁
Super Ds are fantastic pickups - my 2nd fav pickup behind the Duncan JB
Al Di Meola was an early user of this pickup in his Les Pauls in the 70's. At the time it was the only way to hit the front end of a Marshall hard and get a good distorted tone.

John McLaughlin used Super Distortions as well at some point during the 70s; at least what looked like them in a photo I saw of him playing his Ibanez double neck in the 70s. You know the Super Distortion isn’t a one trick pony when the giants of jazz fusion use it as well as the rock and metal crowd.

Dimarzio doesn't have the same marketing as esp. Seymour Duncan but other major pup makers in general so I never really noticed them as much. But after trying a few there's no pickup maker I have more confidence in (tied only with Bare Knuckle but the price increase is only worth it if you're got money to burn).
Wow Dude.. If you had told me that was a more expensive Bareknuckle pickup or some other boutique brand I would have believed you.. That sounded killer ! It's hard to believe that a pickup that has been around since the 70's sounded so modern.
Sad part is I remember when they 1st came out. PS: serious grit in that tone ! 👍
Nice! Thinking about getting one for my jackson
Wow man this is so sick😆👌🔥⚡️🎶🎸
Killer riff!
Love watching Ray head bang to his own music! Nobody else gonna feel it if the musician isn't into it too! This bridge pickup is extremely impressive. Not one ounce of flub on those chunky lows and the highs are crystal clear. I think this is one of the best pickups I have ever heard for metal. I'm no pickup expert, but I know what I hear!
The Super Distortion has a pretty good pedigree in heavy music. Slayer used it through Seasons in the Abyss, Carcass used it on Heartwork, and Suffocation also used it.
They sound fucking insane, with your playing man. Had some in a Ibanez SG about 43 years ago but had to sell the axe. Am now looking to build something sick and custom and am leaning to Dimazio for that reason. Have had super 80s and SG pups in my self made custom job for 40 plus years but they were always vintage voiced, even my noiseless strat set up is only slightly hotter than vintage. My old Vantage Avenger ($200 in 1981) has 11 - 11.5k pups stock and is my go to for noodling 'cause it has fire when pushed. I like to push. I should drop these into my Epi LP Standard just to give it snarl. Great vid man. Thank you.
I put one in my eppiphone paul it went from being okay to compleat insanity. I liked it so much I brought another one for my other les paul, it's jsut gotta be done if your getting a paul spend a bit extra for that monster pup. You won't regret it at all the sustain and ease to do a pinch harmonic is brilliant and it works really well with an od to send the amp way over the edge into gnarly territory

I have some ducan design in a guitar that if they get anywhere near my computer go nuts.... other pickups have less of a problem.... So thinking of buying something to cure this problem (also they are way to low output)
Hello, Ray! Can you, please, advise on how to dial heavy 00’s rhythm specifically for this pickup. It’s great on clean and crunch, after your video I was reinforced to purchase it. Cannot dial it in. I have tried many Les Pauls, while being a Jackson/BC Rich guy in general (both 25.5 inch scale usually), didn't feel much of a difference. Except for obviously requiring heavier string gauges to maintain the same tension as any Strat scale guitar and the inability to tune as low without intonation issues.

@johnnywomack548 I currently have a super D in it and while I like it it's missing some top end snarl, in my head I picture that Adam jones esque grawl. I can tell the super d would sound great in 1 of my schecters or eclipse 1000 but having trouble deciding on what to try next. 1 thought I had was a bare knuckle juggernaut or SD invader. Been told both are bright but was thinking the invader might be a bit too hot. Worst case I'll try it and either trade it or throw it in something else.
Ace Frehley's pickup in his LPs, Mick Mars used this on the first couple albums when he was using a LP, and Judas Priest used this pickup also. It's a classic. Now for you, Ray...with your style of music, if you think this sounds good (which it does), you need to try Mark Morton's signature Dominion pickups from Dimarzio. Probably the best pickup I've heard...on par with Duncan's JB or Alex Skolnick's signature Duncan (tweaked JB). I haven't heard a bad sample from the Dominion, so I hope to hear you put it through it's paces. I plan on putting the Dominion set in my Jackson Scott Ian King V.
Please do a review of ToneX with your capture 😊
If I'm reaching for a guitar with a passive pickup, there's a good chance it's gonna be one with a Super Distortion in it. It's the epitome of that classic big balls, larger than life, dirty ROCK tone.
I put one in my 50’s gold top and fuck me it’s harsh as hell. I’ve got it almost lowered to the pick up ring and it finally sound “good” I’ve been debating putting back the burstbucker . I can run my amps the same with the SD . I have to lower treble and gain.
It's messed up that this is the first aftermarket pickup ever, and for some genre it's still the best one
