The legend of "Moby Dick" - the incomparable Porsche 935/78
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
It's one of the most astonishing racing cars ever made, one of the weirdest, era defining monsters. The brainchild of Porsche engineers Norbert Singer and Hans Metzger, the Porsche 935/78 was at the height of performance. Made specifically to conquer Le Mans, it raced with authority, truly going laps around its competition. Hear all about its history and construction, along with its reunion with Jochen Mass as it wowed during the Group 5 Demo at the 76th Members' Meeting. #76MM

One thing that always surprised me about this car is how modern it looks. If you made some changes to the body, it wouldn't look too out of place today.
Race cars of this era just look so damn good...
Dear old Jochen Mass... I’ve always held him in extremely high regard. Under appreciated driver.

He is one of the survivors. The massively fast Porsche sportscars claimed the lives of many name drivers in that era.
And now Porsche are bringing it back - IMO sympathetically modernised, too. Very rare for that to happen. Bravo Porsche!

It's a weird sensation.. I have so many nostalgic feelings towards this car because of the old Need For Speed: Porsche 2000. As a kid, I searched so hard to find a model of this so I could look at it and touch it. Now, I am 23 years old and still in absolute love with it. Watching videos like this makes my heart pound like crazy.. Heavy breathing.. No car has ever done anything like that to me. The Moby Dick is the one and only. In my mind, the most beautiful creation in the world. Hopefully I can meet this car one day. I'll remember to bring a chair to sit on, so I can comfortably stare at it for hours. Am I crazy..? Maybe.. But what an amazing thing..

I had the chance to see this car in the Stuttgart museum and it was just incredible. I can’t express how it felt, Ive only ever seen that car in video, print and plastic model. There it was and it was like nothing else mattered or existed, unreal the presence this car has, you can’t help but stare at it. Thank you Porsche, this and the 917, 935, 936 are my favorites of all time

@CNSFX

Revan Skywalker Yes it’s massive compared to the usual 911’s. Very long, low and wide. You can see it’s a hand built car. Inside it’s rough and all business. Outside it’s very purposeful bodywork can be studied and you can see what Singer was thinking. I loved the paint job, the quality of the stripes is excellent. I can go on and on... go see it!

I can totally relate. I had a similar experience at the Stuttgart Museum before a factory tour in 2003, all that history & engineering/design sitting right in front of me. It was magical being there.
Saw this at Rennsport Reunion a few years ago. Porsche brings all the original race cars out - frickin amazing. Norbert Singer, Hans Metzger, jovial Jochen Mass. Wow. 🏁🇩🇪

Saw it at Le Mans in '78.'.. Lots of flame on the overruns as with all the 935s....very spectacular at night!....Some favorite memories from that period.... I loved the long tail Renaults as well.
That group five Lancia looked awesome too!😎
Read in an old sportscar magazine that did 378 km/h easy back in the day! Monstrous yet exquisitely one of a kind. ❤️
Stunning car. I particularly liked the bit "it was very hard to run the car very much, because our car was so much better than our customer cars" yes, fantastic!
Feel SO fortunate to have met Mr Singer, when I worked for Porsche. Incredible race car, competing at a time, never to be repeated.JTOrlando, Fl

So many magnificent cars, back in the days... The 935 Moby Dick was my favorite race car when I was young, it brings back so many fond memories of Endurance Racing! Thanks for this!
I really miss the Group 5/6 era. It was my introduction to sports car racing in 1980 at the Silverstone 6 hours and I recall it like it was yesterday. Such a mix and match of different cars all trying to keep up with the 935 K3's and the odd prototype with more pace but often less reliability together with some older 908/910's for show and if lucky a 936. Sadly the only time I got to see a 936 was for a race start and that was it. Jochen binned it into the catch fencing at Woodcote at the end of lap one and that was it. I have never forgiven you Jochen :)
Additional thanks for Jochen Mass nanointerview

Fabulous. Thank you for bringing back such fond memories...
It´s a magnificent "piece of art" in the automotive world...
What a pure racing shape! And I love those red wheels!
By far one of the greatest and most beautiful race cars ever made. This thing really melts my heart every time I look at it. Hats off to Porsche for making such an incredible machine.
70s era race cars Nothing like them they are just the best ever 😍😍👍👍
Great video with some really interesting details that I was unaware of.
Incredible car even by todays standards and a real gentleman to boot.
The most recognised GT car in 70S. Legend, beautiful beast
Thank you for sharing. Good to know the real story. . The cars stats hold up pretty well compared to 2020 technology. Outstanding!
I love driving this car in Assetto Corsa. Closest I'll ever get to the real thing 🤷♂️
Incredible car. Thanks for sharing.
What a phakking killer race car. I love to see and hear it. I visited the Zuffenhausen Porsche museum just to meet this beauty
Great video, excellent production and narration!
I was at that race at Silverstone in 78. First time ever been was hooked. Jack icyx also drove that car , that day. And Ronnie Peterson was driving a MK 3 BMW. Wonderful day.
GR8 car, GR8 driver & fabulous combination! Many thanx 👍

One of the best race cars ever made (Moby Dick!)
After driving one in GRID(racing game on Steam), I had to learn more, even in the game this car is crazy special the way it can do what it does is nuts! it feels like there's literally no end to it power, and the cars are based off the real thing so, I can't resist, gotta know more.
What awesome looking race car ,Still looks awesome today
Back in 1979, as a Porsche obsessed teenager I bought this car as model kit by Tamiya. It was the most enjoyable build I ever did. The car just looked amazing, the design was simply off the chart. A real pity it never raced more than 3 time and developed further.
I still have that car on a poster in my garage
Nothing tops those crazy 60's and 70's cars esp. icw that epic Martini stickering.
Truly one of the greatest era's for Motorsport, back when it took heaps of skill and balls the size of water melons to step in to cars like these and race them on tracks like spa and le mans 🙌🏻
I drooled over every magazine article I could find about this car as a kid and even had a few of its specs committed to memory (hp, weight, top speed at LeMans). But I'm embarrassed to admit I knew nothing about it having WATER COOLED HEADS!!! I never heard of a Porsche flat six with such a feature. Now I wonder if I would have discovered it back in 1985 if I had bought the Tamiya 1:12 short tail model of this instead of the Jagermeister 934 RSR Turbo?
Cars revving in the background is borderline art
Gorgeous Porsche!!!
Beautiful racer
Masterpiece..
I built the 1/12 model kit by Tamiya of this Car, bit like building the real thing but in miniature, what a wild wonderful looking Car !😳

What a machine...Love me sum Porsche race cars!
Wow 935. Like it . 👍
That’s a sexy car just like the 917
I have a 934 Replica i need to restore I wish there were more vids on them :(
Beautiful car,an all time classic but why anyone would want to be driving this priceless classic around a freezing cold track in the bleak mid winter British weather is beyond me,it's an endurance test for the spectators as well!😀
Beauty in the beast.
Incredible car 🔥👍
Half way through watching this, I found myself shaking up a martini... 🍸
I want to say that era is completely gone but take a look at the the new Corvette. Mid rear engine those types of radical changes is what I love and just for the name of racing.
Is there any footage of the Lancia and Beemers as well??
Right hand drive.. There has to be a story about that

Quite often, cars meant for Le Mans are RHD because the pit garages are on that side (it also helps balance the weight laterally for that circuit as it's mostly right-hand corners).

The fact this thing makes almost 850hp and weights almost 2200 pounds is terrifying and it’s a face car from the 70s
1:21 that wrench omg!!
It's weird, once you've spent a few hours in the car, and learned where it's limits are, you realize the car was telling from the start "here's what I can do, if you go beyond that, I can't be held responsible for your safety" ... it's the strangest thing, it really is counter intuitive to have that weight back there, but also the wealth of downforce with very precise limits to it, I suppose anyone in real life driving something that special could do amazing things, it's a real collaborative effort between machine and man.
I would love to see this monster at full chat!!!!
In 1978 most young men lusted after Farrah Fawcett. I however lusted after this car. As a 20 year old, both would have been too expensive and difficult for me to drive.
