    I've been using DiMarzios since the 80s. They are the best pickups ever. Period. The most common sets in any of my guitars are the Tone Zone/Air Norton; Norton/Air Norton; and Super 3/Super 2. If find the Tone Zone works best in 25 scale, which is more important than the kind of wood the instrument is made of, which is secondary to the correct scale. The Norton works best in darker sounding woods; the Super 3 is best in brighter guitars, but is not as sensitive to scale as the Tone Zone.

    @@Sebastian-zt2id Since the RG 550 is basswood I'd recommend the same kind of pickups they put in the Jems, which are also basswood. So the Evo or Evo 2, PAF Pro which came stock on the original Jem, the Gravity Storm, etc. Also, the Fred would work great. If you want to take a chance I recommend the Steve's Special, named after DiMarzio pickup designer Steve Blucher, not Vai. I would not use the Tone Zone on a basswood instrument because the low end can be a bit bassy, nor would I use the Norton which really works best in mahogany. Basswood, like mahogany, is a midwood, and you need a lot of clarity for a midwood. I have a Norton/Air Norton set in my mahogany PRS and it sounds absolutely unreal. I experimented with a Tone Zone in my basswood Schecter Diamond Deluxe and it wasn't bad but it wasn't great. It's not a dark pickup but there is too much going on in the mids, so I could not get the clarity I needed for the sort of complex chord voicings I use. I changed it to a Steve's Special and it sounds amazing. Much more clarity and the notes pop out the right way. It's got a great, clear crunchy low end, a singing high end, and clear, musical mids. It still has plenty of crunch in the mids but zero mud. With a high gain amp you get the full effect of the Steve's Special. It's one of the clearest sounding pickups I have ever used, and it sounds amazing clean with a coil split. I use the Air Norton in the neck of the Schecter. Love it. The highest output pickups I'm using now is the Steve Morse set in my Strat. Wonderful set, totally well calibrated. The bridge pup is a monster but has remarkable clarity for such a high output pickup. The thing is the Steve Morse set may sound a bit dated to someone looking for a more modern sound, as it's really a hot rodded PAF kind of tone. To sum it up, try not to use very bassy pups with an RG. So no Super Distortion, Super 3, Tone Zone, etc.

    I like the way Evo2 and Illuminator sound in this demo for the distorted rhythm and lead examples. Those two pickups sound like they have the most even balance of lows-midrange-high notes. The ToneZone is the most unusual. It sounds like it has an upper midrange spike and high frequencies rolled off.

    I have a set of Illuminators in my RG 920 Ibanez, they have much more clarity and definition than the Tone Zone in my RG 1070. TZ sounds muddy, but the Air Norton in the neck position of the RG 1070 is very nice sounding esp for clean tones.

    I hate the illuminators I have in my JP15, they're super sharp and congested, they enhance pick attack too much. I'm not a fan of them at all. How do you compare those to the rest of petrucci sets? Nice video btw!

    A friend has the Satchur8 and it sounds amazing. Good clarity, bite, harmonics, etc. Everything you'd expect in a Satch model. Joe's pups are always Alnico, and in the case of the Satchur8 it's Alnico 8. The only other DiMarzio I know of with an A8 mag is the IGNO, which I haven't tried, but which comes stock on the Scott LePage Ibanez.

    Hi, I use Gravity Storm in the neck of my JEM. Nice sounding pickup similar to EVO. As far as Super 3 goes I Haven’t tried this one. Mayones Regius from this video is a Swamp ash and with D sonic it’s a monster sound, but I’d also consider Evo2.

    There's more to how harmonics work than whether or not they use a dual resonance design. Dual resonance gives more tonal complexity and makes the highs and lows more dramatic. It also makes for more interesting cleans. This is the thing I most love about DiMarzio. They are not boring as Duncans, which tend to have a narrower, pinched tonal spectrum. If anything, I would think the dual resonance design gives more complexity to harmonics. This has just been my experience using DiMarzios since the 1980s. I've used a number of Duncans too, but they never really cut it for me, so I stick with DiMarzio.

  • @mandanglelow1442

    @mandanglelow1442

    3 жыл бұрын

    There are just too many factors that go into your overall tone to just say that bare knuckle and Duncan's are better than these pickups. A great tone in your bedroom doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be great when it has to mesh and mix with the sounds around it like bass and drums and maybe other guitars. Also let's not forget most of the sound gets wrung out from the player himself and his particular style and fingers. Lastly I just want to say that the rest of the EQ options you have after that are ridiculous. You've got EQ on the guitar then you have EQ on your amp and you can also have a seven band boss EQ on your pedal board. I've recently been going nuts listening to audio demos of different pickups and what I've come away with is that most of them all sound pretty much the same. I mean of course you do have some that are brighter or darker but in general your tone is going to have a lot more to do with the other things I mentioned then the pickup. In other words a great set of duncans and a great set of bare knuckles and a great set of dimarzio's are all going to be able to get the job done.
