A lot of people get confused about Korra "going in and out" of the Avatar state, but that's only because we're used to seeing Aang consumed by it. Remember though in ATLA we see both Kyoshi and Roku do the same thing as Korra. They get a brief boost of power to accomplish a task. Aang never had trouble accessing the Avatar state, because he was strong spiritually, but he had a hard time controlling it (he was always timid of power and had a hard time accepting his role). Korra on the other hand had a hard time switching it on initially, because of her inability to focus on the spiritual universe and not what was immediately in front of her face, but she has never denied her identity as the Avatar and does not back down from power which is why I believe she has better control over it. Aang in the finale shows he mastered it as well after defeating the fire lord when he turns on the Avatar state briefly to raise the water and put out the forest fires

Yes, this! Avatars who have full control over the Avatar State tend to only use it in short bursts - after all, it's an incredibly dangerous and vulnerable state to be in! If you die while you're in the Avatar State, Raava will die with you, and the cycle will end forever. So getting that burst of power when you need it is great - but after that, stepping away from it again to protect the cycle is only wise.

Korra's power level in the final fight makes enough sense to me when I think about how she's chilling in the tree of time connected to the pure cosmic energy of the universe during harmonic convergence. While her spirit's been projected to Republic City, she's got a lot of juice powering it.

Does the Tree of Time have some kind of power that we were made aware of? I don't recall being connected to cosmic energy being described as a power source. I also don't know why her spirit is then projected at the same exact height as Unavaatu. I feel like there's a lot of holes with these different powers, and we're just expected to make assumptions on how they work. It's fine for story progression, but it still feels lack luster.

I suspect the reason pure Korra could take Unavatuu is because the idea was that her inner light and strength (I'm the avatar and you gotta deal with it) was strong, a lot of her first books struggle was recognizing her identity separate from the Avatar. This one was about finding it within the role. She had to find her strength inside herself which is (as with Wan) was greater than her Avatar self. It's not about what she is, it's about who she is

The opening monologue of S1, hearing that Aang is gone, was too much for many fans. Letting go of the past Avatars was a good move story-telling wise. Having Aang pop up to solve S1's ending made sense in lore and was satisfying, but would get old really fast. The creators often use themes of loss. Bold move considering the age group of the audience. It was just too much for a lot of fans when it first aired. Trust the Creators. "..he became a Legend because *who* he was, not *what* he was"

I know season 2 has weak points, I really do, but there's so much in it that's beautiful and powerful and I would happily rewatch any day. These last two episodes have so many examples of that; Tenzin's realization about being his own person, him being able to pass that lesson on to Korra, her reflection on her own worthiness as Avatar, the conclusion of Bolin/Eska which I know is primarily comedic but is also kind of actually sweet in these final moments, Korra and Mako finally breaking up in a genuine and mature manner, the feeling of how something has irrevocably changed in the world as a result of this harmonic convergence, Korra's super interesting decision to leave the portals open and how it ties back to the start of the season with her feeling frustrated that nobody trusted her to make her own decisions as the Avatar (a frustration that was really with herself and with her own insecurities about being the Avatar), the visuals, the score that is absolutely beautiful... I'm so glad it all exists.

I also feel there is some meta-commentary one could take from the ideas presented; the ideas of 'things will never be the same, and that's okay' in terms of making permanent changes to the world of Avatar, like losing the connection to past Avatars; and also ideas of 'you should be yourself before you try to be the perfect Avatar' in terms of what I've come to see a lot from people, which is that they basically want Korra to not be Korra, but someone else - they want her to be more like Aang, maybe, or just in other ways they want her to be not like herself. And the thing is, while Korra has flaws, the best written flaws are often also strengths, because that's a very human thing. Korra's readiness to fight, to be physical, to be driven and decisive and unyielding and stubborn, these are things that can be positives just as much as they can be negatives. And while like every human she of course has to learn to navigate the world and navigate her own identity, her job is not to stop being who she is or to become a different person; her job to be herself. And some people seem to expect that Korra's journey is one of having to stop being these things that are so integral to her personality and her identity, and they will get frustrated when Korra does not stop being who she is, because they see her personality itself as a flaw that needs to be fixed. But to me, who Korra was has never been her problem, and I've never viewed her qualities as negative things; they're just human things, and they can have good or bad effects, and that will *always* be true, for *everyone*. I love Korra for who she is as a person, her desire to do what's right, her willingness to self-sacrifice, her care and kindness for the people around her; and I also love how stubborn she can be, how fierce she can be in standing up for her own opinions and feelings, how happy and confident she can be in being herself, even if other people don't like her. I think her constant struggle with navigating trying to be herself while also trying to deal with what the entire world expects of her is super relatable and human, which is why I enjoy her mistakes just as much as her successes.

I do appreciate that this episode really drives home a point that I think a lot of people miss about ATLA- just because it is important to heed our elders, that’s not the same as being bound to make the same decisions they did. Aang sought the advice of past avatars when he was preparing to fight Ozai, he listened to them and considered why they held those beliefs in the context of the challenges they faced in their lives… and ultimately he rejected their guidance and kept searching until he found his own solution. Furthermore, Pathik taught Aang that the separation of the nations was an illusion, but Roku insisted the four nations were meant to stay separate. By forming Republic City, we see Aang has chosen the former’s guidance over the latter’s, and in an odd twist of fate, actually ended up fulfilling Sozin’s vision. This is one of the most important morals of both shows, something we can take into real life. Learning from past generations doesn’t mean repeating their mistakes. We can see them for their flaws as well as their virtues, and choose to do better for ourselves.

It's weird when people twist/misrepresent the show to fit their moralizing. Aang did not reject the guidance of the previous avatars, after speaking to Yangchen he rightfully understood that he had to set aside his misguided, childish interpretation of Air Nomad culture and said out loud "I have to kill the Firelord." Then more of the atypically terrible writing that the final arc of the show was so plagued with deus ex machinaed a perfect answer to his recently invented problem about killing (since he had no problem with the dozens/hundreds of fire nation soldiers he killed during the first chapter and bam, his problem was solved without giving anything up to get it. I mean there's still the question of how incredibly selfish you have to be to take such a risk with the future of the ENTIRE WORLD, because if his gambit with this new energy bending power fails he's condemning the world to multiple generations of being crushed under the boot heel of Fire Nation dominance. Maybe longer/forever depending on how smart/ruthless the Phoenix King was. But that is the arrogance of the young, to think that they know better than those who have gone before. I was certainly no different when I was young, and it's particularly funny the first time you find the shoe on the other foot and realize you're one of the olds now. But I promise you that as you get older the previously unthinkable 'I wish I had listened' will become an uncomfortably common thought. Turns out you are actually not that different from your parents, who thought they knew better than your grandparents, who thought they knew better than your great grandparents. It's never been about elders who were bogged down in tradition. Life is like tumbling over a never-ending series of waterfalls and when our parents/teachers try to hand us a life vest before the next drop we jerk our hand away and insist 'I can swim on my own just fine MOM'.

Like it or hate it, this ending was such a game changer for Korra and for the world at large. Korra choosing to see that Unalaq had a point and making this big decision, in spite of how terrible he actually was, is a big point of growth for someone as adversarial as her - to see beyond black and white, and really step up as a spiritual leader. But I always feel conflicted about the decision to split her off from the past Avatars for good. On the one hand, I think her finding her strength of will separate from being "The Avatar" is important for Korra, and it helps her better forge her own destiny, so from a storytelling perspective it's very powerful. On the other hand, one of the nice things about Avatar is knowing the past Avatars are still sort of around. They are effectively all gone forever now, which is still so sad for me. (Especially since we only just got to meet Wan!)

Earlier we got to see aang wasn't the perfect father we all expected him to be. We got to see aang more humanized rather than this all powerful kid with infinite wisdom. But when he said to Tenzin "you are not me. You should NOT be me." Tells you everything you need to know about aang. He loved all his kids, and all he wanted for them was to become their own person. To find their own identities and seek their own destinies. And they all did. So to me, that makes aang a wonderful father, and he did his job.

TL;DR: Korra's choosing to go in and out of the Avatar State to get power boosts during the fight while not being in continuous danger of ending the cycle, which would happen if she were to die while glowed up. There's multiple ways in which the Avatar State works. Firstly, there's the reflexive/reactive Avatar State. This is the one Roku describes with the explanation he gives to Aang in AtLA. The Avatar State gets triggered like this if they are in danger or in a very emotional state. There is little to no control and the Avatar stays glowed up the entire time. Almost all instances of Aang's Avatar State in AtLA are this version. Then there is the intentional or masterful Avatar State. This is when an Avatar who has mastered the State briefly enters it to essentially store knowledge/energy, which they then use for the task at hand right after they leave the State again. An obvious upside to using it this way is to make sure they're not in the State too long, given that an Avatar is their most vulnerable during it. In AtLA, Aang only used the Avatar State once like this, when he controls the tides to put out the fire after his battle with Ozai. However, Korra is shown to mostly use the Avatar State in this manner.

This finale was controversial and I think it has a lot of problems (not crazy about the Kauji battle) but I absolutely love Korra getting her own version of the Chakra bridge and Tenzin refusing to give up on her is really great. Seeing Tenzin finally see himself as something other than an extension of his father is amazing, but seeing the Avatar connection broken is devastating. Resetting the cycle kinda sucks. Seeing Admiral Zhou was absolutely wild. Out of everyone from the original series seeing him again was not on my list. Dude was a an evil dick but I'm not sure if even he deserved to be tortured forever in spirit prison. Also, what in the WORLD did Bumi go through in the army?

It's okay. Restoring the connection to Raava means she and future Avatars has access to all those 10k years of Avatar life cycles anyways all neatly packed into one person they can talk to instead of having to search for just the right Avatar. Not that that matters. Outside of the most recently dead Avatar, most of the knowledge and wisdom of previous Avatars will be outdated anyways. There are plenty of living wise men and women who will have a more contemporary understanding of the world, which is the wisdom the Avatar actually needs to traverse the complex sociopolitical context of their job. Any questions an Avatar has about the spirit world can be discussed with Raava or any other spirit including human spirits like Iroh.

Korra losing her connection to her past lives is not only devastating in an emotional sense, but also in a spiritual one - she has Raava, but other than that, she's on her own now. When she goes into the Avatar State, she no longer has 10,000 years of experience to draw from. It's just her. And she is a very good bender, but she _is_ still young - and that is so much lost expertise. In the future, she might have to make do without the Avatar State giving her the huge power boost we're used to seeing.

Channeling Raava or Vaatur fully (the Avatar State) is a vulnerable move remember? Often times, Avatars will channel their power briefly for a specific maneuver once fully in control. Aang, Kyoshi and Roku all displayed this technique and Korra has also, just more often. She does it as a way to gain an advantage. Hers is, in theory, more potent than Unalaq's because Raava and Korra are bolstered by the wisdom and power of every Avatar that's ever lived, and share their experience. This is Vaatu's first time, so he only strengthen Unalaq and his waterbending.

I think that the key takeaway is to never underestimate your own spirit. Hierarchies, like how "I'm stronger, you're stronger etc," are part of the physical world, and while we might temporarily let our minds be shaped by that, hierarchies never truly define our inner spirit. Korra had a powerful experience when she let go (forcibly, it's true) of her past self as the Avatar. With Tenzin's guidance, she was able to reconnect to who she truly was, much like how Tenzin did in the fog of lost souls by letting go of his illusion of who he was. As Tenzin told her, she isn't defined by what she is, but by who she is. That also means that even her physical limitations are not defined by being the avatar, especially during a time of spiritual alignment such as the Harmonic Convergence. Korra may have lost touch with her past lives, but in the present her essence was still the same. She was still a result of the previous 10,000 years of spiritual evolution that she went through while being the avatar. Her power came from who she was in the present, not from what she seemingly lost when Rava was gone.

Great reaction as always! Korra going in and out of the Avatar state shows her at the peak of her power… she has total control of the Avatar state and only uses it when she needs it. Bolin doesn’t truly love her, but he does remember the emotion from their early relationship. I think he taps into that to do his acting, and they’ve shown multiple times before that he had trouble distinguishing acting and real life (with his “dating” relationship with the actress, etc.). He’s sort of accidentally a very “method” actor. So he’s still feeling the emotions of his acting as it’s over. (He does love her in that moment, but not in the larger sense… he would’ve ultimately regretted getting back together with her.) Also, Aang and the other avatars aren’t gone, just Korra’s connection to them. That’s sad, but it’s good writing because it takes away a very OP power that was used a lot in AtLA as a deus ex machina… whenever needed, the avatar could “become” any previous avatar and use all of their knowledge and skills (and even give them full control). While it worked well in AtLA, in the long run it takes away a bit of the threat in any situation and takes away the avatar’s own agency as the one with the ability to control their own fate. This way, it requires the avatar to save themself in any situation. I’m sure there will still be eats to communicate with them if need be… we saw Tenzin communicate with Aang’s spirit in the same episode, so the avatar connection isn’t the only way to achieve that communication.

The reason for why Korra uses the Avatar State so sparingly is interesting. Since she can enter and leave the Avatar state far more easily, she basically uses it more tactically than Aang, to increase a particular move when needed instead of leaving it on all the time and risking the entire cycle needlesly, should she die. I personally thought this entire ending was a giant Deus Ex machine, one of many reasons this season didn't work for me. Korra, arguably one of the most powerful benders in the world, and now one of the few people we've ever heard of with some level of spirit bending powers, then meditates not around the tree but in the center of it and does so during the peak of harmonic convergence, and is channeling the cosmic energy of the universe through that tree through her body underneath the two merged spirit portals during the alignment of the entire solar system..... so yes, giant spirit Korra. Stay tuned for this being maybe possible again in another 10,000 years. | : ] '

Raava technically lost the battle between her and Vaatu every 10,000 years so the Avatar hit a reset. their spirits still exist but theyre disconnected from Raava. Korra is the start of a new 10,000 year cycle.

I interpreted that Korras spirt was stronger because it was her spirt. Ravva wasn't what made Korra or any avatar strong, she is just an aid for helping to hold the power of 4 elements.

Raava does empower Korra, but Korra's spirit has had 10,000 years as the avatar learning to become spiritually stronger and serving as the bridge, while Unalaq and Vaatu are new to being merged and don't know how to share their power. She's also using the power of Harmonic convergence and the tree of time.

I think she is going in and out of the avatar state because its risky, she can't die in the avatar state or the cycle will be broken so she is using it wisely, when she need the extra power in a moment. I think its a wise way to use such a power given the Risks

Idk if Korra's spirit was stronger than Unavaatu, per se. She got some hits in, but she didn't need to beat him in a fight, just find Raava. Jinora didn't have "what was left" of Rava. She just bailed Korra out of the spirit bending. Raava was just in Vaatu, light in darkness. Cool fight regardless. I like that Korra still had the gall to kaiju up and fight him. Season 3 has some crazy and brutal stuff in store. It's great.

I never considered the idea of Korra going into the spirit world to talk to other Avatars. I don't think that's possible (Tenzin's Aang was really just himself), but it does open up the other possibility (which I hadn't considered) of her accessing the memories of the Tree of Time. After all, we saw Wan in one of the vision "portals" inside the tree. It won't be an interactive experience on par with connecting with the Avatars, but she could still learn from watching them. Also, I've always wondered whether the fact that even during ATLA, we were actually only a hundred or so years out from Harmonic Convergence, if that actually contributed to the Fire Nation war. Darkness was growing as Harmonic Convergence approaches, and that darkness ever so slightly pushed the Fire Nation towards imperialism.

I think the reason why Korra's spirit was able to take on Vattu was because her spirit is still full of light even without Ravva and light is stronger than darkness

I know the whole point if Korra losing the connection with the other avatars is supposed to be this moment of character growth and the realization that she's not just the Avatar, but Korra herself, and I love that. However, I will say that if Raava had memories of Korra when she is born again, what stops her from remembering all the previous lives too? So, there you go, a wormhole that can justify the reappearance of the past avatars at some point. They are in Raavas memory just like Korra was. And besides, the past avatars are technically Korra's spirit too, so they are not Raava, they are all in Korea because they ARE Korra.

Season 2 isn't perfect, but I feel like it gets a LOT of unnecessary hate. There is so much in this season that not only strengthens what we've already known from ATLA, but it serves as the catalyst for all the proceeding events in the last 2 seasons. Part of the reason why things feel rushed or a tad bit sloppy is because the 1st season was only supposed to be a 12 episode mini-series. The 2nd season was greenlit immediately following the S1 premiere since it did so well in the ratings. So without being given a break, the team has to come up with a follow-up to their super contained Mini-series, rounding the story out to a standard 26-Episode series. Season 2 was fully written and being animated when Nickelodeon decided to Greenlight 2 more seasons of Korra. The team had to now write and plan 2 additional seasons while simultaneously working on S2's production. My feeling is I'm surprised Season 2 turned out as well as it did, despite all of Nickelodeon's medaling.
