    Phil Collen is an American treasure! Yes, I know he's from England. But he, and Larry, had a major role in the 80s Hair Metal era here. We love both of them.

    You don't always realise it from his work with Def Leppard but Phil is an amazing guitarist. Not saying there is anything wrong with his work there but he plays what the song needs and no more,no show boating. He is highly underrated. I've just bought an Air classic for the neck on my Les Paul. Super Distortion for the bridge next and I'm all set!

    That first PC1 is one of the most beautiful guitars I’ve ever seen. Phil is one of my favorite players. When it came out, I lusted for it bad. I was going to get one, but even then it was too expensive. Thank goodness soon after, I discovered sustainers, floyds and flat fretboards (more than 12 inch radius) are just not for me. Believe me, I tried. Still, I’d love to own one if at least for a little while. Maybe one day. There’s so many guitars out there though...

    His solo playing alone always annoys me but when he’s in an actual band or backing track jam, he sounds great. The first part is harsh, uninspired sounding, and inaccurate. But in the second part, when he plays along with somebody it’s high quality stuff. It’s fascinating. I think it’s because he’s so used to cutting through big sound that his approach is the best way to do so and he doesn’t turn it off.

    As far as I know, it’s a Jackson Custom Shop rendition of an Ibanez Destroyer 2, Ibanez’s take on the Gibson Explorer. When Ibanez first released the Destroyer in the 70s, it looked exactly like an Explorer. They changed the body shape to what you see here in the early 80s after a lawsuit from Gibson. Phil was known for playing Ibanez Destroyers back in the 80s. Another fun fact about the Destroyer: Eddie Van Halen played a 70s Ibanez Destroyer on their first few albums. It’s known as his “Shark” guitar after he hacked a chunk out of the body and painted it in his signature striped color scheme.

    The "F" spacing refers to the Floyd Rose bridge. It's either Floyd or standard.

  • @TheMrLoucrazy

    @TheMrLoucrazy

    6 жыл бұрын

    "F-spaced pickups measure 2.01" (51 mm) center-to-center from the first polepiece to the sixth. Standard-spaced pickups measure 1.90" (48 mm). Although some players believe that F-spaced pickups are only for the bridge position of tremolo bridge guitars, many guitars with fixed bridges (including post-1998 Gibson® and Epiphone® Les Paul®, SG® and semi-hollow guitars) should have F-spaced pickups in the bridge position. Most tremolo equipped guitars that have a nut width of 1-11/16” (43mm) or more should also use an F-spaced pickup in the neck position. If you’re replacing a bridge-position pickup and you're not sure what your string-spacing is, it's usually better to get an F-spaced model. It is not necessary for the strings to pass exactly over the center of the polepieces for best performance, but it is wise to avoid a situation where the E strings are sitting completely outside of the outer polepieces." www.dimarzio.com/faq/how-do-i-know-which-spacing-use

    Maybe because a lot of Charvels use the Strat headstock? Fender are also making Jackson guitars nowadays

    Funny how he goes into the whole spiel about the orange Jackson with his favorite pickups, but when he starts playing with his buddy on keyboards, he switches to the blue guitar and completely abandons the orange guitar entirely, like it was just some red headed stepchild. RIP Orange Jackson :(

    Dude, both guitars are his signature Jackson PC-1 and they both are using Dimarzio pickups. He may have switched guitars but the whole point of this video was about Dimarzio pickups and not about the color or model of his guitar.

    I'm assuming he likes it weak because he uses it to clean up the bridge pickup, rather than stand alone. Notice how in this video he's mostly using the bridge or split. Having a middle pickup that's much weaker can be very useful for adding versatility to a hot bridge pickup. The Super 3 is a damn hot pickup at 435 Output and 25k DC so a clean middle single coil complements it nicely. Like you I prefer a hotter single coil, but for Phil Collen's style it works very well.

    He wants it weak for clean tones. He keeps both pickups pretty far from the strings for less pull on the strings and glassy cleans.
