To be fair, Kash really did save Vex with his spell: the deal that Vax made with the Matron of Raven simply convinced her to allow that spell to have an effect.

The conditions to revive someone are the soul must be free and willing (and also can't have died from old age) Vex was willing, but she was in the Matron's territory, and SHE gets to decide if she allows a soul go. Resurrection isn't free and easy to do. So Vax got permission to revive her, but Kash was still needed to actually perform the spell. Team effort. Yay.

It was like that in the game, after all; Matt did not know what they where going to roll when Vax deided to do the soul offering... but even if the resurrection actually went smothlly; he liked so mutch the concept of Vax selling his soul to save Vex, that he reconned that it was very influential... ...and I think that for the show they reconned further away to do it even more dramaticall; stating that the Raven Queen was not going to allow the magic to work until Vax offered his soul

Hopefully I can say this without it being too much of a spoiler: There have been multiple campaigns of Critical Role, and in some of them (I won't say which), main characters have died and the player had to invent a new character to keep playing. So yes, main characters can die. And BTW, Vex's death is taken pretty much beat for beat from the campaign. She DID die and Vax really had to make that deal to save her.

  • @sdaubs

Grog is wearing a belt of dwarvenkind. It lets you grow a beard, speak the dwarven language, and your Constitution increases by 2. The main difference between D&D and a regular show is there is no plot armor (normally) in a D&D game. Your character dies, your character is dead. Period. Are there ways to revive said character? If you have the spell loaded and the materials, yes. Otherwise, you roll up a new character and your previous character's story is over.

You touched on this thought, and I will confirm that since this is based on a dnd campaign, the risk of them dying permanently is very real. Especially since Matt Mercer made homebrew rules to make revival spells harder to succeed at. I obviously won't say if it actually happens, but plot armor doesn't work the same for these characters like in other shows.

With the way D&D works, it's nearly impossible to perma-die after level 5 when you get first access to resurrection stuff, whether via a Cleric or an NPC the party searched out, unless the whole team wipes. There are so many different ways to bring back characters that many DMs put custom restrictions on death and resurrection. Matt Mercer, the DM for Vox Machina, uses a custom group skill challenge to see if they can convince the soul to come back, and there's also stacking drawbacks each time someone dies and comes back, making the Difficulty Check for doing it higher each time so that there's still tension with death, even though they have ready access to resurrection magic.

Hearing the behind the scenes commentary for, well all of these episodes but especially for episode 3, the level of detail in their story telling is legitimately out of this world, not just visually but in what you hear as well. If anyone goes back to check this out, with the exception of action and flashback sequences, the episode has no music what-so-ever until the very last scene where you hear it all come in. It was purposefully done in order to give you a subconscious feeling of uneasiness & that something is missing, b/c it is, the music is gone. It is something that doesn't get talked about or even noticed a lot, which is partially intentional, but I still want to highlight it. It is perfect storytelling through sound design and I love it.

It's kinda a pity the youtube edit mutes the music from the final scene. One of the unique things about how effective this episode is, which is why it feels so off-kilter all the way through, is there IS NO music for the entire episode - right up until the final flashback for Vex, right before the necrosis trap explodes into her face, ending in Vax's audible grief, and that haunting piano chord on the red dragon title card reminding us of Ossya's words: "You must not fail. Riding the imbalance these horrid creatures bring depends on your success."

they aired 3 episodes a week, so they still ended on that moment. It was harder than in the campaign, where Laura had rolled a 1 on her Dexterity save, taking damage which brought her below zero hit point and killed her. Kashaw was able to cast Revivify the same episode, and during the ritual Vax offered himself to the Matron of Ravens in his sister's place. These moments changed the whole course of the campaign and are still having repercussions in campaign 3. they were so very good about integrating backstories here. the bit with Trinket was adapted from a short story Laura had written. The twins backstory was worked out when Liam and Laura - who share a birthday hence the twins thing - just sat down for lunch to work it out. There actually was a skull of an onlooker - the discount Beholder here - in the Slayer's Take.

A bit of DND lore on dragons: the color of it tells what breath weapon it has: white = ice, green = poison gas, black = acid, red or gold = fire, blue = lightning. 5:56: He's HELPING! :D All I'll say re: the vestiges, the Matron of Ravens is a death deity, so wearing her vestige, and being her champion, carries requirements that are appropriate for her domain. Vax had to accept his "death" in the vision with Purvan before the Matron unlocked the armor's power. The Mighty Nein show is being produced at the same time as Season 3 VM, but there's no word yet on when either will be released, or if they will be released in tandem. They are both definitely happening though, and in production as we speak. There's no fear that anything is being abandoned :) The episodes always feel WAY too short :) I always wish they could be even a couple of minutes longer, since they do SO MUCH with every single minute of the show. Vax's speed boost with the armor was changed for the show. In the campaign, he had boots that allowed him to move super fast, but the cast and animators decided it would be better to make the vestiges even better. Matt made changes to resurrecting characters. First, it is expensive to do. Second, you have checks that are performed by others to aid in the resurrection process. If I am not mistaken, this was Vax's role in aiding Kash's resurrection spell. And finally, the checks get progressively harder the more you die. So if Vex were to die a second time, it would be harder to resurrect her. Also in the campaign, this was actually Vex's second death. Vex was the one who died in the ziggurat rather than Keyleth. It was changed so this moment would have more of an impact for the show. Also, there is a season 3 coming. I believe it is slated for beginning of 2024 ( probably February/March due to the Hollywood strikes). This was announced before season 2 released.

The best part is they truly did have SO much trouble with doors. Even in other campaigns. So all this ragging on and messing with doors that won't open is all true. Also, any time the DM Matt Mercer came up with a name on the spot or had a cool one that he thought was good but hadn't said outloud/tested before hand, if it sounded even a little pervy/goofy, the group would make fun of it and the character with that name. They've done it loads of times.

In this case, the vestige is the armor worn by the Raven Queen's personal champion. The Raven Queen is the God of the final breath, that moment where a mortal changes from a living being into a dead one so trying to perform a resurrection in the tomb of her personal champions final resting place is a literal act of heresy against her. The only way you could give her a bigger slap to the face would be to raise an undead there. What Vax did was offer up his soul to the Raven Queen to do with what she will in exchange for his sister's life. The Raven Queen accepted and made sure the resurrection worked perfectly, thus gaining ownership of Vax's soul. What she chose to do with it has to have Vax serve as her eternal champion, in this life and the next, which automatically gave the armor to him.

Let me remind you, this is a dnd campaign, the characters don’t have as much plot armor as your typical main characters in other shows. Keep in mind, any of these characters can die at any point, because well everything is decided by the roll of the dice, which can easily cost the player their life if they aren’t careful. As for Vex in this episode, yes she did die. In the campaign that was a 1 hit KO trap, which Matt Mercer doesn’t really do that often, typically you don’t die immediately when you hit 0 hp, instead your unconscious and have to do death saving throws. Anyways, with this trap there weren’t any death saving throws, she was immediately dead. They used a revival spell and it was hard as hell to pull off, but they managed to bring her back from the dead. Tho there was a high possibility that the spell would fail and Vex would be permanently dead. So yeah, just keep this stuff in mind. No one is safe in a dnd campaign.

Zahra and Kash are crazy powerful. they appeared as guest characters during a 2-parter back in Vasselheim, along with Lyra (a haphazard scholar of magic played by Felicia Day) and Thorbir (a grumpy Dwarf warrior played by Wil Wheaton) Lyra, Zahra, Grog, Vex, Scanlan and Percy went to kill the white dragon Rimefang, and Thorbir, Vax, Keyleth, Kash and _Tiberius_ went to kill the rakshasa Hotis (that's the man-tiger that Vax shoots out of a window when telling his tale back in S1). Tiberius was cut from the story since Orion Acaba left the group in S1, and the whole of Geek & Sundry was split when Felicia sold the company to Legendary. those missions are what Vex is probably referring to as "we know them from... before..." I still hope we see Lyra and Thorbir during season 3... the battle for Emon is gonna be HUGE.

Rejoice in the good news that Season 3 of LOVM has already been approved, we're just waiting for a release date, the pilot episode for The Mighty Nein, a 2nd show based on the 2nd campaign has been written, and Critical Role inked a multi-project deal with Amazon that will include more seasons of Vox Machina, more animated shows, films and other content. I really hope we get a film or limited series for EXU: Calamity, a 4-episode live campaign based on certain events leading up to the battle scene depicted in episode 4.

I think you had it right Vax made a pact with death and he is now bound to her rather than his sister. I don't know if we've seen the full power of his vestige yet. 50/50 could either be a glimpse of what it is capable of and he'll need to work up to it or just a taste of what is to come. What worries me is this is what was required for his vestige, if each of the party is going to get one (which makes sense being based on a game) then they're going to need to sacrifice a lot.

so based on the pacing Legend of Vox Machina should run for about 5-6 seasons. The other show is based on their second campaign called The Mighty Nein, that will be a seperate show that might run concurrently or might start after LoVM but that might be a slightly longer show

Honestly you're lucky you release these in batches of two. We critters can be just as brutal as that trap was. For a lot of reactors who post this episode before they've watched episode four. Was all of us confirming that what they saw was her dying. Which is true. She is dead. Not unconscious rolling death saving throws just dead. But we all left out mentioning that revivify is a spell.

There is so much I want to say about this moment in stream, but since y'all were considering watching it I won't. What I will say is that Vaxs' deal with the Matron of Ravens was a fantastic example of improvised storytelling. Had the spell been detected and broken, Vex wouldn't have died, and Vax wouldn't have had to make the deal. That entire plot point was created on the spot by the players' actions.

Irrelevant but I’ve had that exact same poison dragon/gas dragon debate with friends. The short answer is that it is two different ones. In D&D black dragons spit acid, green dragons spit poison gas. Which is why I wish they’d made the acid black to match its dragon and kinda clear up this exact issue.

The story from osisa about the vestiges has been change from what was explained in the table top game events so that's unknown as of right now.
